Where are the Model Trucks?
The Red Ranger replied to The Red Ranger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My sentiments exactly! I guess my point is this. Back in the day before there was a 32 ford, or a 57 chevy kit someone had to suggest that it'd be a smart idea to make them, right? Well did they say "No we will only keep doing what we know will sell". I mean my whole point is.... no one knows if modern trucks would sell or not because there hasn't been a single attempt. Why not try just ONE of these modern trucks and see the success. Is one new model really going to sink Revell? Is there ever a model that NEVER sells? So really, people can say all day long "They stick with what sells" but that means nothing because they have no clue if a new truck would sell or not. This is a hobby that thrives itself on being new, creative, taking risk and to see the model companies not reflect that is slightly discouraging, I'm sorry. Can anyone give me a reason why a single new model truck, say the new Super Duty Ford, since it sells pretty well, would not sell? Does anyone think there would be absolutely no interest in this model? Of coarse not. As it's been said before many people get into this hobby to initially recreate their 1:1 Rides and it grows from there. "Wow, that wasn't that bad. I've always wanted a First Gen Camaro, oh hey I can build one!" I don't deny at all that the 57 Chevies, 32 Fords and 49 Mercury kits out there are a huge part of the hobby.. I'm just saying there is a completely separate side of the hobby that has been ignored for a while and I think if Revell started keeping a decent modern library of kits to sell alongside the classic must haves the hobby would only benefit. I think it is partially cowardly to not attempt to try something new because there is risk in it. Thats all it is when people say "No the money is in 32 fords, 57 Chevies and 49 Mercs so we will only release those is some updated way cause thats what has made money in the past." I know they are a business but to only do what has proved to work because you don't want to take a chance. That's weak sauce. -
Where are the Model Trucks?
The Red Ranger replied to The Red Ranger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I totally understand the logic that a company wants to do whatever they can to make money and retooling a kit they know sells well instead of creating a brand new one they can't be for sure would sell is the quickest way to make money but that wont help the hobby. At the time when I felt there was the most choice in model kits was in the mid 90's and that was the point I felt the hobby was at it's peak (so far). I also say that there are kits that do pretty well right now that may not sell as well if people had more to chose from. It's sort of a lack of options type thing. IF people could choose from a New Dodge pick up, a new F-150 or Super Duty or New Silverado or Suburban, maybe the kits that bring in the cash wouldn't be as effective or perhaps they would but there is no denying that the truck kits would move as quickly. With a new F-150 they could retool that to sell the new Raptor, that Ford truck that is like a stock Desert Runner. You could create a standard set of off road tires and offer a 2nd version of the kits to be the offroad version. How many people would custom make a new SRT/10 pickup or the Super Bee? For the seemingly rare monster truck fans like myself it would finally offer the correct body style for an accurate Bigfoot, or simply offer modern body styles to make your own monsters with. Aren't these positive reasons? The only speculative reason I can think not to put a few more trucks on the market is the chance they wont sell and I don't think that's right, I think they would sell, but sometimes aren't things about taking chances? Don't take a jump and put something new out instead of reissuing old kits that sold well? Variety is the spice of life. -
official WIP drift car build off thread
The Red Ranger replied to diymirage's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Unfortunately I must report that I will not be done in time for the Build off's deadline. I am still going to push through and get the car done but not in time for the deadline. -
Personally, I would try to make the bed flush with the end of the Fenders. That's my personal taste though, so. Other than that You got got me hook, line, and sinker.

First let me say, I am open minded to possibly opening it up, personally. Only if there is absolute no interest in doing the terra tired Monster Trucks. In my mind thats really what I was aiming for because I think there is room for serious creativity. However I do acknowledge that the monster truck kits are becoming rarer these days so people may not want to ruin the kits ( I say buy the awful reissue of Bigfoot with the Flag decals-Wrong body style for that Paint job anyway and you can find those really cheap). Could more people comment here so I know what to aim for. Is there any interest in doing a strictly Terra Tired Monster truck build. The terra tires are what makes a Monster a Monster in my opinion. Jacked up trucks are awesome but if they aren't sportin the 66'' tires they aren't a monster truck for me, I just wanted to point out that the intent behind the suggestion of this was always that. If I misunderstood people and they consider a heavily lifted truck a Monster truck and that's what people wanted to do then I will gladly change it (as long as we include Terra Tire Monsters). So Commenting is essential right now

I am extremely interested to see how this thing works out.

