61 Impala from the 24 Hour Build Thread!

I got it figured out now. What happened was....I had to repaint the roof because a tiny spot of orange came through when I color sanded it. So I taped it off and reshot the roof. That came out nicely. However, I then threw it back in the dehydrator with all the tape still on it. THAT was my big mistake! The paint was still too soft and the heat made the tape kind of melt into the paint surface! I should have known not to do that as I didn't even really need to use the dehydrator because I had shot the roof with Krylon gloss black. And that stuff dries fast all on it's own. Duhhh.... Oh well, learned something and won't repeat that mistake again! -

Well...I'm disappointed...my build is screwed by paint problems. I had this sucker all planned out. I had some Cobracolors acrylic lacquer kandy to do the orange but the moment I sprayed it, it developed the same problems I had with the 62 Corvette.....round spots that looked like fisheyes. There is nothing in my shop even remotely associated with any silicones and I washed the body with automotive paint degeaser/cleaner before painting! I just think my stash of Cobracolors paint is just too old. So I had to resort to painting with some enamel orange I had on hand. I used an old can of TruMatch #7 orange which was a good color. It went on fine with no spotting. But of course even with the dehydrator it never cured quite enough to work with. When I taped off to repaint the roof I got all kinds of trouble when I pulled the tape off. You just don't have enough time in a 24 hour build to use any paints that aren't fast drying! So no big deal. I like how this was coming out so well I'm going to let it cure enough so I can just sand down those spots and repaint. I still had a lot of fun! And next year I'll be better prepared paint wise! http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki -
61 Impala from the 24 Hour Build Thread!

Last year I did stay up all night and work straight through. That's the aim of this event. But in a lot of cases there are groups of guys (and girls) who get together at one persons house and build as a group. They have TV on, the 24 hours of Daytona, food, beverages, etc. I was on my own at home so I took a break around 2 AM. -

That's it for tonight....I'm saying Uncle. It's supposed to be fun and it's not when you're sitting here in pain. And right now my lower back is screaming at me to go lay down. Almost 14 hours straight here at the bench! Sleep for a while then try to get back at it. Thanks for the support guys! -

12 hours! Halfway through but I don't know if I'm halfway on the model yet! Got the black roof and side panel trim painted. I used flat black because it goes on much easier and dries faster. And I'm gonna clear coat the whole thing anyway. I dooubt if I will have time to add the foil but we'll see in a few hours... http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki Basics of the engine are done..... Got the orange applied. Letting that harden as much as I can in the dehydrator before I tape it off and spray the black. When I shoot the clear I'm going to chance it and put some pearl powder in it! Can't really go any lower without MAJOR mods...and not enough time for that. I have it as low as I can get it now. I removed the stub axle from the front kingpins, drilled new holes and glued in some .095 OD aluminum tubing. The hubs from the wheels off the 62 kit have these little .062 steel stub axles. I changed the location from the middle of the kingpin to as near the top as I dared... And in the rear, the tires are already up against the top of the inner wheel well. Which is something I really dislike because if the car were real there would be no room for any suspension travel at all. Luckily this is just a model! Bt it's sitting pretty low and nice and level anyways... http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki Here's a closeup of the relocated axle location. It used to be in the middle... http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki Here's what I mean about the rear tire right up against the wheel well....without making the wheel well bigger I just can't go any lower! http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki And here's the front spindle with the modified axle near the top of the kingpin.... http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki -

Tom those wheels and tires that I'm NOT using are from the Revell 32 Ford 3 window kit. One thing about silver paint...it's a great tool to show you the error of your ways! In other words...I gotta fix some errors in my bodywork! LOL I attempted to fill in the area where the front fender accent trim pieces are supposed to go and it's not filled enough! That's ok...I'll fix it with some medium thick superglue and some zip kicker! http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki And I totally missed the mold lines at the rear quarters! Duhhhh! http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki -

I'm gonna try my best at doing the paint just like the one in my inspiration photo. We'll see! LOL -

Aaaaand we're off! First a mockup to see how it looks. I'm not usually a fan of the big wheels/rubber band tires look but I do like these. Probably because the tires do have some sidewall to them! Time to pull all the tape off the suspension components and get to painting this thing! http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki -
Well I decided to tackle the Lindberg 61 Chevy Impala for my 24 hour build. Here is my inspiration and what I'm shooting for. This color is Dupont Prowler Orange Pearl and being unable to obtain a small amount of that I'm going with Cobracolors Kandy Tangerine over a silver base... http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki I'll be using this kit: http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki I'm going to use the wheels and tires from this kit: http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki And here they are! I know they're not exact but close enough. And I'm not going to try to replicate the car...just go towards the overall look of that car. http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki And here are the parts ready to go! I know we're not supposed to cut parts off the trees yet but I already had these parts cut off a long time ago but never built the car. Disregard those 4 tires there...they're not being used. http://www.fotki.com'>Hosted on Fotki

I'm betting it is or at least is part of...the stand for the guitar....

That Anglia kit was...and still is...a sonofagun to build wasn't it? I have one going now that I kinda put away for a while to rest my wits!
-
True that. But what i meant was those glaring inaccuracies.. (not that the dual system wasn't glaring) Like...an altered wheelbase, or a nose that's sky high or no cooling system at all...things like that. At least that 55 isn't grossly wrong!

Poor 'ol Barris needed some PoliGrip badly! -
Actually Harry, although it has it's inaccuracies to be sure, this thing is a lot closer to passing as a gasser than a great many other models posted here that claimed to be a "Gasser"...
-
John, I agree with Tim...leave it alone. We all have made mistakes...heaven knows I have made PLENTY of them. Now that your skills both in building and researching are better, maybe one day you'll be inspired enough to build another more accurate one. If not...so be it! And Tim...47 years ago??? Yikes! Seriously though it's kinda cool that you still have pics of those early builds.

Love this! Nice paint and interior work!

John...not to take away from your skill at building because it looks great, but may I ask you about the engine? You have small block Chevrolet valve covers on what appear to be maybe Oldsmobile cylinder heads? How did you happen to use that engine instead of the Hemi that the real car ran?
-
Very VERY nice!

Dang that's nice! Love precision like that!
