In the middle is the modified male buck I provided to Mini Exotics to make the mold for the coupe. At the bottom is a built up Mini Exotics kit. It was designed to be used with the Monogram 427 kit and works well. The rear window and sunroof should be tinted blue. ETC. Seldom mentioned is the Shelby Collection 1/24 diecast of the original Cobra CSX 2000 which can be used for 260-289 projects and has poseable front wheels. Now returning to our regularly scheduled program. Gary....this is valuable information. It will help me a lot. The finished car is exquisite. I feel fortunate to know the original creator of this kit. Thanks for posting.
vamach1 Posted April 18, 2020 Author Posted April 18, 2020 (edited) Yes Gary - thanks for posting the coupe pictures and "the real story." ? Today I am going to try out the Shelby diecast to see if it can be used as the chassis for the Lindberg project. I should have bought more of these when they were around as I think they were $20 at ToysRUs a few years ago. Maybe a HRM engine kit can go in the project Coupe too. Also a shout out to Gerry Chevalier who was one of the early resin casters who sold several transkits back in the 90s. (67 Shelby 1/25, 69 Shelby convertible, Mirage GT40, Super Coupe, GT40 roadster, etc.). He still sells some transkits via Facebook including 67-69 Mustang coupes and a Cougar fastback concept. vamach1 Posted April 18, 2020 Author Posted April 18, 2020 So nothing conclusive yet but I'd say the 427 chassis is a much better fit. The 289 chassis is very narrow. Of course the Coupe should be based on the 289 chassis so should I go for accuracy or a less thanpercent solution and make the 427 chassis look like the 289 one (leaf spring front suspension and other differences) that will been seen since I have opened up the front? Feel free to weigh in as nothing is final but here are some pictures to see what the options are. The 427 chassis from the Super Coupe and Monogram combo and other is from the Revell diecast.
vamach1 Posted April 18, 2020 Author Posted April 18, 2020 Okay - to cover more bases here is the Gunze Sanyo chassis (very basic) and the body of the HRM kit and the AMT 289 kit. It would be interesting to see if the HRM chassis (which I need to build) would be a good fit but given the expense of the kit that is not a realistic option unless I can get Brad to make just a chassis. He actually borrowed my Lindberg body for a while but given that he already makes a beautiful compete Daytona Coupe resin kit I guess his time was better spent on other projects for his entusiasts and customers.
Gramps46 Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 (edited) I think I would recommend you stick with the Monogram 427 chassis and convert the front end to leaf spring configuration for the Lindberg. That will also give you the chance to adjust the wheelbase to match the body if needed. Wheelbase on the various Daytona kits is a whole differ discussion. On my Gunze Daytona builds I lengthened the chassis and bodies to match the Monogram 427 kit and the LIndberg kit wheelbase because I thought they looked more appropriate that way. This is a photo of CSX2299 given to me by Michael Shoen when he owned it. He said the photo shoot was for a Japanese model company. Edited April 18, 2020 by Gramps46
65slotcar Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 Gary, outstanding looking Super Coupe ! don't know why , but not many Daytona Coupe model kits on e-bay. missed out on the model factory hiro kit.
hack-n-whack Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 Wishful thinking ! I would like a 1/25th scale Daytona coupe. It seems to me that all the models are done in 1/24th.

Between Gary and my buddy Peter ? I should be able to make something presentable and accurate. The coupe Peter and me are next to is actually a McClusky but I did see Peter with CSX2287 in Washington DC when it became the 1st car to be chosen by the HVA. I am glad I bought Peter's book in 1996 as they are going for crazy money now. I have never bought one of the HIRO kits - they just seemed to be very expensive for the average modeler. Actually there was a 1/25 Cobra Daytona body that will fit on an AMT Cobra chassis, It is a plastic slot car body made by K&B which was part of Aurora and you can still find it on eBay. There were actually 2 versions of it.
cobraman Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 Kyosho has a very nice Daytona Cobra slot car body.

After seeing your pictures I looked up the Kyosho Daytona and saw that it was listed as 1/27. What did you plan to use for your project. Do you think it would still fit on an AMT chassis?
vamach1 Posted April 19, 2020 Author Posted April 19, 2020 (edited) Those K&B bodies look nice. I may have to keep an eye out on Ebay but it seems the nostalgia factor drives up the price to the absurd given that no one would actually race one on a track. ? Edited April 19, 2020 by vamach1
cobraman Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 On my project I was planning on using a Revell chassis . The side pic shows that the wheelbase needs to be shortened a bit .
vamach1 Posted April 19, 2020 Author Posted April 19, 2020 One more test fit. This is a Majorette 427 Cobra chassis (with bottom part of the engine cut out). Not bad.

Len Woodruff Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 (edited) I built both the HRM full detail kit and the Gunze-Sanyo kits. Edited April 19, 2020 by Len Woodruff

They are AWESOME and show the HRM kit is top of the line and the Gunze one filled a gap for a long time but for what they sell for these days the HRM one is a better investment and a lot more detailed. DonW Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 This car ran at around 185 mph or maybe a bit more on the M1 motorway very early one morning. It got leaked to the press and led to our accursed 70 mph speed limit in Britain. 'Sorry Officer, I can't hear you.'

Gramps46 Posted April 19, 2020 Posted April 19, 2020 Really great looking models Len. Congratulations.
65slotcar Posted April 20, 2020 Posted April 20, 2020 Len, Daytona Coupes look great and really like it in red. i wonder if Carroll Shelby did that to take a jab at Ferrari and piss off Enzo.
