I use 3-M Acryl Blue or Green spot putty quite a bit, it drys quick and I'm used to using it on 1/1 scale cars. However, it is somewhat brittle and will crack if flexed, so you have to not put it on too thick. I've been using Tamiya 2-part putty for places that need extra strength, but it can be hard to get around here a times. I didn't know that 3-M did a two part spot putty, so thanks for the info!

Sorry to hear that, it's a drag when you look forward to something and it gets cancelled. NCWVSM decided to cancel their show too. http://ncwvsm.freeservers.com/ Funny thing is, the last show of theirs I went to the place was packed. I had heard that some of the organizers were suffering from burn out, it is a big job. I haven't heard anything from the guys near Wheeling, but I'm afraid they may be out of action for this year as well. The show in Dunbar WV is still on as far as I know, the Kanawha Scale Modelers are still going strong, last I heard.

I like the modification you did to the kit on the front and rear gravel pans! I've got this one in my stash, but not sure when I'm going to start on it, have to wait for inspiration!

New to the Forum
Phil Patterson replied to parki's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's been a long long time, I was just starting my freshman grade, 9th grade in high school at the time , so that would have been late summer 1972! I'm sure it's changed some since I've been there, but it always had a timeless quality to the place. My mum's maiden name was Tucker and my gran's name was Wood. I don't know if many of my relatives are left over there, a good portion moved to the states after the war, and quite a few more afterward. I hope to visit again in a few years after my kids are out of high school and hopefully have their feet under them by then! -

Wow, it's a small world indeed! I grew up in West Virginia, but my mother's family is from Buckfestleigh in Devon. I stayed with a friend of hers in Ashburton right across the street from the old church and cemetary there. Sorry, it's been so long I can't remember the name, I'd love to go back sometime. That's where I saw Airfix kits in bags for the very first time, I thought I had found the deal of the century until my Mum advised me about the exchange rate between dollars and pounds! -
OT: My new set of wheels
Phil Patterson replied to Casey429's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That looks nice! I had a 94 F-100 myself. Mine was a black extended cab XLT 4x4 with the 351. I always liked how solid it felt. I ended up trading it in on my 2004 Diesel Ram, but I've still got good memories of that old Ford. -
model king '70 buick hits the shelves!
Phil Patterson replied to S. Svendsen's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Thanks! I'm more of a Mopar head, so what got changed when on Buicks isn't something I would know without having to look for it. At least the 70 Impalas and Pontiacs are available due to the reissues, thank goodness! -

Hmm, I wonder what would make a good driveline-chassis donor, I assume the 70 has a typical era AMT plate chassis. Either AMT 66 Wildcat or 66 Riviera come to mind, though I don't know how accurate they would be for a 70. 66 Wildcat is pretty basic, but might be the easier to use. -

And on that note, I bought the last Revell 49 Merc they had on the shelf at the Weston Walmart. They also only had 2 of the Lindberg L-700s left, so if they put new stock on the shelves, it will sell. Sad to say, someone had broken into one of the L700 kits and taken something out of it so that'll be one they can't sell. I remember similar problems with the lowrider wheels in the Revell-Monogram kits. That kind of loss from theft can only hurt the hobby. -
Can someone help me?
Phil Patterson replied to Len Colombo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If you right click on their name, you can view their profile. On the left of that page is a place to click where you can send a message. If the recipient's name isn't there, just type it in. I expect you can click on anyone's name to get to the particular link you need. -

Maybe it's an early expansion for the Christmas shopping season. I know in past years I've scored quite a bit of leftover kits during the after Christmas New Years sales, though not so much recently. I'm not complaining , it's good to see the kits on the shelves again. -
Model King Challenger funny car
Phil Patterson replied to S. Svendsen's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
I already saw this on the "other" board, but thanks again to all involved! Also, Sven, I showed your artwork on the decal sheet to some Mopar friends of mine, I'm expecting more than a few are going to buy the kit just for display, they were very impressed! This looks to be a kit to buy multiples of to put in your stash! -

The box and artwork is excellent, this is one I'd be happy to buy just to set on my shelf. Not that I will, I'll at least glue the engine halves together, lol! -

I don't know what they're doing, they revamped the model section at the Weston WV store, yet the hobby section has about disappeared at both the Clarksburg and Buckhannon super stores. They've got a little competition from The Hobby Stop in Bridgeport, WV, but it's not like that's a huge store and they're main deal is railroad hobbyists, though modeling is a good third of the store. Maybe it's just a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, it happens often enough in large corporations. -

I use Firefox, I had been having to log in every time but now it's been remembering me the last few times around. -
Very nice! I did a yellow one over that old Monogram swirly blue plastic some time ago. It took some prep to not have the plastic show through the paint. I intend to build another one some day, different color next time!

I've used it, but found it a little hard to sand as well. What I do is use enough of the Tamiya for the main shape, then scuff it with rough sand paper, then do my final filling and sanding with 3-M Spot putty. I prefer the 3-M Acryl-Blue or Green over the red, they seem to dry better and faster.

Its been so hot the past few weeks I haven't even bothered putting glue to plastic, it's been too sticky and hot to bother with it. I'm happily looking forward to fall, my favorite season of the year, even more so than usual because of this. I'm just glad I haven't tried painting yet, I expect the heat and humidity play heck on paint application. I need to get air conditioning, lol!

I love old work trucks, looking forward to seeing you finish your 37! Also, here's a link to a model inspired by those same lyrics, and the owner of the album has got quite a few other pics there as well. http://public.fotki.com/mjcole/hobby_heave...testentry2.html

Hobby Heaven closed
Phil Patterson replied to gasman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I see everyone is having a fun time piling on Hobby Heaven, but you better realize that Tom's business may be the canary in the coal mine. I always got good service from them and compared to the rest of my eBay purchases, he always delivered the fastest except for the one time I bought something from a neighboring town and picked it up in person, myself! I'm just glad to see that both this forum and HHMB seem very busy, showing more hobbyist interest than is generally believed to exist. I'm sorry that some of you had a bad time there, but that is the nature of message boards on occasion and HHMB is hardly the worse. I think old Ben Franklin said it best when he said, "We must all hang together, or most assuredly we will all hang separately." I remember when the hobby imploded in the late 70s, I can't say I would enjoy seeing it happen again then waiting another 10 years for it to recover, at best, IF ever. Hobby Heaven is history, I expect the message board will eventually be the only remnant and the plug will be pulled on that once Mr. Carter tires of paying the bill, for whatever reason. I just can't see that as a good thing. -
The competition and neglect by the big box stores has also played a part, you can't sell your product if you can't get shelf space. Yet those same big box stores probably put out of business anyone in your home town that sold model kits, whether it was a department store or some small local hobby shop. There's still a market for the hobby and kit hobbies in general, but it has to compete for shelf space with rows and rows of deodorant, generic cookies and who knows what else. I doubt that the model kit business is the only one negatively affected by the "marts", it's just been so obvious to us in the hobby, we may be overlooking others. That AMT or Revell kit may only be the first thing you can't get at the store anymore.

What gets me is this is announced after I started working on adapting the old AMT 32 sedan body from the 40Willys-32Sedan kit to a new Revell 32 Deuce coupe kit. Oh well, another partially finished project in the stash isn't anything unusual. I think the AMT 32 sedan body is sectioned slightly anyway.....
