What parts would those be? Steve
-
Yes. Drilling one of them out was just an experiment. I have several sets of the very nice Fireball Modelworks GM Door handles that I really planned on using from the onset. I just wanted to try drilling them out. Seems it might be a viable option for some project down the road. Steve

Pretty sure I have some of those wheel covers laying around somewhere myself. Don't remember having any red center though. Personally, I always thought these wheel covers were as ugly as sin!! Steve

Cheap Tip- Scribing For Added Realism
StevenGuthmiller replied to Casey's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I've been doing quite a bit more scribing recently as well. Not only body panels and a little on trim, but considerably more on interiors. Being as I build a lot of vintage annuals, there are a lot of opportunities to bring out the details with some additional scribing. Most notably, I've begun scribing pleats in door panel upholstery to help accentuate what is normally otherwise quite faint. Steve -
Anybody have some insight as to what kind of finish the chassis on a '68 Old 442 would have had from the factory? Red primer, gray primer, paint over spray, etc? Thanks! Steve
-
Thanks guys. I hope to get some more work done on it this week.......when I'm not dealing with a car that the starter has apparently taken a dump on! Steve
-
I suppose that is correct. This kit, whether the MPC or AMT version, was never a true annual. I'm not sure when this kit was first produced, but it was under the MPC moniker. The "annual" '69 Olds 442 was produced by Johan I believe. Steve
-
I rarely catch everything that I would like to do in time, but this detail just happened to jump out at me this time around. Steve
-
Exactly the same kit. It has been re-badged as an AMT kit in recent years by Round 2, but it was originally produced by MPC. The kit I'm pilfering is of the MPC variety. Steve
-
That is absolutely true! I guess sometimes people don't want to read the posted material. But it can get pretty repetitive. Steve

What Did You Have for Dinner?
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Some photos from our New Orleans dinner party. New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp. Sausage and Crawfish Gumbo. Red Jambalaya. Dark Chocolate Layer Cake. Steve -
Yes, it will be a W-30, and yes, the wheel wells will be painted red. I'm basically using all of the guts from the MPC '69 W-30 kit. Steve

I managed to find a little time at the bench today while I tried to distract myself from the terrible first half that the Minnesota Vikings played!! I finished boxing in the frame rails and added some fender well and firewall wiring and plumbing. If I'm not careful, I might have to start doing some painting soon! Steve

Saw the new "Midway" movie yesterday
StevenGuthmiller replied to Mike999's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Strangely enough, there seems to be 3 movies just being released that might actually be worth the price of a theater ticket. "Midway", "Ford vs Ferrari", and the most recent, "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood". Not that I'm a huge Mr Rogers fan, but I figure that pretty much everything that Tom Hanks touches is gold! Likewise, I'm not particularly interested in the whole Ford versus Ferrari racing war thing, but with Matt Damon and Christian Bale..........well, how can you go wrong? Steve -
'69 Impala SS
StevenGuthmiller replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I remember when I was young, there were 2 old ladies, (I believe they were sisters) that lived across the alley from my parents house. When we first moved there in 1968 the "sisters" owned a beautiful maroon 1950 Buick 2 door hard top. It looked like a brand new car! Shortly after we moved in, they traded the Buick for a gold '69 Impala 2 hard top with a white vinyl top. ( I don't recall the interior color) They owned that car until about 1984 when they traded it in on some homely blue Buick skylark or something. ( I pretty much stopped paying attention to cars after about 1973) That Impala looked as good the day that they traded it as the day they bought it! They very rarely drove it, and when they did, it was at about 10 mph around a small town of less than 3.000 people. I remember seeing it one day shortly before they traded it and watched the black smoke bellow from the dual exhaust! I'm pretty certain that car never reached speeds over 35 mph and I suppose that it was so carboned up that it was probably their rational for trading it. Someone got a nearly pristine '69 Impala that likely was very low mileage when they traded that. If you could get the carbon out of it, it probably would have been like a brand new car. Steve -
The base of the dual snorkel air cleaner will be black. The lid will be chrome with an "Oldsmobile 442" decal. My new best friend Bob Spedding was good enough to make the decals for me. Can't wait to show them off! Steve

any caster make these??
StevenGuthmiller replied to thatz4u's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Okay. Didn't know that. Steve -
Not to be too much of a pain in the back side Thomas, but the area where the vents are should be painted black, and the entire windshield plate where the wipers are should be all chrome. Just thought that information might be helpful. Steve

I like to look at as many photos as possible, and anything that jumps out at me that looks as if it is something that I can manage to do to enhance the appearance under the hood, I will at least contemplate trying. Steve

??????? Don stopped doing business months ago. Steve -
I guarantee you that this will be another of a long line of rules ignored and unenforced. The EPA doesn't have the same power today that they did in 2015. Without getting too political, I think we all know why. Steve

What Did You Have for Dinner?
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
The wife and I will be hosting a few friends and work colleagues for dinner this Saturday. Wednesday and Thursday are my days off during the week so I am getting a jump start on as many things as I can, so I can spend some time with our guests on the day of the party, and not all of my time in the kitchen. Our theme is going to be "A Trip to New Orleans". No, I'm not a Creole or Cajun chef, but I have a few recipes that my family and I enjoy a lot. Most were modified from other recipes discovered along the line. The Menu will be as follows. Redwood Room Salad: This is not a New Orleans dish, but it is a facsimile of my favorite salad stolen from my wife's favorite restaurant when we lived in Rochester Minnesota. A simple spinach salad with red onion, sunflower seeds, bacon and blue cheese with a spicy Asian sesame dressing. I got the dressing made and the bacon cooked. Next is New Orleans Style BBQ Shrimp: I actually had to order the shrimp from an online store in Louisiana in order to get the head on shrimp that this recipe requires. I really love this recipe! It's one of my top five favorite dishes of all time and the whole shrimp are crucial. A simple dish of head on shrimp with creole seasoning, Worcestershire sauce, lots of black pepper and a ton of butter! Five pounds of U-10 shrimp was the smallest amount that I could order, but at about $6.80 per lb, it was a pretty good deal. Even after adding shipping, which wasn't cheap, it was less than $11.00 per lb. Soup course will be Sausage and Crawfish Gumbo. I've made this dish many times over the years because my kids love it! Normally I use sausage, chicken and shrimp for this dish, but decided to change it up a bit this time and use crawfish and sausage. I ordered some Andouille sausage from the Louisiana store as well. Decent Louisiana style sausage is difficult, if not impossible, to find around here. So far I have only prepared a "chocolate" roux for the gumbo, but I plan on nearly completing the dish today to be re-heated and finished on Saturday. This is one of those dishes that actually tastes better leftover. The leftover bacon fat from the salad crumbles was used as the fat for the roux. Main course will be Creole, (Red) Jambalaya. I haven't made this in some time, so I hope it goes well. The last recipe I used was quite involved and was a real all day affair. This recipe is a bit simpler, but I did substitute ham stock for the chicken stock that the recipe calls for. I really like the smoky background that you get with the ham. This will have andouille sausage, chicken thighs, ham hock and shrimp. So far, I have the ham stock completed. Dessert will be a dark chocolate layer cake that I have made many times. The icing contains 18 oz. of semi sweet chocolate, a cup of cocoa powder and 3 sticks of butter, so how can you go wrong?! Steve -
I will likely just leave the wipers that are already present. I can't see spending a lot of extra money just for a set of wipers. These examples are not terrible anyway. Steve
