How to best scribe panel lines?
clovis replied to clovis's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks guys!!!!! -
I am new here too, and have found nothing but the best in help and advice. When you think about it, it really is amazing how other modelers are helping a schmuck like me. Except for a few 4-H entries, I haven't build a car model in 25 years....and everyone here has answered every question I've had, no matter how basic it is. I am thankful for that help.

How to best scribe panel lines?
clovis replied to clovis's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thank you for the replies!!!!!!! They are appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
I am returning to the hobby after a 25+ year hiatus. I have a lot to learn. Somewhere on the net, maybe here, I saw a tip about how a modeler should scribe the factory panel lines for more realism. These lines are around the fenders and the trunk. How is this best accomplished? Use an X-acto knife? Should I use the back side of the blade, and just start pulling it along the lines? How deep should I go with the scribed lines? This body is pretty thick...the AMT 1:16 Mustang. Thank you in advance!!!!!!! I appreciate your help!!!! I'm hoping this is my best build ever...

Sorry to bump an old thread...but when I saw the truck, I thought it was a 1:1. When I first saw the pics, I thought "That is a cool derby car model, but why did he add pictures of his real truck? And how did he position the derby car so it appeared to be on the back of his daily driver?" Nice job!!!!

building drag strip dioramaS?
clovis replied to Mrdarkmonkey96's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I saw a drag strip once, many years ago, where the builder used a standard asphalt single from a house roof, and sprayed painted it many times to achieve the look of pavement. The many layers of paint help fill in the shingle and made it look much flatter, if that makes any sense. He then masked off the starting line and sprayed it in numerous coats of white paint to get the build up that he was wanting. The finished product looked good. -
Tom, Thank you!!!!!! Your model is STUNNING!!!!! That is just the look that I am wanting!!!! My wife thinks that I should do the whole Mustang in red, just like you did. I'm wanting to build a 64 Mustang that looks like someone started fixing up in 1982, and then parked the car under a tree and walked away from in 1986. So, if I primer with light gray, then dark red, and then rattle can red, I should get the same effect that you did? Would you kindly share the sanding process? Did you start with 1000, and then down to 600? Did you work with any of the salt methods to get a rust look?

I'm returning to the hobby after a 25+ year hiatus. I'm still in the planning process of building a rusty junker, Dr. Cranky style. While most of the car will be a rust bucket, I'd like to paint one fender or door red to indicate that the fender had been replaced with a junkyard part. I have some bright red in a rattle can. Since rebuilding my paint stock from scratch, (someone stole my model supply box) is expensive, I'd like to use what I have on hand. Is there any way to spray the bright enamel red onto the fender, and then weather it, other than spraying with dull coat? Thank you for your helpfulness!!!!!!!!

Use primer on everything in the kit?
clovis replied to clovis's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thank you, fellow builders! I think I am going to try primer on most parts, on a sprue to sprue basis. Again, thanks!!! -
I am returning to the hobby after a 25+ year hiatus. This Mustang build in 1:16 will be the first car that I've ever used primer on the body. FWIW, I am an out of the box builder, using rattle cans and mostly Testor's bottles. Should I go ahead and primer all the parts before painting them? It seems that a light coat of primer would add depth and a tad bit of realism to the engine and interior after it is primed and painted. Sorry for asking such a dumb question....just trying to make my build a little better. Thanks in advance!!!
