Murphy's Law, the bane of the modeler's existence. Hang in there, it's gonna look good when done!

What brings you to this forum?
Phil Patterson replied to lonewolf's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm here mainly cause I'm a model car geek, and I'm upset with myself that I didn't find this place and register sooner.... -
I don't remember the number, but last time it was reissued, it was one of the ones with a checkerboard print border for the box art. Several AMT kits had this style as well, it was mainly sold in the "marts" and other big box type of stores.

I used to have that problem on occasion, but not in awhile. One thing I do is heat up the can with hot tap water, shaking the can in my hand then re-immersing it until the can no longer feels cold. This helps you get a finer spray due to more pressure and thinner paint. You don't need to get the can real hot and it's safer if you don't. The other thing is just to mist the coats on, not too thick, until the last coat. I've always suspected part of the problem was getting too much on at once, before all the propellant can gas out. A 3rd option may be just to carefully spray the paint out of the can into a canister, then use an air brush to apply it. Also, I leave 14 to 20 minutes between coats to allow the previous coat to tack up and gas out some before you hit it with more paint.

It is a shame how things went, it'd be nice if some of the missing tooling could be found, but I'm afraid a lot of that hit the smelter a long time ago. I am amazed how the reissue 59 Rambler wagon kit has appreciated, it often goes for higher prices than the original JoHan or ExCel versions! It never did make the shelves around here, sigh, like the Revell 69 Dart, it got rare and expensive before many made it to the shelves.

R-M '71 Cuda..now with vinyl top?
Phil Patterson replied to Rob Hall's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Apparently my info was very out of date! Thanks for the update! I remember the Foose kits being cancelled, but didn't think it would affect the reissue of the aforementioned AAR. I'll be keeping an eye out for the 71 now as well, thanks again! -
I'd go with a white or yellow, something light. Any graphics you decide to use will show up more and light colors make the car appear not as bulky. The 300 may set too low to the ground for side pipes, however, maybe something exiting thru the rocker panel would work. Maybe a thinned down and lowered Challenger T/A hood scoop would work. That car would be a rocket ship with a Viper V-10!

R-M '71 Cuda..now with vinyl top?
Phil Patterson replied to Rob Hall's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I'm just hoping it isn't built on the Challenger's wheelbase. I never had any of that issue but heard plenty about it from people that weren't too pleased. Also, semi off-topic, but I wonder when the AMT 70 Cuda , rumored to be an update on the old 74 MPC snapper kit that has been around forever, is going to hit the shelves. -
Only thing that may be a problem is if that resin body is based on the old Monogram 1/24th Model A kits and the 1/25th frame from the Revell 32 may end up looking a bit small under it. The Monogram 30 Ford touring street rod was reissued not that long ago, should be readily available, but the parts are pretty dated. A nice 32 Ford frame in 1/24th may be hard to find unless there's an aftermarket piece out there. Of course, a lot of things can be concealed if you plan to channel the body down over the frame.

Your best shot at a temporary repair at least would be to fit the broken pieces together, then put a drop of liquid cement like Ambroid or Tenax at either end and let the liquid flow into the seam. A line will probably still show, but either of those 2 liquid glues won't cloud or haze the plastic "glass" like tube or super glue. It's worth a shot at least until you can find a replacement, depending on how hard the car would be to get back apart after completion.

Just got a Lindberg Dodge Grand Caravan with the Illinois State Police decals off of eBay. I haven't been to the hobby shop this week though, too busy running errands with and for the kids.

I just want to point out, at my local big "W" store, the Dodge L-700 kit must have caught on all of a sudden. My daughters drag me in their quite often for girl stuff and knick knacks so I get to browse the model and magazine shelves fairly often. I had noticed that the Revell 49 Mercury custom was and is still selling pretty good, while the L-700 kits just sat there. Then all of a sudden, the L-700s cleared out and they've since restocked that shelf twice and it's still almost empty again! I didn't think there was that many modelers around here, especially big rig modelers. I expect quite a few will be used for "hauling" stock car models. Also, people may have suddenly realized that the kit was actually 3 kits in one, which increased it's desirability. I don't have plans yet for the trailer or the Palmer based 40 Ford kit, but I don't mind putting them in the stash for later... Looks like Lindberg may have a hot seller on it's hand and maybe we'll be seeing more from them especially considering the scaling back that has been rumored by both Revell and AMT. I always expect when one company drops the ball and walks away, someone else will step up to run with it, looks like the one streaking for the goal line at this time is Lindberg!

