New kits with flaws.
jbwelda replied to Dave Metzner's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
you DID notice the word "disappointed" in the graphic above was misspelled? just goes to show ya... jb -
to call joe cocker exploited in that he was "led around in a drug induced haze" is to totally misstate the situation to the point that I wonder just exactly what you "know" about that time and that particular situation. most of the time it was joe cocker who was doing the leading around, in a drug induced haze or not. you seem to think this guy was an angel who was corrupted by his partners in music. pretty much the opposite of the case. I don't think Joe Cocker did much in the way of dope; he was an alcoholic most of his life and particularly during that time he was noted for falling dead drunk off the stage, though on that tour he was kept in check by Leon Russell at least enough to keep him vertical throughout the set. perhaps there was some "alcohol in pill form" but generally speaking he did not really partake like a lot of people around him did and he certainly never got into the heroin like a lot of those people did at the time. No one was "exploiting" Joe Cocker any more than any rock star is "exploited" (which is probably less than the average working stiff is exploited in their day to day life). and yes I was there, and yes I had something to do with locally occurring events (San Francisco and northern california). as for watching the film, I did so when it came out and a few times after that. but you didn't have to watch the film if you were there to watch the events unfolding. a lot of that trash was for the camera just like in the Robert Frank's Stones film (never released officially that I know of but a real underground hit at the time) C*cksucker Blues about their 72 tour (and featuring Bobby Keys prominently). as for "nominations" I think I know of at least one person you are going to mention and all I have to say about it is he is still alive despite predictions to the contrary and on a track to die eventually from old age. like this person himself says: if everything you have heard about me were true I would have been dead a long time ago. its funny how I share a bit of knowledge and get called, sarcastically, "Professor Music" by a supposed moderator. should I seek your permission to post next time? with that I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and hope all is peaceful in your part of the world. jb

New kits with flaws.

>fantastically tooled, intricate model kits didn't the Grand Sport feature a half molded tube frame that was covered with sink marks and parting lines? its what stopped me from even considering building it without being able to devote the time for massive cleanup just shows you can shoot holes in anything, nothing is perfect, nothing is universal. jb -
I like that shorter one much more than the extended one. this photo makes the back look very reminiscent of a Lotus Europa. jb

very nice clean build. did you hinge the bubble top with those little bitty hinge pin things? it does look like yours sits just like mine, I think it needs a good lowering of the body all around but it would be a bear to do it. specially like your paint job and the underside details jb

oh and his name is Ian McLagan, not "McLagen" http://www.ianmclagan.com/2014/9/7/macpiano73 just to keep the record straight. jb

any sarcasm was strictly in the mind(s) of the reader. I was just noting that anyone who really knows about Joe Cocker and his history beyond those couple sappy top 10 hits would have noted the passing of two giants (but often relegated to the sidelines) among musicians who passed immediately before him. and I am not sure how exactly Joe Cocker was "exploited" in a film and album whose band he was a willing participant and in fact a prime participant in all the sideshows that went along with it. can you clarify that please? jb

>Bullets are like candy, make sure to bring enough for everyone. A cop uses this for a signature? I think we have found the problem. Respect to the lost officers, it appears they were just a victim of their jobs, but police swaggering around like that .sig implies just makes me sick over the police state we have allowed this country to become. This isn't Iraq you know, and you aren't supposed to be bullying people which again is exactly what that .sig implies. it will get worse before it gets better if certain attitudes don't change. and I won't take back that chat. jb

well it may have been missed by such sophisticated music lovers as we have here but Mr Cocker was not the only luminary from that circle of people who passed away in the past couple of weeks. first there was Bobby Keys, sax player for Joe Cocker in a lot of his studio and touring bands, and at one time THE studio saxophone player to have on your session, also Keith Richards best friend (and they shared a birthdate (not just a birthday)) for many decades and a mainstay with the stones on stage since the seventies with a few intermissions here and there. first class sax player and someone with a love of rhythm and blues that greatly influenced the sound of the stones not to mention Joe Cocker and particularly with Leon Russell in Mad Dogs and Englishmen band in the early 70s. second mention would be Ian "Mac" McLagan who began with the Small Faces, went with it when they became the Faces, then played keyboards on record and stage with a whole litany of English bands starting again with the Rolling Stones but including pretty much everyone else including guest spots with David Lindleys reformed El Rayo X. He lived in Austin Tx and helped improve the already bustling local music scene immensely while also sheparding a number of major projects like the compilation of Faces tracks released on four CDs "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar" a few years ago. he was also a fellow player with most of the Beatles and most of the stones on solo projects, just like Mr Keys was and in fact they often played together on stage and off. I had met Mac a number of times in a number of different situations and he was always this totally humble person, you would never guess he had the credential he did. somehow it seems fitting that all these guys leave here more or less at the same time, problem is, who might be next? you just really never know. jb

perhaps unfortunately I just ordered a HRM Porsche 914/6 GT transkit from them (they were somewhat recommended or at least cited as a place to buy the kit), then I remembered this thread, THEN I took time to actually read this thread. I believe I paid with paypal and actually have paid for the item. hopefully I will see it sooner than later though this thread is not very encouraging. I will report back with progress if and when any is made jb

Resin Mini kits (BMC not BMW!)
jbwelda replied to Paul H's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
ScaleKraft Broadspeed mini: I will always kick myself for not buying more when they were available. I had an order sheet filled out and everything. as it was I got 4 or 5 nice transkits from him jb -
well the ignition wires might be going to the wrong place, but they sure look good going to there! excellent work and nice detailing. jb

Air-Trax Resin Saab 96

>did the vw cylinder photo etch project ever get into production? see the thread on the vw type 1 engine, but in a nutshell, have lost contact with Gio the guy who does them. and they are for the Porsche quad cam engine not a VW engine. I am hoping something comes of them because I basically have them all sold as soon as they would arrive. jb -
a couple of things: the guy might have had insurance, and even if the car is a "total" that doesn't mean there aren't salvageable parts there, like that engine and stuff. so its not like he totally lost out. think of the rat rod he can build for his next drive. so it was only an hour, but WHAT AN HOUR! jb
-
I don't know but I seem to have totally lost contact with Gio on the photoetch cylinders for the Porsche engine. have sent a couple emails and hopefully I will hear back because I do want to get on with these things. jb

those partsbox ones are nice and they come in some extreme drops. I think I recall they are wire reinforced too which is good if you have ever seen a resin axle droop over time. jb

I have a type three VW Karmann Ghia from them that I hope to start up on soon. very nice piece and even came with cast metal bumpers. I figure it will be a challenge but should be a fun challenge, and test fitting to a Tamiya ghia chassis looks promising. will probably put a quad cam Porsche engine in it, pancaked. jb -
looks like it is coming along well. for your cabin spacing I would try to tape together the whole cabin including the doors, lined up and square, as well as you can, then putting it in place on the fenders and feeding some glue into the areas you want to be stationary (eg: not the doors), let it dry up a bit and then remove the doors and you should have a cavity that fits them. jb

as for that Putin guy, I was always more partial to Marx/Lennon myself jb

>Are those the AMT(?) early Halibrand kidney beans on lo-pro tires? could be, dug em out of the parts box for some future build...might look good on this. don't know on the color scheme yet, probably something simple though. and I might attempt a scratchbuilt fold back canvas top. roof rack for surfboards for sure though. jb

nice start...that motor is gonna rip that tin can apart! jb
