Bob Dylan can sing.

Ever heard "Lay Lady Lay?"

never all the way, usually change the channel before he really gets going.

I saw Dylan on the Bangor Waterfront in '12. He sounds much better now, growly voice.

hmmmm, I thought he sang thru his nose?

disclaimer;

I am not looking to make any enemies with the past comments, just in one of those moods today. although all of the aforementioned band/artists, I really do not listen to........ at all.

I like how you're desperately trying to save your own hide now

No, I understand. To each his own. I personally loathe Robert Plant, and I'm pretty sure everyone with a little good taste hates the Arctic Monkeys.

More music, now!

Neil Diamond, America or Coming to America or something like that. One of a very few songs of his I like.

I've never met anyone before who doesn't like at least some Tom Petty songs. AFAIC, anyone who doesn't like Tom Petty just ain't hooked up right.

If you don't like Tom, how about someone else doing one of his songs?

Okay, here's my ten favorite TP songs, right off the top of my head.

I Won't Back Down

Love Is a Long Road

Zombie Zoo

Last Dance with Mary Jane

Swingin'

The Last DJ

Scare Easy

You Wreck Me

Southern Accent

One Story Town

I Will Run to You (with Stevie Nicks)

Just since you got 11, my list goes to eleven too. B)

I'd add "Swingin" to my list too.

if Tom Petty would ever learn to sing, play the guitar and harmonica, he wouldn't be half bad. how he even got a record deal is beyond me, just my opinion.

Agreed that his voice, like Dylan, is an "acquired taste."

As far as guitar... that's what he has Mike Campbell for!

And as far as harmonica... sounds ok to me! :D

Back to Tom Petty...

Yes, technically he has a lousy singing voice. It's nasal and whiny and sort of annoying (which is odd, because his speaking voice is very different). If you can't get past the voice, then I can see how you will never like any of his music. But if you can get past his voice, and are able to enjoy the songs, then you're in for a treat because he has written a ton of great songs. And the Heartbreakers are a great band that can really play. B)

Rock is full of "acquired taste" voices--Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, Randy Newman, Warren Zevon, and there are prolly dozens more.

Have they ever done a Tom Petty tribute album?

Tinman by America is correct....

Now for another easy one...

Well, your friends with their fancy persuasions
Don't admit that it's part of a scheme,
But I can't help but have my suspicions
'Cause I ain't quite as dumb as I seem.

And you said you were never intendin'
To break up our scene in this way,
But there ain't any use in pretendin',
It could happen to us any day.

None that I know of...

But if it were done with todays artists... it would probably be something along the lines of maroon 5 or One Direction.... How sad....

I think some of today's country artists could do justice to TP, like Luke Bryant, Florida Georgia Line, Brad Paisley, Montgomery Gentry (they did a decent cover of Bon Jovi), etc. Blake Shelton's done Won't Back Down, as I posted a link to earlier.

I don't think this one has been posted yet:

Got a surprise from my honey
Got a message from my girl
When she picked up a pen from beside her bed
And wrote me a scribbled note
Said, she'd be coming back to see me
That she would be visiting real soon
Gonna get up from her long white bed
And leave this cold white room

He was talking about Bob Dylan.

As a sidenote, I like Randy Newman. I've got at least four of his albums on vinyl.... I think everybody should listen to the whole of Little Criminals once over.
