Aardvark 1/24 Maserati Tipo 61 kit question

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

recently purchased one of Andy Martin’s Birdcage resin kits and I was really surprised at how small the car is. Almost makes the model seem closer to 1/32 scale. From the dimensions listed online and pictures of the car, it does seem like a tiny car.

Has anyone had experience with this kit? Is the Birdcage really this small?

(and this might seem like a ridiculous question but does resin shrink over time? Haha)

I built Andy's kit of the standard Birdcage and did not notice it being small but then I did not get the ruler out to measure it.   Unfortunately I no longer have the model in my possession.

Thanks JC. I'm pretty sure resin doesn't shrink over time so I'm gonna trust Andy haha

Thanks for the pics Gary, beautiful build. If you have any more pictures of this I'd love to see them! Sometimes with the rough initial resin casts it's hard to imagine a quality build coming out of it but as I can see from your build, this kit looks outstanding. Your kit looks like the exact same version I have. Unfortunately the decals for the no. 6 Telar Special car have seemed to succumb to age. I will have to go with the decals included for Jim Hall's no 66 white car.

I will see if I have any more pictures but as I mentioned I no longer have the model.  I foolishly sold it when I needed more space for my Le Mans models.  I do have lots of photos of the real thing though.  Have you checked to see if you got all the pieces?  I might have some spares.

I would give anything to see this kit back on the market. The Maserati Birdcage is truly one of my favorites!

I built about 40 of Andy's birdcage when I was contracting my building services. 33 of the cars were the Gurney/Moss Nuburgring car and the others were various drivers, Penske, hall, Andrey, etc.

This is the long tail car, it has a much longer windscreen, longer tail(natch), and you can see the sides are more 'slab-sided'. Any also did this version as well but I'm not sure it was ever sold to public. It may have been, I built a few of them that were sold as built ups only.

Hi Jason, these are a small car.  According to "The Magnificent Front-engined Birdcages" by Oosthoek and Bollee the Type 60 and 61 both have a wheelbase of 88", front track 50", rear track 48", body length (standard) of 152", body width 60" and height 36".  I built a couple a while back that I believe were based on the Aardvark body. The link is

These look so good I need to pull my untouched kit down and try my hand at it.
