  1. Dept of corrections Lee was the second American owner - the Alfa came to the U.S. pre-war but it was Don Lee who entered the car in Indy post-war ... Post war Indianapolis races featured some fascinating pre-war cars - often from Europe In fact Lee also purchased and entered a unique Pre-war Mercedes GP car in the '46 race nominally entered by his son Tommy - I shall be exploring this machine - later - not soon - but some time I tend to herd a lot of cats ....
  2. the car has a great history - these sites have excellent articles on the car and on Indy entrant Lee Hagerty.com Theoldmotor.com justacarguy.blogspot.com I'll post some more of my photos as I go ...
  3. The idea is to make the Don Lee Special - as raced in 46 and 47 - and as owned by the Taylors - I’ll need to modify the body - widen it - and modify the rear suspension - and give it the finish of an unrestored Indy car that is over seventy years old …
  4. The kit replicates a series I Alfa P3 - a Grand Prix winner pre-war - before Mercedes Benz and Auto Union entered the fray … for those of you who are unfamiliar w these resin kits fr Portugal - the wire wheels are pre-assembled and cast into resin tires - not quite as good as the best 3D printed wires - but pretty close ….
  5. So this is what spills out of the box - lots and lots of …. Resin …
  6. Here’s the kit - a 24th scale resin kit by Fernando Pinto - Pierre is building an earlier Pinto Alfa - the Lemans winner - this kit of the P3 Grand Prix car is the latest 24th sc by Pinto - and he is improving as he goes - as you will see shortly -
  7. Call Mr. Lee happened upon the Don Lee Special at the 2020 Amelia Island Concourse - 3 days before the COVID pandemic shutdown ... Its nominally a 1932 Alfa grand prix car with some 1934/5 mods - found its way to the U.S. post war when purchased by L.A. businessman Don Lee Lee entered this car in the '46 and '47 Indy/s now owned by Hugh and Jennifer Taylor It has the distinction of being a rare unrestored pre war grand prix and post war Indy car - and its still a runner so it is unique - to say the least ...
  8. sleek - love the driving compartment - you mite have to show this off in Orlando ...
  9. Picture 3. - good example of a need-to-sand after guide coat of primer pic 4 - tire casting flaws - CA and a finger (any finger) will remove some of the pits …. but the wheel/tires in my new Alfa does not have these flaws - i do think Fernando will replace these if you want … if rim is steel or polished - consider asking for some replacements …
  10. I usually have to do this two or three times …
  11. Lovely …. er. …. In a manly way …
  12. Holy cow Francois - have you tried Zero Paint’s textured paint? Might work for the body shell …
  13. Lemansdecals.com ? check their site ..
  14. so I got an idea - there were a number of fascinating entries that were no shows - such as the early Ford GT40's - they weren't quite baked in March of 64 - so they were not entered so we'll just pretend that said Cheeta was an entry - so it's in looks great anyway ... by the way - give it a race number NOT used by the starters ..
  15. The NNL south in Atlanta in early Nov is a must do - check the ACME model club site - im scheming a weekend drive thru Florida - i haven’t been to the show in bout six years - the travel committee will have a fit - but you never know … there’s also an IPMS Regional contest in Orlando in mid Oct - but the NNL south event is THE event for cars …
  16. Pierre - if you’ve caught the pre-war resin kit bug - i’ve got some more bad news for you …. My FPP ‘32 Alfa just arrived and you’ll notice that Pinto has upped his game - your Lemans kit is an earlier design - the GP kit has a better one peice engine casting and a hinged bonnett set up the looks like it should work well …. And the wheel assembly is just a little better …
  17. As you can see - the level of detail was as great as in the later 20th sc kits - i wasn’t crazy about the cockpit parts but it was the best 24th sc open wheel kit then produced …
  18. Some of the old sub-assemblies that have been patiently waiting their turn …
