Sixties Sam Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 I built this 1969 Mustang Mach 1 back in 1969 (AMT kit, I think). When I got out of the hobby in the 1970's, I gave it to a local teenager who was a Mustang lover. Last week he returned it. It was his favorite model, and was one of my better builds back in the day. The paint was an actual Ford color (Dupli-Color, I think). I plan to refurbish it, but not a total rebuild. Disassembly, followed by a good cleaning (It's dusty!), then maybe redo the trim in BMF is all I want to do. The "kid", who is now in his 50's also gave back a 289 Cobra roadster, and an MPC 69 1/20th scale Corvette, which has literally fallen apart over the years. Lots of nostalgic projects for me!
Deathgoblin Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Overall, a really good build anyway. Sounds like a good call with the minor refurbish.
Mopar - D Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Sam great reunion I would just clean it up and then pick up a new kit and build it the same way but with your current modeling skills to show a then and now.
mikemopar70 Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 What a nice story!! I would like to see a long gone model being brought back to me!! Your Mustang looks very cool!
jeffs396 Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 That is so cool Sam! Found its way back after all these years, that doesn't happen often!
slusher Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Mustang looks awesome for its age. Love the story...
Bob Ellis Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Your story is great. I have a similar one. I built this MPC Pinto in 1974. It was in 3 homes I lived in after that. I sold it with a bunch of cars to a friend in Massachusetts in the '90s. Then that friend sold to a guy in Ohio. He sold it to a woman in Washington state. She sold it to a guy in Florida in 2011. He posted a photo of it and I asked him if he would trade or sell it back to me. We made a deal. Its back, but not as perfect as it left me. I used to use a soldering iron to attach glass and other parts when I didn't want glue to ruin it. You can see the glass has heated areas along the edges. Plus, the paint is a blue over a red metallic which I remember. 40 years of travel and now it's back.
Sixties Sam Posted July 16, 2014 Author Posted July 16, 2014 Wow, Bob. Your PInto really got around! It's amazing that you found it after all those sales and moves! My Mach 1 was only a few houses down from where I live. Sam
Bob Ellis Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 Sam, How do you like the tire melting the plastic on the Pinto wheels? It also spent 15 years in two very hot attics. I never knew what tire melt was until the '90s. A lot of them got damaged.
Sixties Sam Posted July 17, 2014 Author Posted July 17, 2014 Bob, I noticed the tires were missing in your photo, but I figured you just took them off. I've never seen any just melt like that! I never had my old models in hot attics, so the tires stayed good. I do have a Tony Nancy dragster from about 1964 where the wheel rims seem to have started melting. There must have been some kind of chemical reaction or something where the rims meet the tires. The rims are distorted and have blobs of plastic all over them. Weird! Sam
