Help picking my sun his first glue kit
Billy Kingsley replied to Mal.au's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Mal, I would start him off with one of AMT's classic, wire axle type kits. Simple in construction but looks right when done, it's what I started on and it's still one of, if not the, favorite style kit of mine to work on. If you have Wal-marts down there, don't know, they usually have some prepainted for cheap. Problem is, sometimes the chassis/interior parts are warped because they are wrapped with tape so tightly! Not all though. Good luck to both of you! -
Welcome to the board Andy! The red one on the bottom is my favorite...cool!

Thanks Rex, I will contact him! -
I actually had the Mike Bliss car done about three weeks ago, but I needed to do the tire decals, and then I've been waiting for the sun to come out...I believe the last time it made an appearence here was 1988. Feels like it, anyway! Since I finished that one first, I will post it first. Basic almost box stock Revell 03-05 Monte, with the ignition boxes moved to the top of the dash. Decals come from my friend John Barker and the contingencys from JWTBM and Cherry Run decals. And the Ernie Irvan car. Totally box stock build from the Kodak Olds combo, I completed the Rick Wilson car from it a few weeks ago. Just another car in my line of Kodak cars, I have a few more coming too. This is the second NASCAR that I spray painted the chassis on, the first was the Wilson car. I used the kit decals (the rear stripe was a pain in the butt, too) and I brush painted the grill work and the C pillars, as the decals would just not work for those areas. Cherry Run decals also provided the Busch, Winston and NASCAR logos too. This is the second Ernie Irvan car I've done. I also did his #56 Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet Dealership sponsored Aerocoupe last year. The first two and the last one picture are the most accurate color wise. Had some cloud issues. But it was actually sunny for just a few minutes and I had to take what I could get!

a non nascar build up

Very cool Paul! One of my all time favorite vehicles. (as you can tell by my email address!) -
As always, had a really fun night. Loads of work for me this time, but that was after we got home...more on that later in the post! Two guys brought their cool 1:1 rides... Sal DiMiceli's Galaxie (PS He's looking for that hood in scale so he can replicate his car...any help, let me know!) and Sam Favata brought his Corvette Mike Obermeyer brought this neat Chevy S10 A pair of Police vehicles, from Tom Sheehy (ford) and Doc Wiseman (chevy) with Doc's H-M hauler in the background. Sal brought some of his old drag racers to the meeting too. He says these are older then me, at least 30 years old and he brought them in because I kept mentioning that I had never seen any of his work Matt Trotta made a rare appearence and brought VW Dave with him. I had previously agreed to buy Matt's NASCAR collection, and it filled the back of the Jeep! There are three rows of assorted NASCAR kits in there, and later tonight I get the fun of entering them into my collection spread sheets The work involved was carrying them from the Jeep, up the stairs and into my room! Then cleaning them off my bed. Lots of fun though! This picture was taken with the regular setting at night. Surprisingly it came out pretty good! Matt had 4 of his cool creations on the table And VW Dave brought down 5 of his (4 pictured) and his wife Jen's Mini Cooper. It was his first meeting, and it better not be his last as I gave him a magnet that we made up! I made up little TNMCC logo magnets and gave one to everybody, in part because they are cool, but mostly because they were celebrating my mom's graduation from College. Which I forgot to tell everybody. Luckily, I can put it in the newsletter!

Kudos to Gregg and Jairus!

