  1. You cannot use the Continental chassis for the Futura because the Conti is approx 1/32 scale and the Futura is approx 1/25. Unless of course you fancy upping the scale and scratch building, bit of a project but worth it in my opinion. John
  2. Someone explaine please? no cryptic clues. Train wrecks? F1? Thanks, John
  3. I'm off to Beauliue Autojumble(a UK swapmeet) in September, one of the vendors should have a copy available there. Thanks,John.
  4. Thanks for posting this, I can see how the guys at Tamiya got it wrong. Is that P at an angle or is that another thing wrong? As no one models a 1/12 Aston or Gurney Weslake engine I will have to stick with the Chevrolet Which book or magazine is the picture scanned from please. Thanks, John
  5. The Tamiya Lola Surtee's is a coupe but the example of how this colour(BRG) is missreprisented is perfectly shown here as these also look a shade of blue. Thanks for the post, J
  6. A good source is Street Rodder Magazine from May 1976. This featured the big three but only the Chev that you are interested in. I think there was a small picture of the Mercury but no interior. This mag sells for a fair price when they come up on the 'Bay' but you should find one Another copy (cannot remeber the issue)had a big feature on the Mercury when Brian Setzer of the Stray Cats band bought it. I believe he had it re-chopped and finished to a far better quality than when used for filming as the car used was fairly stock with just a bit of de-chroming ,chopped and some wheel covers. The chop was awfull on the original. I dont have it but someone made a diecast of this car with this chop and it looks totally wrong, that is to say an equal chop front and rear. The 2CV would be pretty standard I guess. There are other magazines but they deal mainly with the coupe, though you may find other still shots featuring the other cars in the background or on set Hope that is some use, John
  7. Well the way I'm going about things at the moment I think I might need some wisdom teeth put IN
  8. As Lordairgtr pointed out, BRG was never a single colour or shade. Check out archive colour photo's or film and you will see some really light and some darker shades. I believe this is general for all the racing colours when they used to be international like French Blue, Italian Red etc. In an earlier thread I noted that the Tamiya Lola T70 box ilustration was blue but the actual colour should have been BRG. I have see the car in a couple of colour photo's and it does look blue but with a hint of green. Has anyone else noticed this? Cheers, J
  9. I have the top pic, the red one. Is that a MkIII? It is an old built up(sorry, no pic yet) liscenced to a UK company called Palitoy I think. Was this an original Johan? or something similar? A very impresive kit even though it is a basic curbside witha little underbody detail. Thanks, J
  10. Jarius I love it ! I can see Tom Daniels influence for sure. There is a Paddy Wagon hiding there I know it, one of my favourite TD kits. J
  11. The Monogram Mecedes 540K is also in a great series. Great box art on all the Mono classic. That Mercedes is pure Cruella DeVille J
  12. Don't know if anyone has had this discussion so here goes. Like a book with an exciting cover, box art pursuaded me which model I would buy next Who in your opinion is the greatest/favoutire box artist and what model. Models can vary IE Aurora's Horror stars(Dracula, Mummy Black lagoon etc, Monograms early Hot Rod series(Yellow Jacket, Blue Beetle etc) AMT Annuals, Revells Funny Car series, Tom Daniel, you know the score here guys and gals. And do you have a favourite artist? I dont know many so I may learn something here. Here is my fave list of boxes. If you know an artist missing let me know who he/she is please. Thanks, John. My All time fave box art of ANY kit .......AIRFIX B17G Flying Fortress. Fantastic artwork by Roy Cross. On a bomb run, engine on fire, guns blazing this has the lot to tempt anyone into modeling. 2nd fave and favourite car box Hot Rod Kit.....Li'l Coffin(1970s version). The model with the scary scene of dead trees and houses and the so CooooooL skeleton leaning on the car. Artist unknown 3rd fave is the 1957 Revell Cadillac Eldorado Brougham. Artist Jack Lynnwood? If I had to pick a moden box artist I will go with the Japanese guy that signs himself Okamoto
  13. Well it would have been around 1965, DW Dwyers owned a chain of shops in the new town of Basildon Essex(UK). Their flagship store was a REAL toy/hobby shop everything was in there. Model kits, railways, slot cars,Dinky and Corgi die casts, Barbies and baby dolls, games and toys for girls and boys of all ages. But it was the window display that was to be marveled at. As well as at least one example of almost every toy they sold, the centre piece was a small selection of made up model cars. I didn't know what kits were as a 6 year old but what took my eye was the mighty Deusenburg kit by Monogram and a small E Type Jaguar by Airfix. We(me and mum) went in! I wanted the Jag but when the lady in the shop said it had to be made I settled on a Corgi car of some sort. What atracted me to these cars was the shop had employed someone to make a few cars ships and planes so you could see what they looked like, thats why I thought they came like that. Initially it was the box art of that Deusenburg that attracted me to it, as well as seeing those fantastic Airfix boxes for aircraft painted my Roy Cross.(see my new topic) Alas its all gone. Toys * Us is the only toy shop in town now, no one has time to build models for display in these stores. They are just toy supermarkets stocking say 12 different kits and 6 examples of each, same for Action Man(GI Joe) Barbie, and even the good old die cast cars. John
