Ace-Garageguy Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Cars are meant to be drivin' and that's where the fun is, driving and enjoying a collector car and checkin' out other rides at a car show or cruise night. They ain't NO fun sittin' in the garage. Some of us derive immense satisfaction from building and modifying our own stuff. Even if it takes forever. Different strokes, ya' know? Good frienda mine spent 5 years building a world-class chopped '36 Ford, only to sell it shortly after completion. He's just happier building them than driving them, and doesn't give a rat's backside about going to shows. Hope that's OK with you.
High octane Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 When I was much younger I used to yank out engines and transmissions, rebuild and modify carburetors, install headers, mufflers, etc. Since I've been there and done that and I'm quite a bit older now, I've had enough of that and have a mechanic I can trust. I do change the oil on my ride so that I can "bond" with the car. LOL!

My neck doesn't like it when I look "up", so I don't work under cars anymore. I take my cars to a cool shop that specializes in air cooled VWs and the proprietor is a Harley guy with a ZZ Top beard. He's honest and knows I could do the work myself so he talks to me like I know something. He knows when I bring in a car and tell him what is wrong, I'm usually right. My body is screaming after a full day of yard work and a hot shower, so I'm going to watch what I take on! In my day I have done my own work on cars, built a few and even did that "take it apart and get distracted" bit. I would like to have a 1930s roadster pickup. And when the right combination of vehicle and available funds appear at the same time, I will own one. Only this time around I will buy a finished truck to enjoy. I don't have a few years to spend in the garage anymore. Edited May 17, 2015 by Tom Geiger

I don't have a few years to spend in the garage anymore. Wow. I got almost ten years on you, still build hot-rods 8 to 5 in an un-air-conditioned (and rarely heated) shop for a part of my living, sweat profusely in the process, drive too fast, and seem to think I'm going to live forever. I mow my own lawn (just got a push mower...no gas...to make it more of a workout), plus ALL the repairs and modifications during the ongoing renovation of my house. Then for fun when I have some daylight and the weather's nice, I work on my own automotive projects at home...and I have a machine shop in-house. Recently got a mountain bike too...hate the old-man-chicken-legs-in-Bermuda-shorts look, you know? Use it or lose it. If I die doing what I love, that's fine by me. What I don't want to do is live to be a slow old fart. Have to admit that aspirin has become my good and faithful buddy, and that it takes a little longer to get going in the mornings, but hey, life is good even when it sucks. I do change the oil on my ride so that I can "bond" with the car. LOL! Love it. Edited May 17, 2015 by Ace-Garageguy
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 Just happened to find this on my FB wall! Love the Bug, Miles. Last time I used a VW engine even close to that hard (slalom car) I spun a main bearing (oil starvation, no deep sump, not enough pump). Do you know anything about the car and engine in the video? I'd like to know what he's running internally.
Roadrunner Posted May 17, 2015 Posted May 17, 2015 The discovery today, of just how well Polly S paint stripper works, pleases me very, very much.

Not your regular Bug engine! As for my VW, here it is now... or close to now. This was in-progress of moving it; it's since been jacked all the way up and the holes it was in have been filled. The old Meteor bias-ply tires hold air miraculously well, but definitely need replacing. The fenders had just been hanging on the sides for to protect the computer from the weather, so we moved them before we move the car. It'll come out into "the way" (open area of the yard) and get cleaned out as best as it can be right now and then checklisted, along with a fluid drain. Edited May 18, 2015 by chunkypeanutbutter
High octane Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Grilling steaks, baked potatoes, and veggies for dinner pleased me. I shoulda grilled a few shrimp also.
Tom Geiger Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 (edited) I tried something new tonight. I had discovered that there was a stamp club in NJ near my work, so I made plans to attend a meeting tonight. I hadn't been to a stamp club since the 1980s. My observation? More gray hair than at a model club meeting! Some of these guys were seriously old. I was probably the youngest person there. Part of my mission is to learn more about postal history from 1903-8 so I guess I need old guys! They had a formal PowerPoint presentation by a guy named Milton who had a collection of postmarks from the 1800s to date from towns named Milton. He was a good speaker who made it fun. They did go out of their way to welcome me and invited me back. It wasn't far out of my way so I may just do that. Edited May 20, 2015 by Tom Geiger

Tom Geiger Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 "Hi. My name is Tom, and I'm a philatelist". and an openly practicing one at that! Bill, you would get into the period of postal history I collect since it was the beginning of automation, as the first motorized trucks overtook horse carts, as companies raced to build stamp canceling equipment, vending equipment and stamp affixing machinery..
Joe Handley Posted May 21, 2015 Posted May 21, 2015 Got my Vaterra Ascender K5 Blazer built from a box of parts to a point that it looks like a truck as of this morning. Seen somebody complain about how bad the instructions for this kit were on R/C Crawler, but considering I did all but the wheel and tire assembly and install at night between 10pm and 3am over about a 5 day period with minimal problems, I'm guessing there were more issues with that builder than the kit.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 After a non-stressful school day, I went to work for the first day. Smooth sailing, good work, not to mention I made money!
High octane Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Glad to hear it MIles, but remember that not ALL days will be "smooth sailing."
cobraman Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Found I had a bad rear tire. Took the truck to Firestone for two tires and a wheel alignment. Everything on sale ! Only 315.00 out the door. Not bad. I am happy.
High octane Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Drove my ride to an "Open House" event at D&M Corvette today and saw some really cool cars that were on display the,re as well as the ones built by D&M which of course included the '62 'Vette that's available at your local hobby shop as well. I'm gonna hang out at the local Dog 'N Suds tonight.
Joe Handley Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 (edited) Feeling better after my irked post Friday night, although I did lose 3 hours or my 6 hour shift yesterday. Think I slept as much if not more between friday night and this morning that I did for the rest of the week combined! Edited May 25, 2015 by Joe Handley
Tom Geiger Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 Got my new grill today. Would have to be an adventure of course! But all ends well. I let the wife choose what I cooked, so we had boneless chicken breasts that I put a nice rub on. I made a cold pasta salad.... Tri-Macaroni (that's three different shapes!), in an Italian dressing with black olive slices, pinto beans, little corn ears and artichoke hearts! Yum! Tomorrow will bring the ribs and wings I bought today!
cobraman Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 All right ! Party at Tom's house tomorrow at 2 ! : ) I am BBQing ribs tomorrow also. 63 and never grilled ribs. Got some instructions on line. I hope they come out good.
James2 Posted May 25, 2015 Author Posted May 25, 2015 I am forever grateful to the men and women who sacrificed so much to create the greatest country in the world. It is how ever unfortunate many have forgotten that heritage...
Ace-Garageguy Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 I held my temper, instead of making a total fool of myself.
