Hot Wheels have given me some ideas for builds. I plan on building the AMT 1958 Edsel like Hot Wheels Boulevard white and silver custom 1958 Edsel.

I just open the kit, stare at it a while and the ideas just fall out of my head and splash all over the plastic. It paid off big once:

Which in this case, was a new look at an old idea:

The voices in my head taunt me until I build the model!

Modeling stimuli is all around us. I get ideas from vehicles I see in person, magazine and internet photos and even from models done by others, although I try not to build things that have been done to death.

I'll see a photo of a tired old truck and think, "Can I do that?" and I'm off to try that.

And I've been building a cars / trucks I remember in my past. You know how when you pick up a model, you always think about one car you once knew. Well, I've been committing those to plastic lately. I built my sister in law's lime green Chevette and a friend's circa 1978 Dodge A100 van recently.

“It is good to love many things, for therein lies the true strength, and whosoever loves much performs much, and can accomplish much, and what is done in love is well done.”
Vincent van Gogh

My inspiration comes from my pure love of the subject. I love the play of light off of the painted surface, I love how altering the stance of the chassis, can change the whole attitude of the build. I love how you can recreate the look of a full size subject in miniature. There is no place I don't get inspiration.

Frankly whenever I see something kinda cool from a design standpoint I just naturally try to see if it can be applied to model cars.

I keep a folder on my desktop for just such ideas.

One of my sources is Collectible Automobile, especially when they profile, say the '61 Pontiac and they have old photos of clay models from the styling archives. Stuff like this is just full of ideas that were good but rejected due to complexity or cost.

I normally get mine from my head.

But I also take inspiration from cars I use in video games, or cars I see on things like Speedhunters. It's gotten to the point where I have a folder on my computer now called Inspiration, full of pics of cars I find cool...

Same place as most of us....

We're playing those mind games together
Pushing the barriers, planting seeds
We all been playing those mind games forever
So keep on playing those mind games together
Projecting our images in space and in time

Yes is the answer and you know that for sure

Hmmmm. I really like doing something different. In some cases I'll look at the box and sketch out ideas. Sometimes I have a specific element I want to use on a build like graphics or design cues from a sketch or another build. Sometimes I cut and paste styrene until I like the look.

For me the design is the best part of the project.
