landman Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 These trucks ran the FT series engines which were big block gas engines. I want to try to make it work with the Cat since we are using the more modern Louisville chassis.
checkmate Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Very cool start to an interesting project.
landman Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 Can anyone answer Ben's question in post #3? Does that transmission ring any bells?
Mackvision Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Pretty sure the kit trans. represents an Allison 3000HR 4-speed automatic, but not 100% sure on that.........................Mark
landman Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 Thanks Mark, I thought it looked like an automatic and I guess Allison is the only outfit that makes them big enough, right?
landman Posted February 28, 2015 Author Posted February 28, 2015 (edited) Started mocking up for fit. In order for the wheels to be centered in the wheelwells the cab has to move back about 4 scale inches from the Louisville location. I'll also have to notch the front of the frame and move the rear cab mount. tried it with the interior in place to see. The front cab mounts will work where they are but will need some adding to, either on the mount itself or inside the cab. So that is feasible. What isn't is using the CAT. It just won't clear the tub. Hood's too short. So back to Ben's suggestion of using a big Ford V8. They ran FT 361 & 391. Looked through my stash and the only thing close is the Thunderbird V* from the Ed Roth 56 pickup kit. I wonder if that's a 390? Edited January 12, 2021 by landman
tbill Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 that kit looks to have a 'Y' block in it, so probably a 292 I would think.
Bennyg Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Keep that Cat somewhere handy for another project. Your plumbing is great. Ben
landman Posted February 28, 2015 Author Posted February 28, 2015 Just bought a "correct" 534 on eBay from a junked C600. The cat is going into my background dio until further notice. It'll even get its own custom-built engine stand.
RAT-T Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 THIS LOOKS COOL PAT, CAN I ASK WHERE YOU GOT THE CAB?
landman Posted February 28, 2015 Author Posted February 28, 2015 THIS LOOKS COOL PAT, CAN I ASK WHERE YOU GOT THE CAB? Tom, I got it at Motor City Resin Casters.
RAT-T Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 Tom, I got it at Motor City Resin Casters. OK THANKS PAT

Chuck Most Posted February 28, 2015 Posted February 28, 2015 maybe a gas 460 out of a monogram (?) f350 It would be a good choice for an updated truck, but the 385-series didn't come out until 1968. A 370 version was eventually used in the medium duty Fords, but I think that came after the N-Series was discontinued... though I may be wrong on that.
Dave Toups Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 Chuck, you're correct. The 385 series (370/429/460) wouldn't have been used in the N-Series trucks. The correct gas engines would be the FE-series 361/391 or the 401/477/534 "Super Duty" series engines.
landman Posted March 2, 2015 Author Posted March 2, 2015 (edited) I must have bent 6 feet of paper clips without getting one hinge right. Then, as I was rooting around in the '56 Ed Roth pickup kit, I found these. Looks like I can make them work here. I think I'll also break out my Smooth On casting stuff and attempt to make a few sets. Edited January 12, 2021 by landman
fantacmet Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Wish I had seen this earlier, I could have setup and made a video this weekend for you how to do the wire hinges, and nail them right on almost every time.

It's not too late Michael. In fact the project is on hold until I get the engine. I need that to finalize the location of several items. Is your video one of the ones in the Tips section?
landman Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) Got the engine and started assembling it. It IS a big boy, it dwarfs the y-block which is shown for comparison. Edited January 12, 2021 by landman
Mopar - D Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 That big boy is going to look nice sitting in your truck.
landman Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 The truck will be blue. what clor should I put the wheels? Most photos I've seen of N600's had black wheels. I was thinking red. Would that be too garish?
landman Posted March 10, 2015 Author Posted March 10, 2015 (edited) With the body centered on the wheels, I played with the front crossmember and the rear cab support to locate the engine. If the air filter is to clear the firewall, the rad is too close. The grille has a lot of "meat" so I gouged out a recess for the rad. Looks like it will work. The other alternative would have been to recess the firewall/toeboard thus restricting the driving to drivers under 5 feet. Edited January 12, 2021 by landman
Mopar - D Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 The fun of building with resin. You have to figure out how to make things work. Nice work and with this build its going to look nice when you have the engine set up and able to see it.