Revell '66 El Camino 2n1 "California Wheels"
Phil Patterson replied to LOBBS's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
One of the problems with the 66 ElCo when first released was that it was a "donut box" issue. There was a lot of problem with damage and lost parts due to box failure when the weak box would split or crush if stacked too high on the shelves or treated roughly in the back room. Same problem happened with the 41 Chevy and 46 Ford Woody as well and there may be others I've overlooked. The 41 Chevy seems to have done well the 2nd time around, the 66 El Camino should do as well also. -
glue for clear parts
Phil Patterson replied to Mike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've used puzzle glue of various brand, but I suspect its the same thing as Elmers. -
Revell Austin Healey 100-6 in progress.
Phil Patterson replied to Phil Patterson's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Not to knock on current workers too hard, but back then they had pride of workmanship and attention to detail, without all the hurry and time constraints they have today. Of course, they made Palmer kits back then at well, but even they had some nice items, especially their boat kits from what I've seen. It just seems like it's too expensive these days for them to sweat the details today like they did in the past and sometimes the final product suffers. Those old Revell multi-piece body kits are better than they are given credit for, I've got a Revell Mercedes Benz 190 SL coupe in the works as well, though that one won't be stock when finished. -
I posted this on the HH nee Spotlight board, but figured I'd share it here as well. "The color is Rustoleum Harbor Blue, and it's about 60% done. It's an old multi-piece body with 6 pieces, 2 sides, hood and trunk area, and front and rear gravel pans. Lots of sanding and seam filling on this one! This one was one of the later reissues that I got a good price on due to a crushed box. Good looking kit though, but in typical vintage Revell fashion, lots of little parts! Interior is going to be in leather color, other than that I'm not sure what other colors I may use. Sorry about the grainy pics, the completed pics should be better. I hope to have it finished by my birthday in April, though I may get a wild hair and finish it before then. You can probably tell I just put the parts together without glue and placed it there by the rear springs sticking up in the trunk! BTW, if you build one, the chassis fit is kind of tight and a bit tricky, so handle carefully when test fitting the body so you don't crack any of those body seams! Yet another kit I probably wouldn't have considered building if not for a HH, scuse me, Spotlight Hobbies posting day! Lots of parts, body shape is correct and good detail, but extra attention will be needed for paint prep. Be extra careful of the grille fitment before final paint. Tightening up the seams caused the grille opening to close up slightly and I had to trim it carefully, while not damaging the paint, to get the grille installed. If you like the subject and can overlook the vintage nature of assembly, I recommend the kit."

58 Edsel Four-Door?
Phil Patterson replied to larrygre's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Sounds like a natural for a transkit using the AMT 58 Edsel, and I wouldn't mind seeing 59's and 60s setup to use the AMT kit for parts as well, especially a 59 wagon like my dad had! -
There were all over eBay this summer, but they disappeared quickly. I thought they were a R&R item, but not really sure. Does anyone know who did these and will they be doing some more? Also , if they sold so well, along with recasting the 66 Valiant, maybe they should do some other years like 64 and 65. I'd suggest the other years but 60-62 had a lot of issues by both Revell and AMT while 63 Valiant doesn't command the prices the 64-65s do, though I'd take one of those as well!

Surprise Model King Announcement
Phil Patterson replied to S. Svendsen's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I bought a couple of the earlier "resurrecting" issues, but I'll be getting a couple more of the new ones, if only for the box art and decal sheet! -
I've got to wonder if Testors will eventually phase out their line of never-dry enamels. Some are better than others, and whatever happens, I hope they keep #1246 Metallic Silver. It may say enamel on the label, but it drys quick and doesn't react to Testors lacquer or anything else I've sprayed over it. I like it especially as a color barrier for colored plastics. Also, it strips easy, so it makes my painting mistakes a lil easier to erase!

New to the Forum
Phil Patterson replied to parki's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll make a point to drop a note here if I do so, but don't hold your breath, still going to be busy a bit longer doing the Dad thing! If I make it back, I think the first thing I'll do is buy a box of MilkFlakes, a can of Treacle then go find me some scones and clotted cream! Maybe there'll be some new Airfix kits on the shelves by then... -
