General Lee

Hi guys.

I just got my "new" and "correct" Round2´s General Lee model kit.

Box

Same original art box. The rear provides a quick consult to the content.

Content

5 plastic bags:

-chassi, interior and body

-transparent parts

-decal

-chromed parts

-all other plastic parts

Great!!!! A correct body!!!

But, the same problems still there!

Bad injection, lack of accuracy (where is the 440??? The Hemi still there!), gap between rear body and chassis, huge injection pin marks inside the interior, bad chromed parts, and so on. Ok, it was expected once we all knew that it won't be a new tooling.

But at least the decal sheet should be colored correctly, doesn't it?

Well, not this time!!! Again!!!

I´m disappointed! :D

at least they got the body right thats been the problem forever i wonder if they will ever truly get it right

YES! At least it doesn't have the 500/Charger flush rear window this time! And it's not molded in that cruddy orange plastic! Oddly, their F&F '70 Charger had the correct rear window- but still had the '69 taillamp panel. Sheez!

I'm with Dave, though- this kit is past it's prime, I'd just raid what I needed from the AMT kit, flush the rest down the toilet, and use the Revell Charger as the base kit. Or- if you happen to buy one with a decently molded body, use a '69 GTX chassis underneath it, which will not only give you a better detailed chassis, but the non-Hemi Mopar big block you crave. This kit's already been rereleased to death over the last few years, I'm really surprised (and a touch disappointed) to see it back so soon.

Mark,

Thanks for the history on the MPC Charger kit. This is definitely one set of tooling that has been around the block a time or two. While the new kit is not up to the standard of the Revell Charger, it can be built into a decent kit with some patience and some basic modeling skills. If you want a better detailed chassis, look no further to the AMT 1968 Road Runner/1969 GTX/1970 Super Bee kit.

That MPC Charger 500 was the first model I completed in 2002 when I returned to the hobby.

If you get the opportunity to see the original 1968 and 1969 annuals up close and personal, you will find the proportions and details to be spot on and more accurate to the 1:1 than the much revered Revell kit. I like them so much that I have two 1968 builders, three 1969 builders and one mint unbuilt 1969 kit in my collection. If anyone would like comparison pics of the Revell body with an "original" MPC 1969 Charger annual body, I would be happy to oblige.

Mark, the history your posted hopefull will show what a piece of history this kit really is. And for us long time builders, it is a trip back to the days of $2.00 model kits. Thanks for sharing.

GREAT history lesson Mark. I got a couple of ALL of them except the Nascar versions. Only have the K&K insurance kit. I do have the DIE-CAST version of the 70 F&F kit, it looks MUCH nicer than the plastic version, but not as accurate as the original 70 MPC kit. I had an extra 70 interior bucket and seats layin around, so I used it an made a stock 70 outta it. Still not as nice as the original, but it did come out nice, for a die cast!:lol:

The coloring of those decals looks fine to me.

you wanna build a General Lee? buy this kit and take the decals out and the wheels and tires, throw the rest away. pick up a Revell '69 Charger kit and paint it whatever color you like underneath and in the engine bay, use whatever engine you like. paint the body orange and use the decals from this kit. dechrome the wheels, paint them silver and black and throw them on there too. make sure you dirty up the underside and then put it on display with the nice Round2 box and be done with it. there is no such thing as a truly accurate General Lee model.

Dave

Your right Dave there isn't but boy can I try.:lol::lol:

my queston is if they can make a correct body for ff why the bloody hell cant they do that for the dukes kit i mean shure now tthey fix the body have how meny years ?? i gess this is a case of noncomp

Yes a perfect body can be done by copying a vintage annual kit, but it all depends on how much limited funds you want to trow at it..

the queston still remains if they have the mold for the ff charger why not fit the screw up long ago it seems like a smart idea to me

Agreed....there are a ton of MPC Chargers out there in various forms on modeler's shelves already, and a decent '69 Charger kit is available courtesy of Revell/Monogram. If I had to make a choice between pouring alot of money into this kit or restoring the Meyers Manx it's a no-brainer.

And for the record...Round 2 did spend a little money cleaning up the GL. I saw the first test shots they received-the body in the box is a noticable improvement.

ok,well what is the deal with the 70 style /daytona hood in the kit,and the inserts from the 71/72 charger grill?I agree, they should of scanned a mint 69 body and remolded it,I would have bought it for that,as long as they fixed the 70 style hood, they also need to do that with the 71 Demon,to bring that back,I'll send them my mint kit to do it!

actually, if you want to save yourself some trouble get the 68 charger body and use the separate fascia inserts on the back from the 69 as well as the grille. when i did MY General i used the body shell from the OOP Dick Landy 68 charger kit, or you can get the one from the 68 Charger Limited Edition. I used the 69 body combined with the fascia and grille from the 68 kit to make a 68 charger with the 'rubber roof' ;). and my memory may be off but i THINK the original 'General Lee' lettering for the older issues was black instead of blue, so it looks like the decal set in the current re issue looks dead on. now all you need is the rebel flag decal for the front plate and the CHE 320 plate on the back .

My only problem with the revell 69 Charger is the front bumper looks TOTALY wrong,it is way to big,I would use the revell 69,and cut the grill inserts from the grill and use the amt-mpc General Lee kit for that and the wheels,or use the custom wheels from the 69 AMT Buick Riviera, those are actualy the correct wheels for the General Lee

or the ones from the 'Ecklers' corvette, but for those who do not have access to those rims, the kit sourced ones look pretty good if stripped and repainted in the proper colors .
