slusher Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 (edited) And speaking of unexpected, Keith Urban. Yeah, he's a "country singer," but he can play! He and John Mayer get into it pretty good in the second half of this song... Your right Harry Keith Urban is pretty good. Edited August 19, 2014 by slusher
Petetrucker07 Posted August 19, 2014 Posted August 19, 2014 Another unsuspected guitarist is Brad Paisley

935k3 Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 I did not start this thread to say anybody was the best or this was the best performance. I just wanted to share what I thought was a great singular performance.
Metalmad Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Glen Tipton & KK Downing ( Judas Priest ) Wolf Hoffmann ( Accept )
Thatswhatshesaid Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Your right Harry Keith Urban is pretty good. YouTube him playing 'Devil went down to Georgia' on guitar.
Danny Lectro Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 (edited) I usually don't pay much attention to the guitarist in a band, as I gravitate more towards songs than pyrotechnics. However, I am a big fan of Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Street Sweeper Social Club, the Nightwatchman). He's someone who spent a lot of time learning scales, perfecting technique and shredding, until he realized how much all of that was limiting him and keeping him from finding his own voice on the instrument. He found other ways to play his instruments, and carved out a nice little niche for himself, with people everywhere trying to figure out, "How did he do that?" Here he is playing "The Ghost of Tom Joad" with Bruce Springsteen: And here is just the solo from a song called "Promenade" by Street Sweeper Social Club: Edited August 21, 2014 by Danny Lectro

Danny Lectro Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 You can't post videos with "NSFW" lyrics here. There, is that better?
Harry P. Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 There, is that better? You should know better.
Harry P. Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 ok, now that Ghost of Tom Joad video is cool. Music doesn't need profanity. Just my opinion.
Danny Lectro Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) You should know better. I apologize. When I posted, I was sure I remembered seeing vids with four-letter-words posted here and left up. Perhaps I was mistaken, or perhaps they had slipped under the radar. Glad you liked the Springsteen vid. Mr. Morello is one of my musical influences. I know I'll never be able to devote the kind of time to studying music to get to his level, but he inspired me to look at my instruments differently. Edited August 22, 2014 by Danny Lectro
Harry P. Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 If any videos with four letter words got by me, that's on me. If I see them, I delete them. But I can't possibly see every post, so I don't doubt that you saw some that I didn't get to.
Harry P. Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Glad you liked the Springsteen vid. Mr. Morello is one of my musical influences. I don't know anything about Tom Morello, but Springsteen is on my top 10 all-time favorites list. Closer to 1 than 10.
Danny Lectro Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I don't know anything about Tom Morello, but Springsteen is on my top 10 all-time favorites list. Closer to 1 than 10. For a long time, I never really thought of Springsteen as a guitarist, as most of his work I had heard was focused on his vocals. Then quite a few years ago I saw a televised performance, I think from a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where he was playing Roy Orbison songs with Roy and a few other famous guitar players. I was surprised to hear him rip out some really soulful riffs. It wasn't flashy, but if just fit. I was enthralled, and I usually hate watching guitar players trading riffs.
Harry P. Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Yeah, most people who hear "Bruce Springsteen" think singer/songwriter, not guitarist. He's not bad. Not flashy, just sort of "meat and potatoes" stuff. He leaves the fancy stuff to Van Zandt and Lofgren.
Superpeterbilt Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 Springsteen sort of punches the notes out of the guitar. Very unique technique. Anyway, heres my top 20 Jimi Hendrix Alvin Lee Kim Thayil Rory Gallagher Tony Iommi Fast Eddie Clark Robin Trower Nokie Edwards Leslie West
Harry P. Posted August 22, 2014 Posted August 22, 2014 I forgot about Robin Trower. Good addition to the list.
Superpeterbilt Posted August 23, 2014 Posted August 23, 2014 Now your diggin deep Terry. Thats my guys man. They are my biggest guitar influences.A lot of the more popular guys just dont do it for me.
