afx Posted December 21, 2014 Author Posted December 21, 2014 That's one badass Escort Shay and dude can drive! Wish I could find a set of those killer 13" Minilites for this build.
dublin boy Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I sold him a Fiesta many years ago, he was quite young back then. Nice chap, you wouldn't think he'd drive like a lunatic, he never lifts no matter how sideways he gets! With your talent JC, I'm sure you could widen the kit Minilites?
afx Posted December 21, 2014 Author Posted December 21, 2014 (edited) Thanks Shay. If width where the only issues I could fix them but they are the wrong style and diameter. The kit wheels scale out to 16". They need to look like this. Unfortunately they look like this. Edited December 21, 2014 by afx
afx Posted December 21, 2014 Author Posted December 21, 2014 My fall back plan if I can't find a set of tarmac wheels/tires I am happy with is to model it with gravel tires. These are resin copies of the set that comes in Hasegawa's Nissan Bluebird Safari kit.
Randy D Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Hi JC, It is always a treat to follow one of your builds !! Excellent work on the roll cage and chassis. Randy
afx Posted December 24, 2014 Author Posted December 24, 2014 (edited) Thanks Randy & Robert Here are the fabricated and installed Panhard bar brackets both on the chassis and the axle. Edited January 5, 2015 by afx
afx Posted December 26, 2014 Author Posted December 26, 2014 (edited) Boreham installed dual calipers on the rear. One for the hand brake and one for the foot (pedal) brake. The driver would use the hand brake to put the car into a slide entering a turn then control the slide with the throttle. This allowed him to maintain speed and RPM through the corner. The kit does not provide for this detail so I cut a set of calipers from a glue bomb of this kit I purchased. Edited January 5, 2015 by afx
cruz Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 Following closely bro, love where you're going with this. Don't forget to keep bringing it to the meeting!
afx Posted December 27, 2014 Author Posted December 27, 2014 Following closely bro, love where you're going with this. Don't forget to keep bringing it to the meeting! Thanks Marcos, will do.
508boricua Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Awesome! Interesting suspension on those, leaf springs and four link... cool. Kutgw.
afx Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 Thanks Delfin. It is actually a 5-link suspension setup with the 5th link being the Panhad bar.
afx Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 (edited) Current state of the rear axle. It may be hard to believe but I have already added over 30 individual pieces to the rear axle alone. The completed rear suspension will be over 60 pieces. Edited December 30, 2014 by afx
afx Posted December 31, 2014 Author Posted December 31, 2014 man that's cool keep it going man Thanks Brayden. Lots left to do but I think I am on the home stretch with the rear suspension.
afx Posted January 2, 2015 Author Posted January 2, 2015 (edited) The kit rear spoiler is too upright it should be nearly flat. After sanding it down I fabricated and installed a new spoiler.. Also fabricated and installed tail light housings. Edited January 5, 2015 by afx
Randy D Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 Hi JC, Enjoying my education on building this car !!!! Randy
afx Posted January 5, 2015 Author Posted January 5, 2015 (edited) Thanks Randy & Brizio. The RS1800 or MkII if you prefer was homologated at 1785lbs but no works car ever obtained this weight. Even the lightweight tarmac cars weighed in at 2000 lbs and the heavyweight cars used on the rough-road events like the Safari or Acropolis, tipped the scales at 2300 lbs. Rally cars are subjected to all manners of abuse from rocks, tree stumps, fence post, the occasional wandering livestock or large woodland creature and require a significant amount of reinforcing. An example of this reinforcing and consequently added weight comes from what the Boreham Rally Preparation Manual refers to as a Diff-Guard. Edited January 5, 2015 by afx
Randy D Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Hi JC. , That should help save the axle Superb work as usual !! Randy
