too many pots on the stove so to speak harry... thanks for tuning in though...I do hope to make some significant progress this winter, starting with getting a body together and then fitting a chassis under it. jb

Unusual auto-kit 904... what is it?
jbwelda replied to aurfalien's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I always wondered whether this kit you are getting shared anything with the monogram 904...and wasn't there also an Aurora 904 or maybe it was a 908? be interesting to know of any similarities. jb -
also, you know the brand name Tamiya. buy their spray can paint. you will not regret it. I do agree though that you could do a decent job with a brush, either by applying it incredibly smoothly somehow, or more likely, by building up a good thickness of paint and then using sand paper on down into an abrasive polishing kit. but its going to be a lot of work and very hard to do in the corners and other tight places. like Bill above says: spray it. jb

that 1/24 offy is a resin kit from etzel speed classics, out of production for a while but now back and apparently available. nice little engine kit. jb

thanks guys. Bob, there are workbench and under glass threads on that earlier car, but for some reason it looks like the photos are not being found. looks like my photo host is down maybe that's why the threads don't have any photos...might try looking here: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18339&hl=offy once the host comes back up I will post a pic of the car here. thanks again for looking! edit: ok my photo host is back up and i think that link above should contain photos, but heres a couple for reference: jb

Unusual auto-kit 904... what is it?
jbwelda replied to aurfalien's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have seen those before; quite a lot of work if I recall correctly. I think it is all white metal and quite flashy (not in a good way). should be fun, maybe get a quad cam motor from the fujimi enthusiasts 356 kit? jb -
quick build to while away the time, chassis near completion but body just begun. will be building the early prototype with the cut off pods with antenna sticking from them. also deviating from the color scheme of the original: black interior with candy red exterior. Custom accessorized Corvair engine, the exhaust system promises to be a pain to get right and lots of sink marks and parting seams in the chrome frame to keep it interesting. again if you are expecting perfection, kindly look elsewhere. you can see the modified antenna pod in this shot, has to be molded into body: wheels and tires, wheels and front tires from kit, rear tires are AMT parts pack red line slicks which I found out BARELY fit on with the side mounted fuel tank...dodged a bullet there but just inadvertently: alright jb

here is something I have been working on for a couple years now: TDR Innovations Offy motor that will eventually find its way into a Big T based salt flat racer much like the 1/24 one I did some years ago. Similar but not exact, I may end up mounting the engine in the rear and having the pilot stick out of the cowl area...we will see. this promises to be a very long term project so don't expect updates very often...its a back burner. but for now I have the TDR Ford 4 speed trans pretty much completed and the motor itself is nearly finished from the cylinder head on down, still a lot to do. this is not an especially easy project, or cheap: the hardware alone is running nearly a hundred bucks and the casting on the motor was very very rough. everyone knows an offy motor was pretty much polished metal but no way I was bringing this resin casting near to the state that it could be bare machined metal, so I chose hot rod red for the block and am doing the remainder of it in various metalizers. heres a look at what I got so far...the chassis and body building will commence sometime this winter probably. meanwhile I am possibly going to use a pair of Weber carbs instead of the fuel injection, but final decision remains to be made after the cam covers and ignition wiring are added and the upper louvered covers done and in place (40 bolt heads per...into a very tiny space, that should be fun! SCTA tag I made to cover an oops (this resin looks hardy but don't push it!): ford 4 speed next to motor: and set in place: since its taken nearly two years to get to this point (maybe longer, I forget), I don't expect to have this done anytime soon...though the hard part is probably mostly done, that would be the prepping, sanding and filling of the motor itself. still some imperfections but most will be not very noticeable in the final product. I hope that doesn't make someone think I should never show it or something lame like that (boy some of these threads on this site are really something) and if you do think that, well, maybe you shouldn't look at this any more. jb

Corvette Grand Sport induction setup
jbwelda replied to om617's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I got a bunch cheap from AM at one point where they sold off a ton. possibly for capital to invest in another mold jb -
>I mustard mitt are you using some kind of translation program? or was that just wit? Because it was pretty witty, if only inadvertently. carry on jb

Corvette Grand Sport induction setup
jbwelda replied to om617's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
actually I believe the Revell and the AM kits are all from the AM run of the kits...didn't Revell just buy a warehouse full and they are reboxing them? and I believe once they are gone they may well be gone for good? though the molds have to be somewhere I suppose... jb -
not really moot as even if he has shut down there will be plenty out there on ebay etc. as to the quality, I guess I am getting spoiled by Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland and certain other resin casters. jb

1/8 scale offenhauser powered T: model of my friends 41 Willys pickup: Roth Road Agent: then hope to get further into Trabant Universal surf wagon, a type 3 Karmann Ghia full detail, a couple of hot rods, at least one of which using the Revell Orange Crate body and a reps and mins of Maryland full tilt flattie, a few Japanese mini race cars...got plenty to keep me going. jb

