build research
Hollywood Jim replied to CrazyGirl's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
As others have said, it depends on what your building. And what level of detail you want to replicate. When I built this I downloaded hundreds of photos. Here is a picture of a real car that I downloaded for reference. . -

I stopped buying kits for future projects about 10 years ago. Now I only buy a kit for the current project I'm working on. I let others buy the kits and then store then for me. When I need one I may pay a tiny bit more for it, but I figure the extra cost I'm paying goes to the guy who brought the kit and stored it for me. And sometimes the kit costs even less then the original price when new. This is not an easy thing to do because I want some of the new kits just because they are cool kits. I have to constantly resist the urge to buy. When you think about it, how many new kits go way up in value 5 or 10 years after they first go on sale? I would say very very few of them. OK so maybe this is one that went up. I paid about $20 for it a few years ago. Now it's up to about $50 with shipping. But I still have no plans for the kit yet. . -
I'm confused. Where is the bashing taking place? The dictionary says bashing means: 1. To strike with a heavy, crushing blow. 2. To beat or assault severely. Are you bashing the kit by removing parts from it? Thus making it an incomplete kit. Or are you bashing the design of the the one or two kits that you are using? Or are you bashing the model your building by making extreme changes to it? If I take the wheels from one kit and combine them with all of the parts from another kit am I bashing? If not, why not? How many parts must I remove from one kit to be bashing? .

Thank you ! The headers and collectors where scratch built out of plastic. I painted the collectors enamel rust color. Then white acrylic. Then I used acrylic crackel paint. The crackel paint is clear and causes the acrylic white to crack all over. Which exposes the rust color. Then I added a tiny bit of orange acrylic wash in places. . . .

Thank you ! The body was done like this: Four coats enamel red primer. One coat enamel light blue Slowly wet sand (3200 grit) exposing some of the primer in key areas. Be careful it is easy to sand through the primer. Dust the exposed primer areas with rust colored powder. Can use chalk, I use Bragdon weathering powders. The camera does not pick up the rust powders. It looks better in person. The underside frame rusted as follows: Enamel Ruddy brown (Red) Primer Enamel Rust color. Brush on bottle paint add dirt/dust while wet. Dirt/dust VERY important Enamel Brown or rubber colored wash, even gray works in some spots Acrylic Thin black wash Acrylic Thin Pure Pumpkin color wash, maybe some light orange in different places Acrylic Tiny bit, dry brush light orange The key to this rust process is the dust and fine dirt. . . .

Just my 2 cents. I don't think an introduction section is a good idea. I would probably never visit it. And thereby never say hello and welcome to new people. I like having only one place to go, here in General Topics, to see what's new. You might consider changing the name of this section to "General Topics and Introductions". . . .
