Really like the color combo's. Where did you get the resin window cranks & door handles from? I would like to try them on some future builds.

AMT '40 Ford Sedan early 60's style drag car updated 3/29/14

Got a little more done this week. I still have to detail paint the engine, running boards & rims. Interior finished, glass is polished. I lost some paint again due to some over sanding again.Lost some along both edges and along the area where the fender welt would be on the 1:1 car. I'm thinking of shooting some paint in a cup and touching up these areas with a brush. Also lost some paint on the passenger side trim. I'm going to order some BMF in a few weeks and attempt my first foil work. The finish is much glossier than the pictures show, I also need to work on my photography. -
There's no wrong way to build a '40 Ford!!!

I like the look that you accomplished. Has a built from the box in the 60's look to it.

Just got back to building again myself after being away for years. I see you live up the road a bit from me in Archdale. Do you know Rich Oakley by any chance?

Found this on the HAMB while researching early 60's speed equiptment decals. Perhaps this could be pinned for future reference? https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2006u57wp7sqpxt/eZJPZZcJdZ

I've already tried Slixx, no luck. Of all the old decal sheets that I have these were the only two that had M&H decals on them. I'm going to scan these before I use them but I would like to find source for more of them.

AMT '40 Ford Sedan early 60's style drag car updated 3/29/14

Thanks for the comments. This is only my second full build in about 30 years. Previously I had just been using bodies for oval track slot cars. I hope to have this done by this weekend, next up either an AMT '32 Ford coupe or AMT '61 Ranchero. -
Nice. I'd go with the tri power setup also for the low buck look.

Moving along with this build. I had a few setbacks with paint and detailing. I will need to reshoot the L/F fender as I was a bit heavy handed with the sanding and have to give the roof a few more coats. The detail painting of the hubs & lugnuts didn't come out as well as I wanted plus the rims really needed some more color on them. They are in the pond awaiting some good weather to prime & paint them again. Also need to prime & paint the engine, steering column & the magneto. Need to research the colors of the Mallory magneto caps, I'm thinking red. Mocked up with the M&H white letter tires and 50 Ford PU front whitewalls. I had stripped the chrome from the lowered axle and that was painted yellow along with the rest of the suspension. Both hoods were warped and had issues with the trim. Straightened one and filed & sanded to get this fit. Interior nearly finished. Headers need some work, inside of both collectors were hollow. I filled the one collector side with a reworked plastic toothpick, still needs some filing & sanding. This is basically a practise build for the box art versions I'd like to do in the future. Need to find a couple of sets of the original Trophy Series headers that exit behind the front tires for the sedan & coupe kits. I have a set of the original decals that need to be scanned & reprinted. -
I thought a WIP on this may help improve my skills. I'm using the Millenium issue '40 sedan for this build. The body had some molding issues that I've tried to correct to the best of my current abilities. Goal is to have a nice looking shelf model with a glossy finish. Going to spend a little extra time on paint, sanding and polish on this one. Colors are Krylon Peekaboo Blue gloss for the exterior, rims and under the hood. The interior is Krylon Pebble satin with Krylon Sun Yellow gloss for the suspension. Old's engine will be a flat yellow with Hilborn injection. Chassis is Krylon Black satin. First color coat and I see that this area needs some attention. Interior painted, going to do a little detail work on the dash. Also going to try and clean up the seam along the front seat top a little bit. The pictures really show the faults. Also need to do a better job on the engine seams. Engine is in the tank right now. I use a denture bath container for stripping chrome and small parts. Has a basket you can hang to drain the parts. Just make sure you have an adequate amount of liquid in it when you hang the basket so it doesn't tip over. Rims painted, just need lug nuts & hubs detailed with semi gloss black. I'm undecided on the white letter or the whitewall M&H's. Fronts are from the Revell/Monogram '50 Ford PU.

Yes, the undercarriage could use a little detailing. Right now I'm just trying to build some decent shelf models and work on fine tuning my builds. Thanks for pointing that out, it's going to help improve my builds (I hope).

Thanks for the kind comments and suggestions. Foiling & washes are on the list of future techniques to conquer. I'm starting a build thread on my next project as I've seen what was missed on this build from the final pictures.

The first complete model that I've built in over 15 years from when I started it. Previous builds have just been bodies that I used for 1/25 slot cars. Built as an early 60's hot rodders WIP drag car. Box stock except for the front tires which are from the Revell/Monogram '50 Ford PU. Paint is Krylon dark gray primer, gloss black chassis and gloss and flat red used for the engine, suspension and interior. Not show quality but looks good on the shelf. Pictures show a lot of faults, gives me some things to improve on in the next builds. I've tried a magnavisor but it didn't work well for me. Eyesight & lack of a steady hand at 60 years of age shows in certain places on the finished build. On the bench right now is an AMT '40 Ford sedan that I'm also building as an early 60's drag car.

While doing some errands yesterday spotted this Willys about a mile from where I live. Stopped in as it was the first time I had ever seen it parked outside. I spoke with the owner and he mentioned it was one of ten that he knew of that was stock. It was found in a barn in Maine intact but needing a restoraton. Paint and bodywork is about 20 years old, original seat and door panels need to be redone. I need to stop back and reshoot the interior pics. Original engine has been rebuilt, oil bath air filter converted to paper element for ease of maintenance.

Thanks for the welcomes. Going to try some outdoor shots of the '40 coupe today.

I've been registered here for quite awhile and finally getiting around to doing an intro. Basics; 60 years old, started building around 1963 tapered off early 70's, never was an exceptional builder. Built a few models early 80's,again nothing exceptional. Then life, jobs, and moves put a hold on building. Got involved with slot racing mid 80's to present on & off. Mainly ran Parma FCR with model bodies as either Bombers, Late Models or Cup cars. Finished an AMT '40 Ford coupe last week that I probably started about 15 years ago. I'm working on an AMT 40 Ford sedan now, after that most likely an AMT '32 Ford coupe. I figured it would be easier to build what I did as a youngster to get some experience again. I don't have any pics of the finished '40 yet, need to try some outdoor shots as the pics I took inside didn't appeal to me. I'm in awe of the work that is shown here, my goal now is to get some decent paint laid down & put them together as cleanly as possible. I've spent considerable time reading over the tips & question forums, picked up a lot of valuble info from them. My avatar and screen name come fom my days racing "stock" VW's at Freeport Stadium on Long Island back in 1973.
