gwolf Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I saw this come up on evilBay the other day and thought it was neat. Not everyone has seen these before. It's a Philco model P22 1/24 scale '66 Mustang Fastback AM Radio. I'm guessing a promo for either Philco dealers or more likely Ford dealers. I wonder who made the mold? I've never seen a 1/24 scale mustang from that year, usually they've been AMT's and 1/25. Anyway, neat stuff.
Greg Myers Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I've got a red one. Got it for Christmas maybe 1966.
Mark Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 It's not 1/24 scale, it's 1/25. Those were produced by AMT, and share most parts with promotional models (and kits). Most of the radio promos you see now are Thunderbirds, but there were others. I don't know about now, but when I was heavily into collecting promos the radios weren't as desirable as the regular promos.
ChrisBcritter Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 (edited) Tough part is finding one with a working radio; I've had two that did: a light blue '67 Mustang (sold it long ago) and an ivory '68 T-bird. Nice models and I don't mind that they're cheaper (but not by much) than regular promos. Edited June 25, 2014 by ChrisBcritter
Harry P. Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 Starting bid only $6.99? I would have thought they'd be a little more valuable than that, especially if the radio still works, like Chris said. Are they really that common?
Harry P. Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 A little birdie tells me that Philco was owned by Ford when those promos/radios were made...

tom Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 These are very cool, but did anyone else click on this topic expecting to see a detailed radio in 1/25 scale?

disabled modeler Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 Very cool too bad about the damage to the body. I have a 65 T-bird radio promo and others....I love restoring promos and collect them now always looking for more late 50s through the 70s body styles ones.
Rob Hall Posted June 27, 2014 Posted June 27, 2014 I have a couple of '68 ones--'68 Galaxie and '68 Mustang, both in bright yellow.

slusher Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 Is there much on am radio any more to listen to??? just curious..
gtx6970 Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 I can't speak for how rare if at all the others are . But when I found the Turbine car ( probablly 5 or 6 years ago ) . I had never seen one before . Since then I've seen several of them . And they don't seem to bring big money ,, I have less than $30 in mine. And I was pleasently suprised when it showed up and it worked. I think there are some AM music stations,,,,,but It's mostly talk radio and sports. It looks nice in my case next to my original Turbine car promo
disabled modeler Posted June 28, 2014 Posted June 28, 2014 There are a few pretty rare promos out there...me I just enjoy them and restoring them. The radio ones are cool but I like the regular ones better...radios rarely ever work in those anyway...still there promos and cool to me.
Motor City Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 I didn't know Jo-Han had any radio models. Was it also made by Philco? I remember seeing a mid-60s Thunderbird at the local hardware store. I believe the list price was $29.95, It might as well have been $299.95 since I didn't have the money either way! On a related topic, I think the remote-control promos were made by AMT from 1949 to 1958, and Jo-Han in 1956 and 1957.
Scalper Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Hmm I hade a stereo system made by Ford. guessing it was from the 70's had the typical turn table from that time. must be a connection there
disabled modeler Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I use to have one of those 50s remote control promos by AMT...it was a 53 Pontiac sedan...warped horribly. I checked my T-bird radio promos radio...works when I attach the loose wire it has...going to have to fix that part too I guess...LOL...
gwolf Posted July 1, 2014 Author Posted July 1, 2014 For those that have these promo car old radios, check the batteries. In the early 60's they made 9 volt batteries that were the same shape and size as today's AA batteries, which are only 1.5 volts. I made this mistake/discovery recently with an old pocket transistor radio.