I have always wondered about these engine kits. I have seen a couple in person at the NNL and had the same question: people really pay this kind of money for this bag of resin? I could see pinholes, some big enough to obliterate entire corners of the block. flash that buried what appeared to be the parts. I thought it was just expected that you would put that much work in to make them look like the photos. seemed like way too much work for what you had to pay, to me. plus they looked too large to me too...like maybe 1/22 instead of 24 or 25th. jb

I explained above how I usually approach a build, but I don't build customs or vehicles that require heavy body mods. if I did though I am pretty sure I would do the body first, at least to make sure the build looks as good as I visualize in my head, before devoting a bunch of time to the rest of the build. and I can see the point of a flat black undercarriage. its basically saying "this doesn't exist and its only here to support the part that matters". I can dig it. in fact I kind of like "ghost" stuff like that and have even left plastic bare plastic color (usually white) to represent the detailed part that could or would be there. basically a place holder sort of thing. probably no one viewing it gets it or even realizes it, but that's totally ok by me. jb

Up for grabs... The 1963 Batmobile!
jbwelda replied to Custom Hearse's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
that windshield needs to be cut down some and either those photos are distorted or it needs a few more inches added to its track. as is it looks too much like a kiddie car to me. jb -
well you certainly got me beat! jb

I try to get the chassis up on wheels and of the proper stance, alongside building and detailing the engine and trans. then usually the interior along with body prep and kind of finally, the body and paint. then the challenge is to fit it all together and frequent test fitting helps, but I often find last minute crisis of one sort or another. no matter how much test fitting I do, I know its going to require finessing when it comes to final assembly jb

model kit subscriptions
jbwelda replied to bobthehobbyguy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
why would you want to subscribe to a series of unknown to you kits? I would much rather just buy what interested me as they came out. its not like they are exclusive or anything. (edit to add: plus you know the postage would kill you. there used to be a record "club" like this and you received a record each month that you were obliged to either buy (at list plus excessive postage "and handling" cost) or return, at your own cost for postage. turned out to be a major hassle and the records they sent rarely matched anyones interest. might turn out the same with a "model club" like that. just sayin'. end edit) to the true topic of the thread though (wow that's 7 words beginning in "t" out of 8!): what I would worry about with these kits is whether the manufacturer is still going to be around when it comes to supplying all the parts. things could look rosy now with expectations of lots of sales but then they taper off and the company goes bankrupt. what then? you have a considerable investment sitting there that's going to require an awful lot of scratchbuilding to complete. I would like to see someone subscribe and then start up a continuing thread maybe in on the workbench forum, detailing what he gets and how it goes together. I think it would be a very interesting and long running thread especially if the author really kept at it as new installments arrived. it could be a great marketing concept, depending on execution. jb -
>and of course we all carry lighter fluid when we're "out on the trail" its in my "recovery equipment" box in the back of my truck. been stuck in the desert with two tires off their rims and only one spare more than once...learned that lesson along with how to reset a bead a long ways from anywhere, a long time ago. that's often what happens when you deflate down to 8 psi to crawl up over rocks and other hazards. ps: don't try that with passenger car tires or you will ruin your tires, rims and your whole day. there is a reason for light truck tires on 4WD vehicles that are actually being used beyond carrying mom to the mall. jb

Revell Ag Trabant 601S Universal "25 Jahre Mauerfall"
jbwelda replied to GeeBee's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
oh I didn't realize there was a predecessor to it. makes sense then. jb -
hmmm maybe I need to go back and revisit this. and by the way, I know my revells from my tamiyas. it would be nice if I can get the chassis up in there higher but for some reason I think I tried that and the interior would need sectioning. also those big dumb wheels should have been ashcanned but they kinda match the wheels on my 1:1. and if I remember right I believe I did lower this some by sliding the wheels upwards on their mount point to the suspension arms. don't mean to hijack your thread but this info might help you on your build. its looking better every post. by the way I believe this was the kit version (yours I mean, the Eunos) with the hardtop. very nicely done piece too, and fits right on the roadster kit (no surprise, same body). jb

Revell Ed Roth 57 Bel Air - Suddenly It's 1963!
jbwelda replied to Karl LaFong's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
that's a great idea and it makes me want to do exactly as above: get the snapper and a decal set and round out my roth collection without the aggro of that full 57 kit edit: oops sorry this is what I was referencing: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=95721 jb -
Revell Ag Trabant 601S Universal "25 Jahre Mauerfall"
jbwelda replied to GeeBee's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
so looks like reissue of newly issued kit with addition of wild decals? that would be kool but not enough for me to buy another kit. still its a great little kit and the motor is a little jewel. jb -
prank? its not a prank. its a method to reseat a tire bead when you are miles away from a tire machine. put lighter fluid (or more often, engine starter fluid) in and on the tire and set it off with a match. poof the tire bead is back on the rim. jb