January 14th? I have several builds to finish out the year with so I would need some time...

I will be using a 94 Ford Mustang for my build!

I define a Monster truck as any vehicle, Car, El Camino, Ranchero, SUV, Van, Pickup, that at any point in Monster Truck History could have Raced Digger or Bigfoot. Now back in the beginning they used Military Axles, beefed up suspension, but for all practical purposes were just jacked up trucks. I say the only stipulation is that it must have Scaled 60'' tires or bigger. (I believe since 85 they have used 66'' tires however the very first Bigfoot only sported a 60' I believe.) Monster trucks are trucks that can easily run over a car crushing it and doing little to no damage to the truck itself. Make of that what you will. As it stands though I think the only stipulation should be the tires must be at least a 60' (scaled down of coarse), whether you are building an early Monster Truck or a Modern Racing machine, either one works for me. Thoughts opinions? Open for discussion. Also You must have a name for your Monster, something that isn't taken, or at least something that hasn't been used for a while. The names of Monster Trucks are often as important as the truck itself. I think it also should be painted, decalled, what have you across the hood, tail gate or sides of the vehicles. Unless you are building George Belehan's Escalade I have three Bigfoot Models that are from the old days where it was just the show pieces that crawled over the cars, I do have 5 newer tube chassis Monsters, three of which I will be building for this build Oh and the Date... lets set it for January 7th. That will give a full week into the new year to have these done by.

Hehe Bigfoot Fastrax, I loved that tank.

Thats what the idea was. I wasn't around when the first buildoff started so I don't know what happened to it but it sounds like it kinda flaked or fizzled out so I figure give people an opportunity to finish up, and newer folk a chance to do their own. If everyone is okay with that it just sounds like there is a lot of interest in finishing this once and for all and I'm down to do it.

(that was a Metallica song) So there seems to be some interest in a Monster Truck Build off so I am proposing this! Anyone one interested in building a Monster truck enter here! It can be a stock kit. Really Bigfoot dominated the Model market with like 6 different kits (if you include Snake Bite) there are two Grave Digger kits out there, a TMN Turtle Truck out there and of coarse USA-1. OR Make something original. Maybe you are like me and you have a Monster truck design since you were a kid or something you have always wanted to see. Myself, I would like the builds to be something you could actually see at a Monster Jam event or something like that which doesn't really limit anything but just think of Sponsor placement and things like that. Lets talk more about this, anyone have any suggestions for the build?
-
So there is a lot of interest in this build off, so I figured I would start a thr, ead about it. If you have seen the newer Death Race that is the general idea. Basically, take one of your favorite cars and retro fit it with everything you'd need to survive the apocalypse! Guns, missiles, flame throwers, whatever you want! There are some guys who have built some similar cars already and those are perfectly acceptable, though I really encourage to perhaps build a new one as well, but that's totally up to you! Let me know if there are any questions or anything

Hey guys! It has long been a dream of mine to have a monster truck build off! I am in a Monster Truck Mood so I think we should do it! Only problem, I don't know how many monster truck fans there are in the model world. I think considering that Bigfoot was primarily the only name brand Monster truck made, we should make our own monster trucks. Own names, Paint Jobs, etc. Maybe allow the different bigfoot models, and I think AMT made a Grave Digger and TMN Turtle model, Revell has that nice Snap Kit of Grave Digger, so we allow those but we aim and hope for original monster trucks. I dunno... any interest out there? I am definitely up for the Death Race build off! If we do one lets open a thread and have a build date!

