JollySipper Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 (edited) I've been really getting into these guys lately..... Anyone here like them? Queens of the Stone Age.... Edited September 18, 2020 by JollySipper
iamsuperdan Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 It's funny. I'm not a big fan of QOTSA, but I'm a huge fan of Josh Homme's previous band; Kyuss.
JollySipper Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 Kyuss is okay! QOTSA has more of an "artsy" feel to it tho....... I really liked 'Them Crooked Vultures', which was Homme, Grohl, and John Paul Jones from Zeppelin.....
JollySipper Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 I've been listening to Kyuss for the past couple days straight, really good band! It's my understanding that Homme's guitar is put through a bass amp..... Would that give it more "fuzz"? I'd post a link to the song I've been listening to (the 8.5 minute jam "Fatso Forgotso"), but there's an ef bomb in it, so I'll leave it off of here.... There's another long song called "Un Sandpiper" that's really good, also......

A bass amp is designed to emphasize the low end frequencies, so although it won't give it more fuzz, it will change the tone. I think I read somewhere that he used a Marshall guitar amp, but plugged it into bass cabinets, which would definitely give a little more low end thump. It also sounds like he plays everything on the neck pickup, again changing tone slightly. It does kind of sound like he uses a Big Muff or some other fuzz pedal, but I suspect his tone is more a combination of his guitar and amp settings, not any kind of effect. I listen to Kyuss quite a bit. If you're into podcasts, check this one out. Alan Cross is a hugely respected rock journalist here in Canada. He has his one show, The Ongoing History of New Music. He did a two-parter on Josh, QOTSA, and the history. It's good, as are all of his shows. afx Posted September 24, 2020 Author Posted September 24, 2020 Band of Joy was Plant's band before Led Zeppelin. John Bonham was also a member. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Band_of_Joy
metalhead Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Not exactly obscure, but not really mainstream, either. These guys are incredible. I recently found this song and honestly, I haven't stopped listening to it for almost two days.
iamsuperdan Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Apocalyptica are really, really good. For those who are unaware, they got their start by being a Metallica cover band. Metallica on strings. And they have since morphed into a rather excellent "real" band.
iamsuperdan Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 I've been into a lot of mellower, instrumental music lately. Leech are my newest discovery. I don't know what "post rock" is supposed to be, in terms of genre, but that's apparently what this is. And I really dig it.

iamsuperdan Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 LOVE John Hiatt! Discovered him in the mid-90s, saw him on Austin CIty Limits. Definitely not what I was listening to at the time, but I loved it. Have been a fan ever since. In fact, I think this is the performance that hooked me.

Snake45 Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 John Hiatt did a few songs I REALLY like. Couple I can think of right offhand are "Some Fun Now" and "Pirate Radio."
doorsovdoon Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 These guys are good. Not a well known band but good tunes with lyrics to match.
