jchrisf replied to jchrisf's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks @Zoom Zoom Bob, I've got 2 #46s in my cart. I've learned a lot from your posts and articles. I'm going to follow your instructions for decanting Tamiya Spray cans.. glad to see I don't have to wait to long too use them. Thanks @SfanGoch -

Do Lacquer Fumes Kill Caronavirus?

I will be decanting a lot of Tamiya because the last hobby store in town is closing down and had a bunch for half off. I snagged a bunch and will go back Monday and get the rest if they have any left. Guy only takes cash. Getting ready to order Tamiya Thinners (Lacquer and Acrylic) along with the Mr. Hobby Leveling thinner to use with my Tamiya cans and bottled acrylics too. I also think Tamiya Light Gun Metal is about the nicest looking silver I have ever seen on a car. I have several Tamiya kits that I plan to follow by the manual until I get a lot more experience and knowledge so I will be using only their paints on them. Yeah @StevenGuthmiller that is another reason I want to use the airbrush, so I won't be so heavy with the crazing primers and lacquers. -

Do Lacquer Fumes Kill Caronavirus?

Thanks Steve.. exactly what I was looking for... paints specific for plastic cars and ready to go. I do appreciate Tamiya as an inexperience newb because they lay out exactly what colors to use so there is no guessing on my part. Their sprays decanted might be the better deal but I'd rather go for ease of use now to make my experience easier and more successful. Plus I want to use an airbrush for as much as I can.. I find using the airbrush when everything is mixed correctly to be the most enjoyable part of model building. -

This guy ruined the paint using automotive paints and switched to Tamiya using Mr Hobby Super Clear III as a clear coat with great results -

Do Lacquer Fumes Kill Caronavirus?
jchrisf replied to jchrisf's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I would do that with Tamiya Acrylics and everything but the body if they are durable, which they appear to be but I don't have any experience with them. For the body how would you get them shiny and smooth? Also, Tamiya Acrylics stink. -
I love it Bruce!

Do Lacquer Fumes Kill Caronavirus?

Thanks Roger, I actually like using an airbrush when the paint is mixed correctly. If I can get paint that is either ready to go or has mix ratios that are easy to use I think I would really enjoy it. I did a lot of experimenting before with craft Acrylics and could get nice, smooth paint jobs out of them but they were not shinny and they didn't have any durability. For non shiny things on the car I might use the Tamiya Acrylics but I know how to mix those now and I'll stick with their thinners.. no cheap shortcuts for me this time. I think I will try AK Extreme metal paints for metallic paint.. it is premixed for the airbrush. I'm also going to build as much of the car up before paint (and final glue) to test fit things first to avoid unexpected issues with fit this time too... Then I can possibly handle things less after paint. We'll see how it goes. Some of my biggest issues were humidity so I'm going to have to paint indoors and paint cans will over power my booth. -
LOL... I'm going to give this modeling another try. I think it was the painting that gave me the most frustrations and problems, but I've decided to use airbrushed lacquers this time for better results. For a newb to airbrushing which paints do you all recommend for best results? I know @Zoom Zoom likes to decant Tamiya spray paints as I have read several posts/articles from him stating the fact so I will definitely do that but as far as not having to decant I was thinking Mr. Color bottled lacquers. Are there better deals out there for pre mixed hobby paints? I don't want the crazing of paints from auto parts stores like I experience with my last attempt. I'm hoping the airbrush will cut down on paint fumes around my spray booth so I can bring it inside to my home office and vent out the window to get better results without the heat and humidity of my Central Florida garage.

Ernie's Hobby Shop is going out of business by the Melbourne Airport. Everything is half price.. has lots of Tamaya and Testors/Model Masters paints, Styrene and model kits. It was my first stop there yesterday, I was early for an appointment and stopped in.. glad I did.. Got lots of paint and a nice Sprint Car Revell kit along with a 1/16 Petty kit for great prices.

How do you all paint in the humidity
jchrisf replied to jchrisf's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have my booth vented out the garage door. I don't have windows in my garage and it is made of concrete block. I have to lower the garage down till it touches the hose and holds it in place. I have a 30' hose that I can then move about 15' around the corner of the house so it doesn't come back in. However, the stink still overpowers my paint booth so their are fumes around me and in the garage. I've been thinking about getting a very small plastic tool shed that I can put up (hide) next to the house that is just big enough for me to paint in (with spray booth). I'll put a portable A/C in it to cool it and reduce humidity before I start painting. That is about the only thing I can come up with unless I decant the clear or get a bottle of it and reduce my pressure considerably so the booth can better handle it. -
Sanding and polishing....
jchrisf replied to SCRWDRVR's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
David Thibodeau uses a dremel to polish his 2k clears. If it doesn't queue up to the right part go to 15:28 for his explanation. Said he used to be a hand polisher only guy. -
Florida has been having days of 40% humidity lately and this past week was the first time I have sprayed a clear coat in this low humidity. It came out great! The last time I sprayed a clear was several months ago and it was very humid.. it clouded up and ruined my paint. For those who get great results in high humidity do you have any tips? I cannot paint anything to toxic in my garage because the the air return in there and will send it all throughout the house. Our home owner's association will also not let us have storage buildings/shops in our back yards. I've been using spray cans outside for the clear but I do have a small paint booth and airbrush. The automotive clears (duplicolor) I use are just too toxic for the garage.
