Big Trucks, Spoked Wheels..
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to 10thumbs's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
After Christmas, I was going to order some tires for the 2 hole Budds that I got from you off of Ebay. Maybe I'll be ordering more than I thought. -
Big Trucks, Spoked Wheels..
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to 10thumbs's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
All of the rims are the same. The front rims and the inner rear rims are turned opposite of the outer rears. On the rear it is: rim turned in (a lip on the spoke stops it), then spacer, then rim turned out, all held on by the wedges. The wedges tighten against the rim that you see on the top of the upper photo. These have to be tightened evenly or the wheel will wobble. If you get behind a truck or bus with spokes and the duals are wobbling, then somebody probably tightened them up crooked. Oops I posted the same time KJ did, but same answer. -
Big Trucks, Spoked Wheels..
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to 10thumbs's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The way KJ described making his resin spoke wheels are like the 1:1 First: the rim is simply a rim: Second: the spoke center is on piece with wedges on each spoke to hold the rim: Third: a spacer is used on the rear to separate the duals: -

Real or Model - for old times sake FINISHED
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to peteski's topic in Real or Model? / Auto ID Quiz
It looks real, but based on the variation of the model kit compared to the pictures of the real thing that I have seen, I'm going to have to vote model, but a very GOOD one. -

Big Trucks, Spoked Wheels..
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to 10thumbs's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Keep in mind that although Dayton is one manufacturer of spoke wheels, that spoke wheels in general are often called "Daytons" (at least used to be)regardless of the manufacturer, much like 2 hole disc wheels are often called "Budds" regardless of manufacturer, or slip jaw piers are called "Channellocks" regardless of the manufacturer. Once you have found a photo of the type of wheels that you were hoping to use, if you don't have them, post the photo and someone can tell you the best place to source them from if you can't find them. -

Deciding whether to use 5 or 6 spoke also depends. Spoke wheels are like many other parts on class 8 trucks (engines, air dryers, seats, fifth wheels, etc.), there are many different brands. The Diamond Reo kit comes with 5 spoke front wheels. The last Diamond Reo that I built I used 6 spoke because these wheels were also offered. Some trucks like old Macks will have wheels that will usually only be found other Macks. Reference pictures that can be easily found on the internet are a good source to help you get the look that you desire for your model. -
359...Welderup style.
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to Petetrucker07's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Shape of the windshield looks more 379 to me. This would make a cool model, just not my thing in the 1:1 though. Of course I like odd stuff anyway. It would however make a good truck for a "Duel" next generation movie. -
Glasspack Mufflers `60-`70 vintage
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to 69NovaYenko's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
B.N.L Resin has them for $2.00 a pair plus shipping (Red Cherry Bomb style). I used to have some that were made out of aluminum, but I don't remember who they were made by. They were very nice though. You might watch Ebay for other options. -
The Duel Project
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to Stuntman Mike's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
The surviving "Duel" truck was used in a 1978 episode of the "Incredible Hulk" that was titled "Never Give an Trucker an Even Break" (which can be viewed on HULU). This included quite a few scenes from the original "Duel" movie, but there were several new scenes as well. There are several scenes inside the cab, including an inside view of the swamp cooler, and several more opportunities to look at the outside of the other truck. -

Very nice builds! I began building semi trucks before I was a teenager, but stopped building after I started driving. I'm glad I was able to return (twice now). You have some real skill, so even if you get away from model building for a few years, hang on to some of the builds you are building now, I wish that I would have kept mine. -

351 Peterbilt conversion
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to Old Buckaroo's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Very nice build! I could see this truck sitting on a Peterbilt lot in the early 70s ready to go to work! The wheels are excellent! (Where did you get them?), I really like the painted mirrors and Lubrifiner too. Top notch work on this one!! I hope to build a 281 or a 351 one day. I hope I can build one half as nice as this one. -
The Duel Project
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to Stuntman Mike's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Cool plan. Another build that I hoped to build one day, but will probably never get around to. Remember there were a couple of different trucks used in the movie that varied some. There used to be a website that belonged to someone who had purchased and restored an original "Duel" truck as well as an original "Rubber Duck" truck, but that website no longer works. It is a shame because there was a lot of useful information about both trucks on that website. If I'm remembering correctly the "hero truck" (main one that crashed) was a 281, while the truck used in the added scenes like the school bus scene was a 351. The "hero truck" had a horizontal breather from a piece of equipment, while the truck in the added scenes had a vertical one similar to the one in the kit, if I'm not mistaken. Both trucks had butterfly hoods. I'm probably telling you information that you already know, but since you said that you knew little about trucks, I thought that I would share what little information that I know. Hope this helps. I'm looking forward to seeing more of this build. Looking at your "Blue Mule", I'm sure this one will be good. -

Some Rubber Duck questions
DRIPTROIT 71 replied to Stuntman Mike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Spaulding Trading and Shipping sells an R700 hood from time to time. I don't know the quality or how it fits the AMT cab. I hope to get the A.I.T.M. kit myself one day. It looks nice!
