John Verkerk Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 This is a pretty cool project ,I like this style as well.
afx Posted May 25, 2018 Author Posted May 25, 2018 (edited) Thanks Trevor & John. Dann I think we are both a bit OCD and if i mess up the engine I'll just glue the hood shut. Front flares roughed-in. Edited May 25, 2018 by afx
afx Posted May 26, 2018 Author Posted May 26, 2018 (edited) The flares are not as tall or wide as they should but they are restricted due to the wheel well size. On her feet: Edited May 26, 2018 by afx 1
afx Posted May 26, 2018 Author Posted May 26, 2018 (edited) It’s not appropriate to call this a 924 GTS due to several compromises I had to make with the build. So for my sanity and so I can continue the build I am going to refer to it for what it is: a 944 Turbo Rally. Porsche never created such a car, to the best of my knowledge, so this will be semi-fictitious "fantom" build. Edited May 26, 2018 by afx
aurfalien Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 Hi, Super clean and tight as usual. I'm eager to see your engine work on this bad boyeeeeee.
afx Posted May 28, 2018 Author Posted May 28, 2018 (edited) You like to see me suffer don't you Brian. Thanks Dann. Rear seat infill and start of the roll cage. The spare wheel comes from the Fujimi EM kit but being 14" is too small, the rally cars ran 16". Cut up a wheel rim to create a sleeve the correct size. Opened up the engine bay either side of the block to make it more realistic. Edited May 29, 2018 by afx
Twokidsnosleep Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 I fully support the 944 deviation to the plan...that is one of my favourite Porsche cars
afx Posted May 29, 2018 Author Posted May 29, 2018 I prefer the 944 to the 924 as well Scott - thanks. Need a bit more cleanup on the "welds" but the roll cage is otherwise complete. Created the racing windows.
afx Posted May 30, 2018 Author Posted May 30, 2018 (edited) Thanks Ashley. While doing more research I found this video on the restoration of one the 1980 Le Mans 924 GTPs. Edited May 30, 2018 by afx
afx Posted May 31, 2018 Author Posted May 31, 2018 A fellow forum member was kind enough to send me this glue bomb as a parts donor. Here is the stock kit engine. I’ve started the race engine conversion by fabricating the inter-cooler plenum from sheet stock and the intake plenum from rod and tubing. I re-purposed some pulleys from the glue bomb to represent the timing belt.
porschercr Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Impressive, JC, ...and this is only the start of the fab work on the engine. Trevor
afx Posted May 31, 2018 Author Posted May 31, 2018 Thanks Walter. Unfortunately your right Trevor much more work in the engine bay.
ismaelg Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Darn it! Now I want that 924 GTP..... Absolutely love it!
aurfalien Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Hi, My best friend had a 924 after high school. I helped him work on it, boy did that car handle! No one wanted it so I helped pitch in a we got it. Just a regular old 924 that handled like no ones business. And it was pretty darn fast.
afx Posted May 31, 2018 Author Posted May 31, 2018 (edited) Thanks Ismael. I've read Brian that with the trans-axle at the back and only the engine in front (no transmission) the 924/944 have 50/50 weight distribution which contributes to their good handling. More engine detail: fuel injectors made from bits of hex rod a simple fuel injector pump made from square rod and another pulley from the glue bomb donor rear mounted 4-cylinder distributor from R&MCoMD kit turbo placed in prep for new plumbing Edited May 31, 2018 by afx
IJ001 Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 (edited) So much good work here. Ian. Edited June 1, 2018 by IJ001
Dann Tier Posted June 2, 2018 Posted June 2, 2018 JC, its looking FANTASTIC!!!....extremely klean work!!…..love it!!
89AKurt Posted June 2, 2018 Posted June 2, 2018 I'm a rally fan, so of course I love this! Fun thing about such a subject, you don't have to duplicate the real thing (like my 959 Paris Dakar). Sure looking good! Cheers.
afx Posted June 2, 2018 Author Posted June 2, 2018 (edited) Thanks guys for the interest. I've been struggling Kurt with the issue that the build doesn't more closely replicate the 1:1 so I think I'm heading in a new direction. Edited June 2, 2018 by afx 1
Can-Con Posted June 2, 2018 Posted June 2, 2018 I hope you do that headlight treatment on the model. It's a really cool look.
