How to remove an emblem frpm a grill.

 I've got a 68 charger that I want to convert to a 318 car like the one that my dad bought brand new. Does anyone have any ideas on how to remove the R/T emblem from the grill without messing up the fins on the grill?

Cut out that section of grille and replace it with a section from another grille.

Not so easy finding another MPC '68 Charger annual grille though. would a section from a Revell '68 match?

I could potentially have the right grill you need to do the swapping of that section. I'll check tomorrow and let you know.

You could maybe use a curved photo etch saw blade that fits in a hobby knife and VERY carefully whittle it out of there??

This is the best route if you don't wanna deal with trying to remove the symbols.  Tamiya flat chisel would work pretty good at removing the lettering with patience.

If you tried to sand it out, I would use tape over the areas to protect the grill next to the RT.  Just keep replacing the tape if you sand through it.  Good Luck.

If you could source a second grill it might be cleaner and easier to cut the entire "teeth" section from the surround, cut them both in half and using both passenger sides -flip one and glue to represent the driver side. This would give you just one vertical seam to deal with.

Dpate's suggested PE replacement is the hot setup if you want a really nice job....unless you're really really good working with riffler files and micro tools under magnification.

But how would you deal with the thick horizontal bar across the center?

The '68 grille doesn't have that, that's why I didn't recommend the PE set strait off.

I wouldn't deal with it at all.

Frankly, I think the horizontal bar would look vastly better than the almost inevitable hacked and bodged mess that would result from any of the other suggested methods.

Better yet, just paint the grille section flat black and just highlight the "Charger" script. It would hide the RT emblem behind a rectangular emblem [3 on that '70 photoetch sheet] and it would look pretty good.

Your pic matches the photoetch besides the bar in the center i doubt it'd be that noticeable once it's inside the actual part painted or not painted shadows would help with that.  But there looks like there is different versions of the grille (or maybe the black painted version makes the vertical part stand out more) because this pic here is more on point with the kit part. The 2nd pic is on par with your pic.   Either way would look great unless he is dead set on being perfect with it? Than might have to try and find a different option resin or something if it exist.

It's just the way they're painted, Dusty.

If you look closely at the grille in the gold car, just under the gap between the Charger lettering and emblem,  you can just make out the small horizontal bars in the grille.

The silver paint on the vertical bars hides them well compared to the all black grille.

I think the photo etch set would be your best route. But, if you don't want to go that route, I would grind the backside of the grille away until it comes loose from the surround. Then it will be much easier to work with. Cut the R/T emblem close to the bars, sand flush and use a thick blade razor saw or appropriate sized file to cut in the recesses. Once you're done, glue an oversized piece of .010 styrene to the backside of grille and glue it back to the surround.
