I call it the curse of old man White...or his revenge. Oh, and dont forget Sterling in the Daimler blender...(sorry, I am still calling them Ford's).. So what used to be, then became, that was sold to, has merged with, and was finally restructured as the new and improved...... The sad fate of so many American manufacturing icons Always hate to see a "Rome" collapse or worse yet, have others cast lots for remnants of a once great institution. Sooner rather than later and in most cases, traces of the once great become lost to time. Only those labelled "eccentric" know or care about the truth and history. Now, would not it be some vindication of a fallen flag if Volvo brought back Brockway since they sold off Autocar? Its in the blood lines. The irony just floors me as Brockway and Autocar were like Hatfield and McCoy. Wow, did I unrail this thread?!. Peace

For those that remember the movie "The Jerk"....we say, "The new bumpers are here! The new bumpers are here! Thousands of people will look at this every single day! Now I am somebody! Lugnut got a package from JC Whitney (for those that remember that name) today. His new bumper arrived! And so, like Alfie and his Red Ryder BB gun, the paper was flying... This actually was our first real attempt at something large with Alclad. VERY low pressure and very thin coats. Is it as good as chrome? Nope. And it is not advertised as such...just close. Lugnut busted his lugnuts on the gloss black primer and getting that bumper smooth. The results have paid off for a burned out derelict. I have seen mixed reports about various things from brushing it with a makeup brush to a microfiber towel. That might get some of the "dusty" appearance out but for now, he is happy so we are not going there. Heck, I really had a struggle keeping him away from trying polish it. Railings and small parts are one thing, but trying to get a large piece of flat plastic to come out good out quite another. Oh, and we have decided on paint colors. Black lower, white upper with bright orange, bright green and bright purple "stripes" in much the style of Generals paint patterns. Basically the colors will be the same as used on the Chevy "Official Pace Truck" in 93 I believe. Lugnut saw one the the other day and grunted, "purdee colors".. And so it was written and so it shall be done. But we got a LONG way to go before paint but it provides a bit of a dangling carrot to get back to work on the firewall (and thanks Cappy for the pix) and interior. Peace.

Excellent looking. I had never considered the q tip/lacquer thinner trick. Obviously it works and goes in the bag of tricks. Thanks for sharing. Peace. -
I really like this. Just enough customization to set it apart and ditto the comments on the weathering/aging. Peace

First off WELCOME! they look SUPER! Lots of nice guys on here willing to share experiences and tricks and all skill levels represented. A truly positive place with lots of encouragement. And so another first scratch scratchbuilder enters the dark side. Is there some sort of death ray from Andromeda or something going on I should know about? Peace.

Decisions, decisions. While still toying with the Smokey and the Bandit II paint scheme with Generals Quarters, I did some poking around and stumbled across a couple of oddities. As GMC was eyeballing Volvo/White for an outlet to dump the heavy division, a few oddities were built like the Generals Quarters for shows and promo's. I honestly thought I had seen all the "factory sponsored" variations but the square headlights, grille treatment, and torpedo fuel tanks was a surprise. I dont know a thing about the history of this one. My personal jury is still out. But the paint scheme and sleeper hold some interest and seem in line with Lugnut character Comments? Peace

This thing REALLY is turning out fantastic. The mudflaps are still my favorite part....LOL Selfishly, I would love a lesson on how you detailed the instrument panel. Like the rest, it looks super. -
Gonna be nice! Stick with it!

If you mess with acrylics, consider Vallejo. They have oodles of whites/creams. It is only about $3 a bottle full price at Hobby Lobby though HL does not carry the full line. It can be diluted down for use in an airbrush. Vallejo's website has real good color charts. Good luck. Peace. -

Kenny, one of these days I hope to get somewhere in the same ballpark (even if just in the parking lot) as this level of true craftsmanship. A true work of art and demonstration of talent. Peace -

WOW! Thank you SO much for taking time to walk an imbecile like me thru the process. Your willingness to take the time to detail even the simplest of stuff has taught me far more than you could imagine. Peace -

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! well..err....them. Now you just need the song Queen "fat bottom girls" blaring in the background. I simply MUST have a set! Mudflaps are sort of becoming my calling card....like JT and his beautiful orange paint jobs. Hey, we all gotta have a fixation, no? And your statement, "not as steady as I used to be and twice as blind", brother I can relate and is why I ditched 1:87, am about out of 1:25 and going for 1:16. Well, back to deliberating the glue bomb Aero Astro and other world events..... -
Your going to do well. I am assuming you will be using a spray can. Metallics can be tricky if this is your first go round with them. Make sure you wash it well, prime it good with a light color primer, and sand it gently with some ultra fine sandpaper before going with a light blue metallic. Colors like this out of a can (for me anyway) are not the most friendly as they are easy to have run or be splotchy. Constantly shake it and lots of very, very thin coats. It does not take lots of $ to pull off a good build on these. A good hobby knife, sandpaper, and patience is needed more than anything. Look forward to seeing lots posts as you progress on this thing! Lots of guys here eager and willing to help if something does not seem to be going right. Peace

As a former RR modeler, my two bit suggestion is to kill any gloss and weather it to no end. There are LOTS of good youtubes of these engines. If you look for Union Pacific Challenger or Big Boy (their two big articulated engines) you can get a real good idea of typical grime. If you have never tried washes, this is a fantastic kit to try it on as "too much" is never a concern with a steam engine. Look at the colors...not the "paint" and you will see a huge difference. For example, if you do alclad, use it on the top of the rails and the wheel surfaces but beyond that, everything is basically grays, blacks, and browns. It is a great little kit and is indeed "HO" scale. Lots of model RR folks get them and just park them on their layout. A whole lot cheaper than a $1000 one that runs.. Good luck and keep us posted. Peace.

ONLY since you asked......... Paint the tanks the frame color with black straps. Paint the Luberfiner black. Dull silver single exhaust, black mirrors, single horn, white steering wheel, lowback seats, painted front bumper with a big single elongated diamond or similar painted in the colors of the cab/hood. Those wheels and colors just really make this thing scream "early 70's no frills fleet rig". BTW - not nitpcking as I am the last one qualified to do - check your Luberfiner closely. It looks like it might be on upside down.. But it is yours...Heck, if you want to put Hello Kitty mudflaps I am good with that too! I really like this little thing. -
Applause, cheers, waving bic lighters in unison, throwing roses at the stage and other assorted fanfare This is most incredible. And to think I cant even pull off a decent set of homebuilt grab irons.... WOW. You are setting an incredibly high mark. Keep it up. Very, very impressive and inspiring to this glue bomber and bird turd solder junky. Peace.
