  1. OK, but I must say that I did not build the Diner! It belongs to a friend of mine in Germany and it was used as a backdrop for my cars at last year's model show in Frankfurt. That maroon 51 Chevy convertible is one of the first car models I ever built, it is over 30 years old. The whole effort was meant to be a special occasion to bring together all the models I have given to friends during the past three decades. All those models are now back in the various collections. Needless to say I was well chuffed. They did not tell me anything about their plans beforehand, so you can imagine my surprise when I saw this at the show.
  2. Which means it'll be a runaway sales success because every keeper upper with the Joneseser will buy one.
  3. I can only hope that the Rat Rod movement will fade into oblivion as a fad of the early millennium, like billet did two decades earlier. I had seen enough Rat Rods in my life after I saw the first one. Now having written that, I admire how plausibly some people in here can translate this Rat Rod look into a model. If I was a judge at a contest, I'd probably give this more weight than yet another three coats of clear followed by two hours of using a polishing kit.
  4. I'll start using the proper terms when Nobby stops saying "we blew the motor" after the engine went poof.
  5. Why a De Lorean at all? It says in the article "but cost is projected to be in the $90-100K range". Makes me think. If I had that kind of money to spend on a car, and they'd show me a De Lorean next to a - let's say - Z06, I'd for some strange reason opt for the latter.
  6. If a judge judges based on his personal preferences, he should be recused. He has to judge the quality and execution of the build. His personal opinion he can discuss at the bar, but during judging it is irrelevant.
  7. Not if it is a Rover V8, which weighs nearly 20 kg less than that lazy PRV V6 they opted for in the first place.
  8. It certainly wasn't for me. To the contrary. Thinking about it, I only know people who tried their own thing and not follow anybody.
  9. Would you deny your children pursuing their dream? When I became involved in motorsports, my parents were fiercely against it and used every means available to them to emotionally blackmail me. Actually, you should have heard my mother when I so much as bought my first 50cc moped at age 15. I can assure you, that my children will not face such opposition from me should they demonstrate ambitions in this direction. I kept telling my parents what I truly believe: Don't forget who is really in control. We go when he calls our number, whether we do something dangerous or not, has zero influence on this.
  10. What the De Lorean really needs, and always needed, is a big bloody V8.
  11. Sometimes ya just can't win? You can leave the 'sometimes' away. I'm a pessimist. That's an optimist with experience.
  12. I can achieve all your Achilles Heels without being reliant on a single disorder.
  13. Dr. Cranky may find this inspirational:
  14. I used very similar solutions for the past 30 or so years on red plastic. This is the first time where I really don't have the choice and have to confront the problem head on.
  15. The building has been knocked down long ago. Just look it up on Google Earth. This was also discussed in this thread: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=20855
  16. Or a Porsche 928 if you chop and section it
  17. OK, this is what I want to know. - What is going to be reissued? - Who do I have to contact to get on the waiting list now? - What is the paypal address I have to send an advance payment to? There are a few more technical questions, if I may. - It always was my understanding, that the remaining inventory ended up with Okey Spaulding. Is, or is this not the case? - Aren't Jo-Han molds made in a rather unconventional way, in so far as there are two so-called 'hobs' into which mold inserts have to be - well - inserted. The molds made up of those hobs with their inserts are not working in standard molding machines. Is this correct, or not? - Isn't what I just described the primary reason so few models were reissued by X-El, rather than molds being incomplete? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but more than a few people have not suceeded to combine the mold pieces in a useable way. What makes you sure that you will succeed? Please understand that the latter questions are just based on mixed information I have from various sources. I may sound a tad impatient, but I wanted to ask these questions for the better part of 20 years now and might be overly excited to potentially finally have found the person who can answer them. I do understand that you have quite a few advances to pay before anything gets rolling. What I wrote intitially is meant to be thaken seriously. I am willing and prepared to pay for the models now. I have paid and then waited years for models to arrive when Seville was still porducing X-ELs, so this is nothing new for me. I repeat, I have the money available now and would be prepared to place a paid pre-order.
  18. Yes, Future is called Kleer in the UK, it's exactly the same stuff and I use it a lot. Many thanks for the research you did witht he Design master stuff, I might give it a try. And many, many thanks to all for your wonderful tips. I knew other people must have run into this problem before me. For those who are interested why I raised the question at this time, the case in point is actually that 1:18 scale Maisto Dodge I'm reworking. It has a red interior. In the olden days I had a simple solution for model kits molded in red - paint them red. This is the first time I actually want to change the colour of red plastic.
  19. That's almost worth a 'where do you build your models?' thread. I know a guy who has a travelling occupation and builds kits in hotel rooms. A late friend of mine worked for the railway and built models while on duty in the signal box. But in the sleeper of a truck? I'm amazed. Honestly amazed.
  20. Tell ya guys, there are a million ways to completely devalue a pristine vintage plastic kit within seconds. And I know a lot about that.
  21. OK, maybe IPMS is indeed targeted too much to people who think wars are beautiful and don't last long enough. In Europe, model car shows are often tied in with real car shows, or rather 'meetings'. There are enough car crazy folks in Switzerland. Maybe it would be worth trying to contact custom car and hot rod clubs? Here is a list of some clubs in Switzerland: http://www.uscc.ch/de/index.php?file=links.php&titel=Clubs%20in%20der%20Schweiz&adv=norm&teilerg=ch
  22. Yes, same with the Hybrids, like the Prius. If you are all out for polar-bear-friendly motoring, you are getting branded with totally stupid looking machines so all the world can see how advanced and modern your mindset is. Entirely btw., electricity is of course created by magic.