Hmm, I've not been to the shop in over a month, I guess I will have to go and get the new issue now! -
Ok...Here it is. I've been working on this one for three months now, almost non stop. There are currently 23 scratchbuilt items on it, and there will likely be more by time I am done. It also includes my first scratchbuilt hinge, ever. I started out with the basic body from the newer issue of the kit, and worked from there. I worked on it for almost a month before I decided that I would be doing Marty Robbins' car with it, and the original plan was to do Fred Lorenzen's #28...but I decided I liked Marty better. Sorry Fred Fans! I am doing the car on the right in this picture. Ok...Picture time. The first picture I took, it's a preliminary stage. You can see I've already scratchbuilt a a fuel filler, filled the marker lights and factory stock gas cap, and opened the trunk. I decided to open it AFTER the wing was glued on. Not easy! I have also sanded the molded hood pins off, to be replaced, at the correct location, by JWTBM chrome decal hood pins. My first attempt at a new interior trunk. I used sheet brass. WHY, I don't know. I have since ripped that out, and replaced it with plastic stock. A check on AeroWarriors showed me that while not quite the same, it was close enough in scale that a Modern Motorsports fuel cell would work. Not so Modern anymore! Luckily, the Brass didn't stick to anything, nor did anything stick to it, so I was able to remove the MM resin piece and it from the chassis with ease, even though I had super glued it. The preliminary (and basically complete) interior. I started with the roll cage from the basic kit, and worked up from there. I made the two hoops that go down behind the A pillar and the cross bar that connects them, and I made the bar that connects the cross bar to the floor. I tried to make door bars, but I didn't remember them until after the hoops were in, and by then it was too late. So, they will be for the next one. I know the hoops should go down into the floor area under the bulkhead, but I lifted up the car and looked at it from all angles and you really can't see them after where they stop unless you hold it up over your head, so I left them as is. I intend to scratch build the bars you'd see in the trunk, though. Havn't yet. A closeup of the fuel filler. I discovered that the little tab of excess sprue on the front spoiler is the perfect size for the fuel filler, when modified to the correct shape anyway. This will be painted after the car, with a brush. I do plan to add the proper hoses in the interior, too. The engine. I built the engine factory stock, which I am sure is wrong. I am thinking about building another engine (I have 9 of these Daytonas, so I have spares, plus my first Daytona was engineless). I just don't know what a NASCAR engine would look like. I may just scratchbuild some bars for the engine bay and call it a day, the rear of the car is the centerpiece with the hinged trunk! The engine is not done here, or yet, even though I took this photo in mid April. A very poor shot of the hinge. I used real Sterling Silver, as I had some on hand because my mom makes earrings and other jewlery and bought the wrong gauge wire by mistake, which I quicky confiscated. Also note the coat hanger, it's recieved it's first primer now, but I need to do a bit more filling and sanding before it can see paint. Ready for primer, with the trunk open. NOTE: The Jelly Bean box is where I store my excess and parts of NASCAR decals. This is an open.... ...and shut kind of build! Here's the interior now, with the new trunk floor and some more bracing in it. I also filled the speakers on the package shelf, at least, I think they were speakers. They are filled now, either way. A closeup of the trunkial area. No, the parts aren't floating in space, I use clear plastic for scratchbuilding. You can see that I have drilled out the hole for the eventual fuel lines. And that's where she sits now. Body is primered and is waiting some more putty and then, as usual, more sanding. Some of my putty work from a few months ago was rather sub par and there are some gouges from overzealous sanding that have to be puttied, too. It's kind of obvious that I am concentrating on the top side of the car...Detailing the bottom of a car holds NO interest for me, flat black is fine. And, I don't want to use up all my detailing on one build I have about 4 more of these that I want to do the same way and in short order.

The easist thing for me is to flip the front spindles. That works good for some kits and not so good for others. In the back, you can make lowering blocks by adding styrene to the mounting point of the axle...hard to explain, and I didn't fully understand it until I did my Galaxie Limited Sedan Delivery Basically, it shifts the axle up. On kits where the axles mount on the springs, simply remove a coil. Anything more complicated is beyond what I've done so far!

Billy Kingsley replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
That's also looking fine Bill!! Modelhaus products can be very addictive can't they? After I finished my Tucker, I wanted to get on their website and order one of everything they offer! Maybe someday over the cource of years I'll actually be able to collect them all...Maybe! For now, I need to order me a 61 DeSoto and bathtub Nash... -
Finished: Galaxie Limited 47 Chevy Sedan Delivery
Billy Kingsley replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thanks so much guys!!! It is really appreciated!! I hope to take a better interior shot tomorrow, minus the hair and dust...provided it's sunny... -
This is, perhaps, my best effort ever. Finished earlier today, this is my build of the Galaxie Limited 1947 Sedan Delivery. It's a mild custom, although the kit is entirely box stock. The paint is MML Phoenican Yellow and Bright Platinum Metallic (a Ford and Plymouth color on a Chevy, LOL) covered by a coat of MML clear. This is really a great part, and I have plans for at least one more Sedan Delivery and one Aerosedan. I can't afford them currently, but I will soon. I plan to make the second Sedan Delivery a phantom El Camino like hauler...Yes, I'm going to attempt a major body conversion!! I will fix the two problems with this kit when I do that: The hood is not long enough (I suspect that is due to being made primarily for the Aerosedan, the rest of the kit is too high quality to have a mistake like that, and also the exhaust pipe doesn't quite reach the part it's supposed to (manifold? I know NOTHING about engines!) but that will be a very simple scratchbuilding as it's just a straight pipe. Other then that, this is one of the most well made kits I have ever built. It's also the 200th model I have ever built...All since November 7th, 1999. That's a lot of building! (18th completion of 2006) Anyway, enjoy the pictures. There are a bunch of them, and I am not going to post them all. You'll have to visit the album to see them! Also, remember there are no lines on the hood. I masked that completly by eye, and I would say it came out pretty good! I love this shot. You can see the camera reflecting in the wheel, and it shows the wheel detail nicely too! http://public.fotki.com/ElCaminoBilly/indi...ysedandelivery/

1955 Ford Fairlane WIP (Update 5/29/06)
Billy Kingsley replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
So..........................................Who wants to start placing bets on how many awards this one will win? In reality, that is looking fine Bill...Not like anything else could ever happen.... -
I say: MML Ultraviolet Pearl with MML Royal Blue Metallic. That's what I would do. But, I have a hard time not painting EVERY street Rod that purple.
-
Very cool build, Bill. Love the numbers they look to accurately represent that kind of print quite nicely!

Gregg did you get the Cordoba yet? Man, that's one NASTY kit. I got one because we had a 78 for a while, I planned to replicate it...decided not to when I saw the kit!!! Good luck!
