Slumpbuster build: Dodge Sidewinder Custom/Kitbash (New pics 9-18)

Hey guys! Usually I would have done a WIP build thread....but lately when I have done that, I end up dragging it out too long so I decided to build first and get the build to the point of paint and THEN put some pics up..........so here is the latest build.

Wanted to build a custom version of the rarely built Dodge Sidewinder. I picked this kit up at one of the last local meetings for cheap so I decided to use it as a slump buster build.........almost a big mistake! Anyone who has built this truck can tell you the body is VERY fiddly to get right......in fact, I have been mocking this up for the past week to get all the jambs to fit tightly. She is finally ready for paint!! WOO HOO! (I am thinking it will be a Indigo blue with bright pearl blue highlights.......should look good with the Hypersilver wheels!)

The mods so far have been small (for me): The wheels/tires/brakes are from the diecast world. The wheels and tires came from a Maisto All Stars Camaro and the brakes are from a FD3S RX7 Jada diecast (both were broken and from a Goodwill). I had to narrow the rear track 5/8" and the front track 1/2" to fit the massive rollers! The front bumper was modified using the lower airdam from a Viper GTS. The mufflers are from the Saleen Speedster. The rear radius rods and coilovers were made by me from aluminum tubing and "anodized" with Sharpies. Still on the "to-do" list is the plug wires, throttle linkages and cables, painting the fuel cell and running fuel lines and brake lines, installing the rear coilovers, and then on to the black and red interior.

Any comments are welcome! Enjoy the pics!!!

Nice start. Know what you mean about how sometimes a simple project can be more work than you expect. I have one of those going right now. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Bob.......it feels like it has been so long since I put something worthwhile up here! Good luck with your project.

Well Gollie look at that

Looks better as a whole huh? :D;)

That would be how a I think a wip could be. Build it first to completion or almost there, then post the complete wip.

An alternative would be to block comments during the build. If anyone had comments, suggestions etc that could be handled by PM's

Nice subject Kenny, I didn't even know they made a kit of that concept, which I always liked, along with the Copperhead roadster ...looking forward to seeing more, looks great!

Thanks Jeremy! I didn't know they had a kit of this either until I saw it at a show/swap last year for a ridiculous price.......fast forward to last month's AMG meeting where I found it in a member's pile unopened for sale for a steal of a deal! I had to have it!!

Hey I'm back again......since last time I have completed ALL the bodywork ( ) and painted it. I decided on a color similar to Viper GTS blue (but I added a SMALL touch of purple Kandy into the mix......the pictures just dont catch it though. It is outside on this beautiful day airing out and letting the paint fume out.

Here are a couple of pics that are ok but they just dont capture the true pearl color. Oh well, here you go.

Thank you Bob, Dan, and Jeff!

Forgot to say earlier......the color was achieved by spraying the body 1st: HOK Goldmine Pearl, then 2nd misted with HOK Black Pearl, 3rd coated with HOK Kandy Grape, 4th (!) then lightly sprayed the body with HOK True Blue Pearl and FINALLY!!! 4 coats of decanted Rustoleum Lacquer clearcoat. WHAT A DAY!!

Thanks guys!

I promise pics of an update will be soon........

The wife tore into me this weekend after painting HOK sooooooo,

I have been working on my new spray booth in the basement, I just have to get the vent figured out and then it is back to paint again!! Powervent from an old hot water heater that I attached to a new/old 32"Wx24"Hx24"D fiberglass ceramics painting booth. (Got it FREE from my neighbor down the way!)
