I'm just starting to restore a Monogram Uncertain T and I'm scratching my head as to what the arrowed part that is positioned on the middle of the sump would represent on the real car. Any ideas ?

Electric water pump. I asked Steve Scott the same question a few years ago when I was rebuilding my old UCT.

Thanks Randy.

So is this the correct location for this to be glued?

Its actually moulded to the sump so the location was determined by Monogram.

I am not saying its not an electric water pump...but why would it have what appears to be a pulley on the front? to the point of mounting down there, bottom of oil pan, that is pretty strange but maybe it could be hidden there on the real car. kinda doubt that shape though.

one could say its exact function is rather uncertain.

That pulley should be the harmonic balancer. Also, if you look at the braided lines coming from the front of the heads it would make sense that they go to an electric pump under the engine.

Since this is a rebuild , was it molded on or glued on ? It looks like it has a belt pulley on the front and if anything needs to be moved forward so it can be driven from the harmonic balancer that also appears to drive the alternator. I can't find any reference to it or any pictures of it on the 1:1 car

why would a harmonic balancer be mounted on the front of an electric water pump way back of the drive belts? doesn't make sense. I can certainly see an electric water pump mounted there I guess but haromonic balancer? strange

ps: I kinda want that magazine! another one on the list!

ps ps: turns out that magazine is pretty common, 10 including shipping from ebay. but the problem is it appears the car in question only appears on the cover, there is no article inside like I had hoped. oh well thank goodness for photos of tables of contents!

The harmonic balancer is the BIG pulley on the end of the crankshaft, not the little pulley-looking thing on the "water pump". A water pump won't have a "balancer" on it, harmonic or otherwise.

You're right about the braided lines running from the block ports, where the water pump normally attaches, to under the engine, and there are short lines not connected to anything yet, from the water ports on the heads, where the crossover and thermostat housing attach on a nailhead Buick, which this engine is.

While there are many designs for electric automotive and marine water pumps, here's one that is visually similar. My guess would be that the kit designers may not have fully understood the function of the part, and therefor didn't really try to get the appearance 100% prototypically correct. That has been known to happen on occasion...believe it or not. B)

It is actually molded to the sump and is not a separate part that is glued on so Monogram determined its position.

I've been unable to find any 1.1 photos that show the underside of the car.
