Rign14 Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Ok I knew that Mack Trucks was owned by Volvo, nothing new there, however I found out today that Volvo, a Swedish company is actually owned by a company in China. I can see it now - Built in the USA by a China Owned Company. Wow
Aaronw Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Ford owned Volvo the car company, they sold it to a Chinese company. Volvo the truck company is separate and still Swedish as far as I know.
Jim B Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 I"m pretty sure the Volvo Cars is owned by a Chinese company, but Volvo Trucks is a seperate entity.
jeffbrad Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 The Chinese bought the car business from Ford a while back but I'm pretty sure the truck side is still Swedish owned.
Chuck Most Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 Yep- they're two different companies. AB Volvo still owns the truck manufacturer, and is itself owned by a Swedish industrial investment firm. The car and truck sides have been separate since the 1990s.
Sixx Posted January 13, 2015 Posted January 13, 2015 (edited) Alright Chuck...you got me swatting my computer thinking there's a bug on it!!! Lol !!!! Dang! Where did the bug go???? Now it's a big ol eyeball ! Edited January 14, 2015 by Sixx
fantacmet Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 The only thing I really know about them, is the Volvo heavy equipment, like backhoes, and the like, are built in South Korea. So small tidbit probably not of much use.
Force Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 (edited) Volvo is in fact 3 companies, the car branch is owned by the Chineese and was separated from the truck and heavy equpiment parts when Ford bought the car business, the truck and heavy equipment branches are still mainly Swedish owned. Volvo Trucks owns Mack, White, Autocar and Renault Trucks (White and Autocar are dropped) and has assembly plants all over the World. The heavy equipment branch called Volvo Construction Equipment are Volvo, Zettelmeyer, Pel-Job, Michigan, Champion, Samsung, Terex Trucks and Ingersoll-Rand, most wheel loaders and articulated haulers are made here in Sweden, motor graders in Canada and excavators in South Korea but all are owned by Volvo. So Volvo trucks...and Mack...in north America are built in the US by a Swedish owned company. Volvo's main cab plant is located here in my home town and some of the cab sheet metal for the North American VN and VH are made here such as the back wall, doors and some more stuff. Rign14 Posted January 18, 2015 Author Posted January 18, 2015 (edited) Sorry guys, I should have googled it before I posted. I was just I don't know upset for lack of a better word when I heard Volvo was onwed by a china company. Not that I care about Volvo, they can be owned by anyone really, I just wish Mack was an American owned company. Mack is an icon of the American roads. Now for those that say you should hate something unless you've tried it, I have, I drove a volvo for a few years while working for American Freightways/ Fed Ex Freight, I hated them. When I returned from deployment in 2003 I asked when I could get my regular truck back (I really hate slip seating), I was told I would have to wait for the normal bid cycle, so I asked about an International that was sitting in the back of the yard. I was told it was a spare that no one wanted assigned to so I took it. I drove it until I left fed Ex Freight. I did get to drive one of the new KW with the auto shift trans, truck was very nice, but that trans would take alot of getting used to (had no place to rest my right hand and I kept trying to clutch it) Edited January 18, 2015 by Rign14
Force Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 (edited) Well Mack hasn't been fully US owned since 1979 when Renault Trucks of France bought in as part owner of Mack and bought out the rest 1990, and Volvo bought Renault Trucks (and Mack) the year 2000. The truck market is hard and Volvo is with all their acquisitions now No: 2 behind Daimler-Benz who still hold the No:1 spot in sales in the World...by the way, Daimler-Benz owns Detroit Diesel, Freighliner, Western Star and Thomas Built Buses in the US. olsbooks Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 (edited) I call it the curse of old man White...or his revenge. Oh, and dont forget Sterling in the Daimler blender...(sorry, I am still calling them Ford's).. So what used to be, then became, that was sold to, has merged with, and was finally restructured as the new and improved...... The sad fate of so many American manufacturing icons Always hate to see a "Rome" collapse or worse yet, have others cast lots for remnants of a once great institution. Sooner rather than later and in most cases, traces of the once great become lost to time. Only those labelled "eccentric" know or care about the truth and history. Now, would not it be some vindication of a fallen flag if Volvo brought back Brockway since they sold off Autocar? Its in the blood lines. The irony just floors me as Brockway and Autocar were like Hatfield and McCoy. Wow, did I unrail this thread?!. Peace Edited January 19, 2015 by olsbooks
fantacmet Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Who bought autocar? It amazes me sometimes. Brand name gets taken down, another entity purchases the name, and then never does anything with it. I understand sometimes when you purchase other things to go with it like vehicle designs or patents or what have you, but when you just pickup the name, and let it sit. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
Force Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 (edited) In 1981 Volvo bought White wich in turn owned the Autocar brand, and folded the Autocar brand in the year 2000, Volvo sold some of the Autocar model manufacturing to GVW Group LLC in 2001 and they are doing 3 models, ACMD, ACX and ACTT. Chuck Most Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 I call it the curse of old man White...or his revenge. Could be Brockway's revenge, with regards to Mack itself. There will come a day when a Mack is nothing more than a Volvo with a Bulldog ornament. Count on that.
Bennyg Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 Could be Brockway's revenge, with regards to Mack itself. There will come a day when a Mack is nothing more than a Volvo with a Bulldog ornament. Count on that. It's almost that now. I got underneath a Titan recently and even it's crossmembers looked awfully volvo like. The cab is really the only true mack thing left.
Rign14 Posted January 22, 2015 Author Posted January 22, 2015 Not sure who owns them, but they are making a sharp spotter and class 7 truck.
