fractalign Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 Hey Guys. I have been trying to get both body sides done before moving onto there next stage of construction. But one thing I wanted to do was finish off the top of the hood, so that was filled in the centre and either side of the spine.
fractalign Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 (edited) Before I can get the passenger side body done I needed to get the driver's side door right. The gap was scribed in more deeply using a compass. With this door done down to the belt line, I can do the other door to exactly the same shape by taking a paper template of the this one and transferring it to the other side. fractalign Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 The belt line for the other side was cut in preparation and the contour extended out.
fractalign Posted September 3, 2014 Author Posted September 3, 2014 Here is how the contour looks in there cradle jig. There is still some filling to do on the lower half but that will be taken care of with the addition of the belt line. But before the belt line can be added, the door lines will need to be scribed in from the template from the other door. That will be the next task. Unfortunately that will not be until next week, I have to go away again, sorry guys. Once back the build will be back in full swing and you can expect some major contraction over the next few week including the roof and trunk.
fractalign Posted September 9, 2014 Author Posted September 9, 2014 Hey Guys. Just a quick update. I just got yesterday so am looking forward to getting back into the build. While away I picked up some .8 mm square tubing that will be used for the gutter rails. That will be the next task and all going well I will have photo's up in the next few days. Cheers,
Pim Posted September 9, 2014 Posted September 9, 2014 Hi Robert if you are going to cast this how much will it cost also will you be doing a stock version as well
kruleworld Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 I admire your persistence in scratchbuilding an entire car. I just woosed out and bought a resin trans-kit
fractalign Posted September 12, 2014 Author Posted September 12, 2014 Hey Guys. I have started back to work on the project. Sorry no photos because I have no internet at the moment. I am in the process of getting a new ISP and I will be back online in about a week or so. Sorry for the hold ups but my internet has been failing every six weeks or so lately. The new ISP will solve that problem, I hope. Anyway the build will continue as normal. I have started adding the lips to the wheel arches and I added the door to the other side. I am still documenting each step of the build so when I finally up load all the images at the end of next week, there should be plenty to look at. Cheers !
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) Hey Guys. I finally have internet back and a backlog of photos to put up so here goes. The uploads may have been delayed but the build has continued. The first thing I did when I got back was take a template of the door. Edited September 19, 2014 by fractalign
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 With that done I transferred it to the other side so that I could get the outline on this correct.
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 Here is how it looks after deepening the cuts.
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 The other thing I did was add the belt line.
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 The other thing I have been wanting to do is finish off the front wheel arches so I ended up creating the basic lip by using white putty.
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 The other thing I have been keen to create is the boot lid. This was a very easy task. The first thing I did after getting the measurements and cutting it to scale was to fold down the rear. I used an old vice to do this. The base of the vice was broken but the upper part still worked so I am glad I did not throw it out.
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) Once I had finished folding down the rear I needed to shape the leading edge. There is a slight contour on the leading edge so the boot that follows the flow of the windscreen. Edited September 19, 2014 by fractalign
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 As well as the contour the edge dips in slightly again this follows the convex shape of the rear window. This is the underside, like the hood I am yet to make the inner skin. This will be the hard part and at the moment I am more concerned with how the boot fits externally.
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) And here is how it looks in relation to the rest of the body. You will notice I have added the lip to the rear wheel arch as well as the front. I am more or less happy with the shape of both arches so I decided that it was time to reproduce these arches on the other side. Edited September 19, 2014 by fractalign
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 In order to to do this I needed to make a symmetry gauge. A symmetry gauge is basically just a template that allows for both sides to be the same. After tracing the shape onto 2mm thick styrene, I carefully cut it out and added a balsa wood frame to keep it rigid.
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 I double checked it against the body to make sure it was as tight as I could get it.
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 With the symmetry gauge completed, I moved onto the front. I have been wanting to make the nose cone for a while so the first thing I did was trace the basic shape.
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 In oder to finish the nose cone properly I need to re attach the other body side. With that done I used white putty to fill in any difference in the hood and nose cone height.
fractalign Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 Another thing I have started working on is getting extra detail around the doors now that I have worked out the gaps and outline. I carved out the opening for the handle and lock and deepened the bottom edge below the belt line.