The Caddy is all yours, the Roadrunner (Superbird) was actually boosted a month ago. DusterDemon is building the Superbird and Daytona. Sorry bud. Anything else that catches your eye? -

Where are the Model Trucks?
The Red Ranger replied to The Red Ranger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
THANK YOU! I was throwing the idea around for my monster truck ideas when I realized: there isn't even an HHR model! I mean doing a Modern Day delivery car, a modern day hot rod, how would that not appeal to people? I have often considered getting an HHR to drop in a 350 or something, but that's a real life project I will likely never get around to. -
Where are the Model Trucks?
The Red Ranger replied to The Red Ranger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
My feelings exactly. It's a weird thing where you feel like you milk the cow dry of the audience you still have instead of doing something new with the prospect of a bigger audience. There's no denying that the hobby has been weakened through the years, but they end up shooting themselves in the foot when they only produce the same stuff over and over. -
2010 Dodge Charger Concept (update 10/03/09)
The Red Ranger replied to Peter Lombardo's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I must say, that would be LEGENDARY to see! The one thing that I never noticed, and I don't even mind the way it was done, but the concept was a 4 door also, but it looked so right I literally glanced over it for the first several pics of it. I just got to wonder how they went so wrong with the Charger, and ended up almost too similar to the original Challenger. Thats the Mystery. I really expected the Challenger to end up being as awful but to my surprise there is a nice treat still left at Dodge -
Where are the Model Trucks?
The Red Ranger replied to The Red Ranger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That was exactly my point in starting this thread. I think producing even a few more modern tucks would possibly help the industry as a whole. I think continuously putting out kits that have been around forever gets stale. Yeah, everyone here still enjoy the same kits, but its not really helping bring in younger builders (unless the youngsters come from a modeling family that is). I think having a few more modern cars that younger people can identify with better would be better for the whole industry. It would bring in more money for the industry, enabling them to do even more kits. Reproducing the same cars that have been models time and time again doesn't. I have been in the hobby for 15 years, so don't get me wrong, I love older cars, I love muscle era but I just think it's a tad foolish to exclude some cars that haven't had model counterparts that are some of the most modified vehicles these days. Im not at all pissing and moaning at Revell, simply trying to express some serious interest in hopes that my wants can be fulfilled and if I am right, which I think I am, help out the hobby. I remember when the tuner scene got really big (at least in AZ) about 10 years ago, and never seeing really any imported cars from Revell feeling that mark had been missed. I feel the same way about this, and now I feel maybe I can help or something, I dunno. -
Where are the Model Trucks?
The Red Ranger replied to The Red Ranger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I completely agree with you. I think the nostalgic factor out weighs things too much. I think this is why the industry struggles because there isn't a lot of relatability anymore with models. Even when I was a kid (mid 90's) they did a decent job of putting out current cars, but now as the industry died they stopped. This makes no economical sense. Customizing current cars is still a huge appeal to anyone, and I think catering to a certain crowd that only likes the period cars cuts your throat. I think the biggest appeal to model cars is doing customs you can't afford to do with 1:1 cars. That starts with the cars I drive, as I'm sure it does for anyone. Yes, don't get me wrong. I love late 60's muscle so much. Building old Camaros, Mustangs, GTOs, Chargers in model form is the only way I'll ever build those cars and there is an interest there, but no more than there is for a modern day HHR, or a Modern day F250. Seriously if you guys are really on the same page, let's put something together to present to Revell and Round 2, maybe we can help the Model industry strengthen. -
Where are the Model Trucks?
The Red Ranger replied to The Red Ranger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I guess it boils down for question to me which is, Modeling has downsized severely. I don't really perceive it really as being something a lot of people are exposed to, specially with Walmart and common stores dropping the models. The ones that are still searching and keeping the hobby a live are like, I think, everyone here. People who would love to build anything. I know people have preferences but I'm pretty sure even the Rat rod builder, or the muscle car manic would definitely buy up a couple late model trucks. Maybe I am wrong, and I guess how this thread goes will really tell me. I guess I may be naive when it comes to this hobby, but I don't really perceive anyone to be like "Release 6 different kinds of late model mustangs, but I don't care about any trucks". Does that make any sense at all? So I guess my question now is.... Is there really more interest for the cars they are producing vs late model trucks?