  14. HiYa Hawk! WoW, real or model? I missed the tyre bulges, the only thing that gives it away for me are the 1:1 leaves . Great builds and welcome, John
  15. Hi George, you are right, but I wish some of those fools would spend their money on my kits when I sell them. John
  16. Ok,it's a diffent type of car but this is very remeniscent of Ed Iskenderians Turtle deck T. I love it
  17. If its down to eBay we could do a best percentage over true value. I sold a Pyro 1st edition 52 Chevy fas back for £80. yes thats correct, a US collector said I would/should get around $5-$10. I sure would like a few more like that but I'm not going to chance my money on Pyro's John
  18. Hi, Just curious as to what is the highest price ever paid for a model car kit, what was it and where sold? auction house? eBay or a staright sale. This idea came up as I said anything worth real money would not be sold on eBay. I base this on some Monet paintings for sale in auction this week. Over to you. Thanks, John
  19. Back at the birth of the automobile only the real well off could afford a car, in the UK the goverment is pushing up fuel taxes and vehicle taxes to the point that only the well off will eventually be able to afford to drive a fair sized car, taking us back to our beginnings. A friend with a Range Rover now pays £440 per year in road tax alone. The idea is to get us back onto public transport but when a rail ticket for a journey of 30 miles for work purpose can cost £34 you can see how difficult it is to get rid of your vehicle. A friend (1person) is going on holiday, a distance of 240miles and will use approx £60 worth of fuel. A train ticket there and back will be £77 for 1 person. For a family of 4 that would be over £280 for a trip that will cost under a £100 in a car, then you have the convenience of being able to travel when and where you want when you get there. So it's car or public transport, You decide! or rather the £ or $ in your pocket must decide. 4 Cylinder cars? we have had them for years We sure need to do something about cars on the road, our little island is getting swamped so smaller cars are the answer but I sure will miss the old big cars comfort.
  20. Another from the classic funny years. I remember reading a feature in Hot Rod, how you would cheer for your favourite. Be it driver, or if you owned a ford you cheered the Mustangs, if dad drove a Chevy it might be the Vega's you rooted for or the Cuda's etc. The fact that most ran a Chrysler derived mill was of no real importance. In the UK a good Funny car field consisted of around a dozen cars total, so we just cheered whoever ran I have this in my stash so i'll build this one one day Thanks, John
  21. This was my dream car, still is but this one is no longer with us. Ended its days as a doner for a 59 Car was as rotten as a bad apple, had a shot hydro from a hearse, raplaced that with a 60 box that also burnt out, then the shells turned in the block, I rebuilt the engine and it sang like a bird. Could not afford to repair the transmission, then my son was born and nappies were a little more important than my dream car. Oh well, I built this as some sort of cosolation(why arn't there any crying smiley's) Thanks, John
  22. I had a friend now sadly deceased, who had a 59 Ragtop Cadillac. He took his new wife on honeymoon to Cornwall in it and ran out of gas(petrol), blocked the lanes for hrs. The AA,a British repair and relay service, brought him some fuel, 2 gallons as opposed to the normal 1 because there was no service station in the imediate area. My Cad, I had thought of adding a set of sharks teeth by the front wheel arch just for laughs. I tripped and bashed my head on that tailfin tip! hurt like hell, had to get rid of it in case I reversed into anybdy. I did not wish to make anyone into a Kaddy Kabab The pic was taken 20 years ago on a friends farm Did you check my signature? I thought of adding 'When Dinosaurs ruled the earth'
  23. I have a few older builts that have not suffered yet, they were built in the 90s. Some are older models others fairly newish, so what if anything can be done to prevent this happening. Do new kits also suffer from this? Thanks, John
  24. Yo! thanks all. Looks like a trip to the pizza shop is all I will be able to afford If I sell these . Maybee sell a few more for the big trip. Well at least I can have some fun and learn a bit on the way. Yes I have sold some stuff on the bay. I once got £80 for Pyro 52 Chevy!!!!!(thats around $150 at todays exchange rate) Thanks, John
