Thanks Randy for the kind words. I can't believe I was able to prime on Friday night, color coat yesterday afternoon, clear this morning, and mask and paint the fenders this afternoon. And it looks really good considering I my limited airbrush experience. The HOK paint went on sooooo nice in my cheapie Badger brush and my knocking and rattling old compressor. I'm not touching a THING tonight as I'll assemble it tomorrow night, and can go into Tuesday if necessary. Just need to pick up a display case at my LHS (conveniently…) near my shop (Extreme Hobbies on Dear Park Ave.) and either see what we have or go to Staples and have the shop logo made for the background of the case. You'll see…..

And here's the body with the masking removed. I'm so pleased with how nice this is turning out. It's only meant to be in a display case on a shelf in an office. A quick surprise build for my Boss. His office is full of Die Cast, Vintage gas powered tether cars, and memorabilia (He just bought a 60's vintage Texaco gas pump for the reception area). A replica of his truck he'll appreciate. I'm doing this because aside from having a cool job, he's a really cool guy who's becoming a friend that happens to be my Boss. The party he threw last weekend at his house for us shows he cares. Just returning the gesture…..

Ross Gibson...engines...sad news
FASTBACK340 replied to Howard Cohen's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH…. hate hearing stuff like this. Condolences to his friends and family. While I never knew or met him, I have been a customer of his for many years. Thank you for your services & RIP Mr. Gibson -
Gotta love lacquer….. Masked the body, hit the fender seems with clear, and blew on some black. Barring a crisis, I'm done with the majority of this build. A little bare metal work, re-assemble the trim I removed, and pop the new rims & tires on. Park it in a display case and done. Why can't I get black to lay down like this on a contest build? I'll peel off the mask tomorrow and it must go together Tuesday. Think I got this…..

………… ………………………………... That's &^%$%^& awesome! Great idea and execution! -
I'm looking forward to adding this gem to the pile. Mobius has been the company to watch, and continue to support, of late.
-
Was this a slip of the (cyber)tongue about something from Mobius we don't know about? It must be a challenge to keep info quiet 4-8 months before it can be disclosed…..

More updates! I'm making up for lost time….. Last night before bed I painted the stock steel wheels from the Galaxie `49 Chevy kit. This morning I decided to clear-coat the pearl orange first for two reasons: The first being the black I have is gloss, so no sense in a double-clear/gloss. The second being after I mask-off the fenders I can blow on a light coat of clear against the edge of the tape to give me a razor sharp separation line. In a few minutes I'm dropping on 2 more light coats….. Hopefully this will go together quickly. All it has to do is look good up on a shelf, not scrutinized. More updates to follow!

Gonna need some room for a radiator, but otherwise it's a great idea.

Now that I bought and wrapped my last holiday gift I have spare time. Last night I painted a GMC die cast and am loving using my airbrush more and more. I also have the parts laid out for the `Cuda. I really should get that done next. I also have to fix my spray booth vent. The house smelled like an odd combination of fresh-baked cookies and lacquer paint gassing out.

I know. That's why I said "if you just bolted it in…." The Corvair swap is one of those old "some assembly (and engineering…) required" conversions. The RIGHT way to run that engine is using a reverse-rotation camshaft and get it operating to work with the VW transaxle gearing. But in the modeling world, the Corvair is a more detailed, and easily modified, choice.
-
While visually interesting, the Corvair engine rotates opposite the VW, which means if you just "bolted it in" you would have 4 speeds in reverse and a super low one forward gear! reverse-rotation cams were available as opposed to flipping the transaxle which put load on the coast side of the gears, leading to early transaxle failures. Besides, a turbo 2.4 litre beetle engine makes insane power!

I was one of those "airbrushes are too much trouble" guys years ago. Let me tell you something, once you get a routine (and it's NOT that involved….) the difference is like using a crayon or a nice Cross pen. I blew this on in 15 minutes. I'll mask the fenders in the morning, blow on the black, then clear it Sunday night, maybe Monday morning before work.

For me years ago it was $389.00 for a mint, un-built original issue AMT '65 Hurst Hemi under Glass Barracuda. Being the Grail Barracuda kit for me when I bought it I accepted the fact they weren't getting any cheaper or plentiful. And I can always build the re-issue. I haven't seen one on e-Bay in ages too....

THE Color for Particular Cars?
FASTBACK340 replied to Snake45's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I tend to think German sports cars in a steel-bluish-silver. Italian Sports cars in Red…. British sports cars in Green, etc. Iconic cars I envision early Mustangs in poppy Red, early GTO's in either Gold or Yellow, Road Runners in Orange, GTX's in Black. VW Beetle (late models) in light blue…. Squareback's too. VW Beetle (early models) in dark blue…. Miata's in that similar Petty-blue they had Interesting topic to jog the brain….. -
We have a `54 GMC Surburban shop-truck and I wanted to replicate it. Unfortunately I was only able to find a `51 and yes, I know there are some differences, but thats OK. This is going to sit on a shelf in my shops office so it's not being built to a contest standard! Cheapie die cast 1/25 I picked up on e-Bay for a few bucks. I managed to obtain some of the actual paint they used on his truck. It's a House of Color pearl orange w/ black fenders. Quick, fun project I hope to knock-out fast.
