Randy D Posted January 23, 2015 Posted January 23, 2015 Hi Joe, Really like all the super detailing you are putting in this build !!!! Randy
mustang1989 Posted January 23, 2015 Author Posted January 23, 2015 Thanks Dan and Randy! You know I was toolin' around on my email and got an advertisement for a 1:8 scale Lamborghini Countach LP 500. This isn't related to my build but I just had to comment on this. There aint no way I've got this kind of money laying around!!!! Check it out.
mustang1989 Posted January 24, 2015 Author Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) Dan: I thought it was cool too but 1400 bucks??? That's a lot of friggin' money!! Ok it's update time. I spent alot time this morning on the chassis detailing and painting the brake and fuel lines, removing all the seam lines and flash from the differential and the front suspension (this was enough to drive a sane man crazy) and test fitting all the parts. I also broke out my spare kit that's molded in white and the spare tire set that I have for my 66 Mustang and put every thing together in a mock up to see if I could get the stance and the tire / fenderwell clearances I needed....particularly at the rear of the car. I had to mess with the spacing of the wheel backing a little but I got everything together and the mock up/ test fit yielded promising results. Here's how the stance will look: Edited January 24, 2015 by mustang1989
FASTBACK340 Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 Challenger is coming along real nice Joe. But I noticed something funny: Your screen name refers to FORD Your signature refers to GM And your building a MOPAR Love it !
mustang1989 Posted January 24, 2015 Author Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) American auto fan all the way!!! And thanks for the good word John!! Edited January 24, 2015 by mustang1989
Custom Mike Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 (edited) Joe, I'm glad I'm not the only one crazy enough to do the retainer for the brake reservoir.... Edited February 1, 2015 by Custom Mike
FASTBACK340 Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Joe, I'm glad I'm not the only one crazy enough to do the retainer for the brake booster.... Nice job under the hood Albert!
mustang1989 Posted January 25, 2015 Author Posted January 25, 2015 (edited) Man that is an impressive job under the hood of that thing! Looks good Albert!! While not much in the overall progress of this build, I did manage to start painting the suspension and differential today. Still gotta bring out the detail for the rear springs, paint some of the front suspension areas and paint the driveshaft but we're getting closer all the time.............. Belugawrx Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 That is some very fine painting of the brake / fuel lines Joe ! Coming along nicely Cheers
Mopar - D Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Joe it still is coming along little by little and looking fantastic
mustang1989 Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 Bruce: Thanks man! I think it took me around 30-45 minutes to get the brake lines and fuel lines painted. In short............I'm glad that parts over! I was a nervous wreck during the whole painting process!!! Dan: Thanks for the support bud! The way this build is progressing (or slowly progressing in this case) every little bit counts!
mustang1989 Posted January 26, 2015 Author Posted January 26, 2015 Thanks Carl! I didn't do just a whole lot to this thing this morning. I got the transmission crossmember and some other front suspension components painted black and got the driveshaft painted and glossed. Will wait a day or so before posting any more updates as there hasn't been enough done to post anything. Hopefully I'll have the chassis on wheels by Thursday anyhow.
mustang1989 Posted January 27, 2015 Author Posted January 27, 2015 (edited) One of the things that I find most surprising about the chassis of this kit is that despite the accuracy of detail spent on the basic chassis piece ( fuel and brake lines, contours and shape of the fuel cell and other details that I haven't seen on a lot of other kits) is that Monogram totally dropped the ball on the rear suspension/ axle area. Where's the shocks? I had to go to my donor newer Revell Challenger kit for those and they where way too long. This is how long they are.... So I went to work again. We start here: and cut it at the shock sleeve area like so: I cut a little over an 1/8" off of it and drilled into the two halves Then took a pin that I had laying around and glued one end into the lower part of the shock and cut the other half of the pin off to leave about 1/8" protruding out of the lower half and slid the top half of the shock onto the pin and glued 'er in place... I think I can live with the length now. A little more clean up tomorrow on the shocks and some top side mount plates and it's off to the painting process..... Edited January 27, 2015 by mustang1989

If I remember correctly, the placement of those brake and fuel lines was another goof on Monogram's part. I think it's a mirror image of the real car and while the fix might not be difficult, it would be time consuming. I left it alone on my two previous builds but I will be correcting it on my next. Anyway, you're doing a nice job on this rebuild. I'll be following. Edited January 27, 2015 by johnbuzzed

I think it's a mirror image of the real car. Now that's funny! LOL!! I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it. It makes sense though. Why would the fuel lines be run on the opposite side of the engine where the fuel pump is??
1972coronet Posted January 27, 2015 Posted January 27, 2015 Your JS23J0B is coming along nicely , Joe ! Beautiful work and craftsmanship ! While I adore the early 1980's Monogram Muscle Car series , their short-comings are numerous ( ) . The lack of shocks is one of the most glaring omissions ; then there's the incorrect air cleaners ( LS-6 Chevelle and 1971 "Satellite" ) ; the 3 blobs which "pass" for the trio of Holley 2300's ; and , my favourite example : the 1971 HemiCuda : - 8 3/4 rear behind a Hemi / 4-speed ?!? - No oil pump nor oil filtre - Aftermarket radio - Zero door panel detail - No shocks ! - Moulded-on and subsized exhaust But, back to your splendid 1970 T/A ... Your attention to detail is exemplery ! Keep up the great work !
mustang1989 Posted January 28, 2015 Author Posted January 28, 2015 Thanks John and youre right. It seems like the 80's Monogram car kits are a bit lacking in detail. The aircraft are the same way but I really like the exterior rivet detail on those. The aircraft kits make for very upgradeable kits because of the rivet detail feature though. 'Preciate it Dan!! I've been called alot of things but not an overachiever! LOL!!! Thanks Tim!!
slusher Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Like how you fixed them shocks Joe. Real nice touch...
mustang1989 Posted January 28, 2015 Author Posted January 28, 2015 Thanks Carl! I painted the shocks this morning and glossed 'em. I also glued the differential/ spring assy to the chassis. No pics today but might have some tomorrow. Will definitely have it on wheels by Friday it looks like. I would've had it done by tomorrow but my truck crapped out on me last night on the way home. Lots of fuel and no fire makes the 'ol truck behave funny.....and it didn't make me very happy to get stuck either!! Ah well, I was at least able to get it towed to the house an hour later to be able to fix it in my driveway anyways.
Mopar - D Posted January 28, 2015 Posted January 28, 2015 Joe I wil be looking for your pictures tomorrow sorry to here about the truck breaking down.
