    1960 DeSoto

After following a 1960 DeSoto with its outrageous fins and tail lights on a recent AACA club drive, I had to finish this kit bought last year. This was the 1974 Johan USA Oldies re-release. It had quite a bit of flash, and found small parts like the steering wheel to be brittle. Based on the condition of the box, the kit must have been stored in a hot attic for decades. I used the tires from the AMT '62 T-bird, mirrors and antenna from my parts box. There's a black, real '60 Adventurer hardtop for sale locally at a classic car dealership.
  2. Nice, I'm working on this old kit myself. Someone told me these USA Oldies re-releases were about $2 each at K-Marts in the late 70s, and hardly anyone wanted them.
  3. Thanks, everyone. I like building some of these kits I tackled as a kid over 50 years ago. Tom Daniel Paddy Wagon, Tijuana Taxi, AMT '66 Mustang, Myers Manx, and the '65 Chevelle wagon are some of the kits I've redone in the past three years.
  4. A little detail painting will help the chassis. The AMT '65 Ford has a better one, but I don't think it's worth the effort getting it to work with the '69 body.

    75 Torino

Thanks for the heads up on the Revell kit. I'm working on a resin-body '69 Mustang hardtop, which will sort of have the same theme, big & littles, jacked up in the rear, etc.
  6. Fabulous. My first new car was an '82 GT liftback in that light blue metallic.

    75 Torino

Awesome! took quite a few photos of what is supposed to be the actual Starsky & Hutch TV car at a local show, so I have those to work with whenever I get to this kit.
  8. I applied the stripes along the doors and rear quarters too low, but they're there.
  9. It's a Commander, not Champion. My bad!
  10. Built from the early 90s AMT/Ertl release, and it has just come out again in a collectable tin box. Considering this dates back to the mid-60s, it goes together very well with no problems. I remember building it with the Chrysler Hemi and twin blowers over 50 years ago.
  11. Very simple old kit with a one-piece chassis, four pieces to the interior counting the shifter. I used the 2004 AMT/Ertl re-release, some leftover parts and Keith Marks decals to finish it. I've heard a rumor that Round 2 may re-issue this kit later this year.
  12. Cool, great job! I've built models of several of the cars I've owned or still have.
  13. Super! I have two of those kits, having found another sealed one at an antique/junk store a few weeks ago. One will be Vintage Burgundy like Jay Leno's.

    Mustang SSP

I know Dave, people go crazy when they see them restored at shows.
  15. Fabulous, all of them!

    Mustang SSP

Early 90s North Carolina Highway Patrol Mustang SSP "slicktop". I remember when South Carolina sold theirs off in the late 90s, and nice survivors are selling at a premium now. Built from the 2013 Revell 2-in-1 release.
  17. Hmm, Rex, maybe. Or you can wait 'till Revell comes out with their '71 Mustang, whenever that will be. Some guys have used the MPC '71-'73 Cougar chassis and engine bay, but I think the wheelbase is slightly longer than the Mustangs.
  18. Awesome, thanks for the tip on the cast paint for your wheels.
  19. Yes, Nigel, I have one of those little green Matchbox Cougars. The Custom Cougar was one of the first 16 Hot Wheels to be released in '68.
  20. Stephen, I'd love to do a '70, especially the convertible, but those MPC kits are even more rare and expensive than the '67-'68s. 1/18 and 1/64-scale die casts will have to do for that year. I did a convertible conversion on AMT's '69, came out just ok, and may attempt another one to do the James Bond car in the future.
  21. Ha, ha, reminds me of a hitch in a receiver, something I've experienced.
  22. They both look fantastic, but imagine bashing your shin on the Chevy's exhaust extension time and time again.
  23. Thanks, guys. On the other AMT '67-'68s I'd done, I used the front chassis sections and engine bays from either Revell's '68 Mustang or AMT's '67 Mustang/GT-350. I didn't bother this time, just using the '69 chassis with its flaws. Actually, when the Cougar came out in late '66, this chassis was better than most of the promo-style kits that were offered.
  24. This is the third and final AMT '68 Cougar that I'll do. I'm saving one mint kit with the great box art that will stay unbuilt. I got this from a Facebook group, kept the paint since it looks very close to a factory color, and used a lot of parts from the early 90s '69 Cougar 428 CJ kit. Instead of factory stock this time, I decided on an 80s or 90s street machine. Traction bars came in a set of 8 from Shapeways, and decals from Keith Marks. The wheels with spinners came from my parts box, but unsure which kit. I've now completed one '67 Cougar, three '68s, two funny cars with a third in process, several 69s, and a have '71 planned.
