Mopar - D Posted December 27, 2014 Author Posted December 27, 2014 Spent time today designing and building the car support for the car once the cab. The ramps are not in there final location still missing the rear beam to hold them in place. The frame will move up to allow for the cab to tilt.
Mopar - D Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 Worked on the upper ramps and did a load test. (Passed) Now to get the 3rd car support designed and built.
Mopar - D Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 Here's a shot with the cab tilted.
martinfan5 Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Just curious, what cars are you putting on the trailer?
Mopar - D Posted December 29, 2014 Author Posted December 29, 2014 Jonathan here's what I have for my load of 68 Mopars.
martinfan5 Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 I am not sure if you will get them all to fit, and I only say that is I have the trailer built and spent some time seeing what all would fit.
Mopar - D Posted December 29, 2014 Author Posted December 29, 2014 Jonathan I'm trying for 9 cars but my cars are big cars so I'm not sure but it's going to be close. I've already made some cuts to the trailer and plan on adding some on the back of it. Here's the cab with 3 cars loaded on it. This is the main frame work I'm looking into adding some hydraulic cylinders and maybe some more bracing.
Mopar - D Posted December 29, 2014 Author Posted December 29, 2014 More work on getting the frame and engine all glued together and the wheels in place. Going to start back on the trailer work now.
Superpeterbilt Posted December 29, 2014 Posted December 29, 2014 Great work, and very cool project. That Dodge cab looks perfect on the FL chassis. And what better load than my favorite year of my favorite car. Ive thought about building a car hauler full of wrecked General Lees off to the junkyard, but Ive never been able to decide on a tractor. I have a few of these Dodge cabs, but they are sleeper cabs. Anyway, enough rambling. Great job!
Mopar - D Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Started back on the trailer with opening up the clearance between the wheels. I was able to trim 2 scale inches off each side of the wheel fenders that is enought to get a Charger through. Very tight squeeze with a steady hand to get through.
martinfan5 Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Jonathan I'm trying for 9 cars but my cars are big cars so I'm not sure but it's going to be close. I've already made some cuts to the trailer and plan on adding some on the back of it. Luck is gonna be on your side a little bit with the scale difference's, trailer being 1/24th and the cars being 25th , here, is mine with 1/24th scale cars, and of them being the same, they are all consider to be small sports cars , you can see, its a tight fit Its a neat project , good luck with the rest of it
Mopar - D Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Here's a mock up of where I'm going. The upper front car on the trailer will be tilted down to get clearance. Looking for more details on the hitch / fifth wheel.
kilrathy10 Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Man, this is outstanding work.....You got it worked out pretty good....That's gonna be Awesome.....
Mopar - D Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Jonathan thanks for sharing your information I saw you build here and decided after seeing it that I would use this trailer instead of the Revell trailer. Thanks JT I'm full time on this one and will be posting more updates today.
Mopar - D Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Thanks Thomas I plan to get this one done soon while I have time off from work.
Mopar - D Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Working on the trailer with the main frames now glued in I'm work on how to get the last bottom car in and I think I will be adding a new ramp section so the car will go in on an angle and not stick out to far in the back. I,see a lot of the trailers set up like this. Know to figure out what to use for the ramp section and how to support it. I've got the front car ramp figured out and the upper middle section I made the front section movable so that it will tilt down in the front and added some braces in the front section where I lowered it. Here's some pictures of where I'm going with the back section. If I get the back to work I will be able to get my 9 cars.
kilrathy10 Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 It'll work....You've got the right idea.....The greatest thing about living in Houston, is that you see SO many variations of the same principle.....I've seen many a setup that this would resemble.....Great job with working it out on the fly....I think I build just about everything thataway....
mustang1989 Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Great plan out here Dan! Looking forward to the progress!
disabled modeler Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 I really dig this project build...the Dodge cab is awesome!
Dandydan Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Awesome Dan-I always wanted to do something similar, but don't know if I have it in me. I'll enjoy yours for now!
Mopar - D Posted December 31, 2014 Author Posted December 31, 2014 Thanks JT so far only 2 pieces were reworked. Thanks Joe and Disabled modeler I have sleeper as well Dan, I've been planning this build for a couple years now and when the reissued this car hauler kit and seeing Jonathan's build on it that was all I needed.
Mopar - D Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 Worked on the gluing the top front and middle sections in place and making a new middle back ramp.
