Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take
Snake45 replied to MrObsessive's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
It was always an AMT tool, reworked from the midyear-introduced '68 kit. MPC didn't do a Chevelle that year at all. -

No one wants you to. Good luck with finishing it in 2019, then! -
"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!

And don't forget to sand those tire treads! YOU GO BOYEEEEE! GITTER DONE! I"m also looking to wrap up my '40 Ford tomorrow, The Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise! -
I'd say start with an easy, no-drama kit. They DO exist. Figure out a few subjects you're interested in, then come on here and ask us about what kits of these subjects would be the best to start on. Don't be afraid to start with a "snapper" kit. Some of today's are quite good, and will let you practice getting a good finish without bogging you down with engine or chassis details (which can be tedious). Here's the tools I use most often and consider essential: Xacto knife (or similar), razor saw (for cutting parts off trees), a few small files, a 10" single cut flat bastard mill file, 3M Wetordry sandpaper (ask for it by name) in #320, #400, and #600 grits, Silver Sharpie for chrome trim. And of course a few paintbrushes and some basic paints--flat black, semigloss black, chrome silver, flat aluminum, flat steel, Stop Light Red and Turn Signal Amber. The specific project will dictate what other paints you'll need. Learn to "seek and destroy" all molding lines and edge flash. If you can do that, you'll actually be ahead of quite a few "intermediate" modelers here. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Very cool! So if you want a full detail 2010 Mustang convertible, everything you need is available. On this one I'd me more inclined to go the other way--I'd buy both, put the fastback on the snapper chassis, and see if I could swap the convertible body/interior and full detail chassis to someone who wanted to build THAT combination. Not that I have enough interest in modeling a 2010 Mustang to actually do this--I have a couple diecasts that scratch my modern Mustang itch just fine.

I'm kinda thinking of doing a series of models showing the progression from FX to Pro Stock, told through four racers--one Chevy, one Plymouth, one Dodge, one Ford. Jenkins, S&M and Landy are naturals for the first three. Having trouble coming up with a good candidate for the Ford. Closest I can come up with is Nicholson, who of course is mostly associated with Mercury. But didn't he run a '68 CJ Mustang in SS, and then a Maverick in Pro Stock? I see there's a new book out on his cars. I'll have to get it. (I have the books on the other three.)
-
Cool! Do they have a full-detail kit that can be used to upgrade it? (I'm not that sharp on newer stuff.)
-
Thanks. Your turn signals are so well done I didn't think they could possibly be the AMT kit, and some of the front fender contouring looked Revell to me too. But from the windshield frame back it looked AMT (and of course the wheels are). Nice model!

The Missile kit's a hardtop, and Black Arrow was a sedan.

Great pics and writeup! Keep it coming!

We do this all the time. It's called kitbashing. Look in the promo chassis thread and you'll see several people talked about putting newer, better chassis under old kits. And Revell is selling plenty of nice snappers--some to younger modelers, some to serious modelers like us. I've built five or six of them and hope to build more. There's little reason for a modeler to convert their '69 Camaro or '57 Chevy snappers to full-detail, as good kits are available of those, but their '70 Chevelle and '63 Vettes are so good that they're worth kitbashing/upgrading. Several here have either done so or talked about it.
-
I think you missed my point. I'm not suggesting bodies only. I'm suggesting full snap (curbside) kits, which could be assembled out of the box OR used with a full kit for full detail. And for every X number of my snappers sold, you'll also sell a donor kit. I won't buy donor kits for every one, as I'm quite happy with curbsides. But I would want to full-detail a few of them.

Third? Who's having troops quartered in their homes? Did you mean Second?
-
Yeah, I know--just dug that out and re-read it. That and rereading the Grumpy's Toys books is what gave me the idea. Also thinking about maybe doing his Monster Mash '55 Chevy.
-
I thought of a few more that could be used on the chassis of existing Revell 1/25 kits: '57 Ranchero '57 Nomad '55 Chevy Sedan Delivery '61 Corvette '65 or '66 Corvette roadster with hard top (and BB hood for use with their '67 kits). '65 Chevelle SS, NON Z16 with accurate roof. And of course, would be a perfect way to bring a '69 Chevelle SS body to the new '68.
-
I'd buy it if it had an ALL NEW, ALL CORRECT body. Would probably buy several. How about a '69 Boss 429?
-
Kind of misses the point on my idea, which is (in part) to stimulate the sales of existing kits (tooling) by making exciting new bodies available for them. Not only would my new snappers sell, but maybe one in five of them would result in the sale of an existing kit that probably wouldn't have been bought except as a donor.
-
That's the one I'm looking for. IMHO it needs an American V8 and some fat tires on Torq-Thrusts. I do have a Heller Alfa Romeo Zagato on which I intend to inflict similar perversions. I know, I'm a bad person.

Revell 1968 Chevy Chevelle SS 396...........My take

I ordered the Schorr book on Amazon yesterday, and another one of his just to get free shipping. The Oldham book is great. He confesses to just pulling dragstrip times out of his rear end when "stuff happened" and they couldn't actually get to a strip to test the car. -
"Bring Out Your Dead" Completion Build--ROUND 2 Is On!

It looks fine, and you GOTTER DONE! I think you're our seventh completion--well done and model on! -
I've been looking for one of their (Monogram) Bugattis on there for some time, even a rebuildable glue bomb, and I haven't found an "affordable" one. I want to HOT ROD the thing. Yes, I am evil.
-
Okay, I'll bite. What Ford kits does Revell have in their catalog upon which they could base new '63-'67 Galaxie bodies?
-
My son is 29 and one of his life goals is to own a '69 Camaro or a C2 Corvette.
