Igor Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 (edited) With a little over two months to go until the NNL East, I have decided, with a little proding from my life-long friend, to build somehing. I have not built anything in almost 3 years... as I have been out-of-work for almost 4 years, and did not think it was a "productive" use of my time to be working on a "hobby" while I am out-of-work... What did I know. Oh, the models I could have built in all this free time! Anyway, I'm starting "light", as I'd like to "ease" back in, I'm starting with the AMT 1969 Ford Torino Cobra... So far, I've de-chromed the head covers and assembled all of the engine that is going to be "Ford engine blue" More to follow, as long as this posts properly from my phone! slusher Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Well you are now officially started.. Looking forward to your progress..
kitbash1 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Nice start. I was in your shoes until last October and did almost no building for three years. Looking for more on this build.
Tom Geiger Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Good luck Jeff! And I hope to see your finished model at NNL East! I was unemployed for over a year myself. I found that model building was one of the things that helped me keep my sanity. I would spend my days in the job hunt, but at 5pm I'd take a break and head to the model room. My wife would get home at 6pm, so I had an hour to spend each night before we started to prepare dinner. I found that during a job search, no matter how hard you work at it, you really aren't 100% in control of the outcomes. It's a very frustrating time. Working on a model at the end of the day would clear my head, and give me something where I could set goals I could achieve. And that year I built and finished more models than at any other time!
Igor Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 OK - the engine is coming together... Pix to follow...
Sledsel Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Test fit alot before you go to far. There are some fitment issues I hear.
Brizio Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Looking forward to see it done, I don't think I ever seen one built.
Igor Posted March 8, 2015 Author Posted March 8, 2015 Engine and transmission have been painted, along with carburator, oil filter, fuel pump, starter, fan, fan belt, and alternator. Oil filter and carburator have been glued to engine, and a length of wire has been added as a fuel line between the fuel pump and carburator. Up next is distributor and plug wires. Also, interior pieces have been painted their base color.
Igor Posted April 10, 2015 Author Posted April 10, 2015 Hello again. Due to circumstances of my own doing, I have been out of commission for the past couple of weeks... However, I am still going to try to get this model finished before NNLEast. I have pretty much finished up the interior: ... I also want to try and get the body painted this weekend, so I have time to work on it before Saturday rolls around.
rsxse240 Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Holy giant rear dashboard, Batman! I bet one could park a mid size sedan in the trunk of that car! Lol Looking good! I've always loved Torinos, you're doing a great justice to this one.
BLOODBANE Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 The dash was huge in these cars, (I had a GT in High School). Loved that car, but it could get you in trouble real quick. As far as the rear deck, I had a ton of speakers in mine. For the build, great job. Makes me go back (more than a few years) to a wasted youth....Good times though
66belair Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 Love the build so far. I have a soft spot for 68-69 Torino's as my mother brought me home from the hospital in one and my cousin was brought home in one the same year when we were born in 71. I wish I knew where they are today.
Igor Posted April 12, 2015 Author Posted April 12, 2015 Engine is assembled... ...and first coat of color has been sprayed on the body, second coat to follow later this afternoon.
Igor Posted April 17, 2015 Author Posted April 17, 2015 OK, model is "assembled" but not quite "finished"... I've still got a little "tweaking" to do tonight... See you at NNLEast!
mustang1989 Posted April 17, 2015 Posted April 17, 2015 Looks to be a clean shine on that paint job there Jeff!!! Lookin' good.
Igor Posted July 18, 2015 Author Posted July 18, 2015 I've decided that I'm not satisfied with how this turned out. I've always been my own worst critic...Mainly, I don't like how the windows fit in the body. I'm going to try replacing them with sheet plastic. This, and a number of other nits I could pick at, has returned this one to the workbench.
Igor Posted July 19, 2015 Author Posted July 19, 2015 I would have posted a photo of it on the workbench, but apparently I can't upload photos from my phone anymore...
Igor Posted September 30, 2016 Author Posted September 30, 2016 I was off from work for a couple of days and got bored, so I have finally gotten around to working on this one... The more I looked at it, the more I realized that I really could have done a better job on it. The paint job was less than perfect, not to mention the color was just plain boring. The engine compartment was missing details I had meant to include. The wheels and tires just didn't work, and the windows never fit properly. I know that I could have done better. Yesterday I started stripping the paint from the body and dashboard (Yellow can oven cleaner), and today I picked up some acrylic craft paint from work (the craft store who's name starts with "M") to repaint it with.
Igor Posted October 3, 2016 Author Posted October 3, 2016 I think I have gotten as much of the old paint off as I'm going to be able to, although not as much as I would have liked. No biggie, a little sanding and a new coat of primer and I'm sure it will be fine.
Igor Posted October 21, 2016 Author Posted October 21, 2016 Sprayed the body with a new coat of primer. Still needs a little bit more sanding.
