DonW Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I'm half English half Scottish - where does this leave me?
Rob Hall Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Historic event. It's fascinating to put the size in perspective. Scotland has a smaller population than Arizona and about 1/4 the land area.
Rob Hall Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I'm half English half Scottish - where does this leave me? Good question. My ancestry includes Scots, English and Welsh. Been there once, beautiful country...want to see more of it.
10thumbs Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 I'll certainly be watching this. I can't really say that separating is a good idea though. This may stress both economies beyond a reasonable amount. But the idea is admirable. Michael
Lunajammer Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 Amazing that something as significant as that can be done with a simple vote. Historically aren't these things done with bloody revolutions?
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) And they're letting 16 YEAR OLDS vote on the referendum !!! Their feedback so far has been that if you give younger people access to the political system, they become informed and engaged. Interesting notion. Edited September 18, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy
10thumbs Posted September 18, 2014 Posted September 18, 2014 The prime time film last night was "Braveheart". I watched it again! Good idea getting kids out to vote! Here in Germany, national and local elections get only around a 50-60% turnout. Michael
Greg Myers Posted September 18, 2014 Author Posted September 18, 2014 Wasn't what the Viet Nam war was about? And they're letting 16 YEAR OLDS vote on the referendum !!! "Old enough to kill, but not fer votin" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_TtUb7z1pQ * * A commentary on music, not politics.
Greg Myers Posted September 18, 2014 Author Posted September 18, 2014 well, the votin' part anyway. and it is a nice version.
Greg Myers Posted September 19, 2014 Author Posted September 19, 2014 Glasgow, Scotland (CNN) -- Scotland will remain part of the United Kingdom -- along with England, Wales and Northern Ireland -- following a historic referendum vote. By 55% to 45%, a majority of voters rejected the possibility of Scotland breaking away and becoming an independent nation.
Ace-Garageguy Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Bugger. But not surprising, as the "no" vote was heavily marketed as security-over-independence. And isn't that what most people prefer, in the final analysis?
DonW Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 Good news for Scotland, the UK and for me personally. But it's all a bit of a farce since we live in a world of multinationals!

But it's all a bit of a farce since we live in a world of multinationals! I'm sure it is for the best for everyone concerned, in reality, but I had a romanticized notion of Scotland as an independent nation at long last. Of course, being American, it's none of my damm business anyway. Edited September 19, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy

PowerPlant Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) Mel Gibson died in vain, it would seem On a more serious note, I don't think a different result would have caused serious unrest as some posts above insinuate, but it certainly would have shaken things up in terms of other separatist tendencies across Europe, most prominently on the Iberian peninsula, where Basque Country and Catalonia have firm foundations for claims to independence from Spain, not to mention the volatile situation in Russia and the Ukraine... However, to get an idea just to what extent this goes, check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_active_separatist_movements_in_Europe Edited September 19, 2014 by PowerPlant
crazyjim Posted September 19, 2014 Posted September 19, 2014 I thought William Wallace got the push for Scotland independence and a few years after his demise, the Scots won their freedom.
Harry P. Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Historic event. It's fascinating to put the size in perspective. Scotland has a smaller population than Arizona and about 1/4 the land area. There are a lot of independent countries even smaller. Tonga. Andorra. Luxembourg. Monaco. Liechtenstein. Vatican City. Cyprus. Nauru. Malta. San Marino. And a lot more.
Rob Hall Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 There are a lot of independent countries even smaller. Tonga. Andorra. Luxembourg. Monaco. Liechtenstein. Vatican City. Cyprus. Nauru. Malta. San Marino. And a lot more. Yes, I know... I was only talking about Scotland.
Harry P. Posted September 20, 2014 Posted September 20, 2014 Me too. Independent countries smaller than Scotland.
