  1. i use dot 3 brake fluid. submerge the whole body in a container with a cover, let it soak for 2-3 days. remove it and wash thourghly with soap and water and a toothbrush. use dish soap for the grease cutting action. removes just about any finish. dont know if it work for resin parts
  2. this is a great technique as well. i use this method at work when im only clearing part of a panel.(lower portion, breaking in the body line.) like ledsled said the trick is to pull the tape immediately after spraying, the edge rolls over itself instead of making a hard break at a tape line. making for a much smoother edge.
  3. first, welcome to mcm! on to the paint, there are a few different factors to consider with tape lifting first is tape thickness, the thinner the tape the less chance of a lift. when separating colors or edges i like to use 3M fine line tape. its very flexible and very thin like a vinyl decal. it doesnt build a ton of paint up at the tape edge which is what will cause the lift. next would be the amount of paint you are putting on the tape edge again less is more. sometimes there is no way to achieve 1 or 2 so a nice new #11 blade lightly along the edge of the tape will slice the paint deep enough to let the tape come up but not deep enough to get into the plastic. hope this helped in your building. any more questions feel free to ask. im an automotive painter by trade so i usually have the solution to paint/body isseus. jim
  4. went with the orange.
  5. i really like transfer paper from the vinyl sign shop guy. paint ideas try to shoot true fire on something this small or silver base, candy orange with these either way it will be orange and black. opinions please
  6. theres the difference, im down here in this dust hole of a basement. i figured with the updraft any dirt or crud has a better chance of being removeable or repairable if it lands on the bottom of the car or whatever im painting instead of the roof or middle of the door.
  7. but doesnt it also pull dirt and dust directly across your subject? 100% more lights. parts and cost range hood-free from construction demo cardboard-free (most body shops will give you a big parts box, if you ask. may not be on the day you ask but you never know.) 2x4-$5 lowes 4 cfls-$8 at kroger misc screws, tape, paint-$10?(if all bought new)
  8. homemade paint booth i just finished mine this morning, just need to make a trip to sprawl mart for some lighting. its a discarded range hood, the fan is awesome but the light is nf. it is ducted with a dryer tube loosely stuffed with furnace filter material to a dryer vent placed in a window opening. used 2x4s for the base and a large piece of cardboard the the sides and doors. the tape holding the doors shut will be replaced with magnets. 30x18x34 there will be vent holes in the bottom with a filter for an intake and there will be a filter for the exhaust too. the fan is 2 speed but i think ive seen them with 3 speeds as well. i will seal all seams with clear packing tape. some may laugh, but its mine, it was cheap and being an automotive painter who uses a full size booth on a daily basis i know what it take to make it work right and well.
