I have got to start building some of these
jbwelda replied to Pete J.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
you DO realize this has nothing to do with putting anything together...those are pieces mounted in a framed display meant to be displayed on the wall or similar. its like an exploded diagram in 3D. jb -
thanks folks, dang photographs make it obvious I need to polish out that black and reduce the orange peel you can't even really see in real life! (yeah I bet you can though!) jb

removed the masking from the windows to reveal remarkably clean lines! posed on chassis with front wheels posed. will be trimming off that front bumper support to let the body slide down about another 3/16" in front. single rear fat tire looks pretty neat! thanks again for looking and commenting! ps to add: those big holes in the side are for the headlamps, didn't like the stock ones so substituted Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland resin louvered hot rod buckets. they look too kool. will probably be in the next photos I post. jb

Tamiya Europa twin cam (repurposed): here are the gunze twin cam (going in) with the Escort BDR (going out, on the stand). kind of hard to see, sorry bout that the all make very kool powerplants. jb

that body is going to take some doing to get free from those support sprues! I don't think I would trust a nipper, I would probably use some photoetch razor saw xacto blades and then try to be strategic about where I cut and in what order. looks like a possibly eventful evening to me... jb

Revell 4th Quarter new kit announcements
jbwelda replied to Brett Barrow's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I had an 84 GTi and really liked it for awhile. at 50k miles, literally a day after the warranty expired, it started having problems: overheating, A/C giving out, CV joints making noise, etc, that I offed it and bought an Eagle Talon AWD Turbo. that was kinda a piece of junk too... but the GTi? definitely not a "loser hatch" in my book. it was pretty awesome in a high speed corner with the rear swinging out there and the front sticking on to its track. nothing beats front engine/rear drive though in my book. jb -

I am all eyes too! there was a stack of those clear view Escorts at the clearance store one time, I bought three as I recall but should have grabbed more. really nice minilite style wheels, that BDR motor is decent and lots of little race stuff and suspension etc. if you happen to need any of the Escort parts, let me know and maybe I can supply them. I have thoroughly pilfered the kits over the years but you never know. that elan twin cam motor is excellent too by the way and Mini-Exotics used to sell a resin or white metal version at one time if you don't want to loot your high-tech kit. don't know if they are still around but you see them on ebay time to time. jb

Resin leaching issue?......
jbwelda replied to NJJeff's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
if you could really and truly seal it off from any contact with air, it might arrest the problem. might being the key word. more likely it will act fine for a while, a few years maybe, but eventually it is going to show up again and/or the resin is going to get soft again. Unfortunately I don't think I would put any time into it at this point, anything you do is liable to get ruined later as it ages. Kind of a total waste probably. I am sure any reputable resin caster would replace it, or if that were not possible, refund your money or ask you to choose something else from their stock. jb -
Creating 1/24 scale Astroturf?
jbwelda replied to DrGlueblob's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
this kit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FUJIMI-1-24-HONDA-ODYSSEY-w-TREK-8000-BIKE-PLASTIC-CAR-KIT-RA1-RA3-JDM-/231280046601?pt=Model_Kit_US&hash=item35d95d7209 contains, along with two separate Thule luggage carriers, and a scale Trek 8000 mountain bike and carrier, a sheet of astroturf, more or less in scale, on which to display the MomBomb. pretty good price too, like I said beautiful accessories usable in many applications. jb -
oh one thing, you probably know more about this than I do, but I don't think you should polish on that metallic/metalflake paint. Won't it cause it to dull out the metallic sparkle? I think I would clear it first and then polish out the clear. like I said you probably know more about paint than I do so if so, carry on. sure looks beautiful so far, almost like it doesn't need any clear! jb

NICE color! jb

since you are using a galaxie trailer you should enter this into the MCM special contest. I don't know the details offhand but it could be coming due sometime soon jb

Creating 1/24 scale Astroturf?

actually regular flocking, painted a shocking green, and maybe suspended in white glue, would come pretty darn close. if you scaled it up its as big as a piece of healthy grass. jb -
Datsun 510s
jbwelda replied to Austin T's topic in 1:1 Reference Photos: Auto Shows, Personal vehicles (Cars and Trucks)
I remember renting 210s in Kauai back in the eighties and driving them sideways down cane field roads out to NaPali. never once left us stranded or stuck but we sure drove em like we rented em. fun times jb -
Revell 4th Quarter new kit announcements
jbwelda replied to Brett Barrow's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I would like to know what "figures" are included in the Surfite and in the Showboat. Ed Roth & Tommy Ivo? (kinda obvious but you never know). I wish they had PREPAINTED figures in them like the carroll Shelby figure in one or another Shelby car. jb -
Steve Magnante's built model on eBay
jbwelda replied to FASTBACK340's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hey Greg, is that the model up for bid that the thread concerns? Who cares "what else he has done" when the subject is a model up for sale on ebay? jb -
Steve Magnante's built model on eBay
jbwelda replied to FASTBACK340's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
the thing is, when you really look at it close, there isn't much there worth more than the price of the original kit. for instance, look at the photo of the engine compartment. no exhaust headers at all, then look at the pic of the undercarriage. the pipes sticking out the front wheel wells are just glued up onto the fenders. that's fine for a design concept but for sale and expecting 50+ dollars? that along with a lot of other things one can see on close examination of the photos makes me glad his reserve is greater than my bid. yeah a "name" is worth something I suppose... one other thing: is this the supposedly "unbuildable" Revell 57 Chevy? if so at least he managed to get it together. I don't know that much about these kits so perhaps I am confused. jb -
so this is basically an unassembled diecast possibly along the detail level of say CMC, prepainted, that you subscribe to and pay payments for the parts you get. and it ends up costing over a thousand bucks? hmmm...that's pretty stiff. maybe if it were a birdcage but we all have our holy grails jb

I personally don't mind if I leave off valvestems, but I do put them in at least half the time. I usually see a lot of things I should have done...after the car is done and getting photographed. Its then I notice that darn ejector pin mark or something. personally I am guilty of every one of the things Bill above mentions, just not all on the same model. and usually I didn't notice how apparent it was until after the thing was together...and the macro lense indeed does not lie. jb

jbwelda replied to FASTBACK340's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
well I put in a bid but unfortunately less than the reserve. my guess now is he wants at least a hundred for it. with three days to go he will probably get it. and yeah skip its pretty funny until you play that game and guess incorrectly what the reserve is...then you're stuck with it unless someone outbids you! jb
