  6. The paint test colors are sweet. Great choice on middle one. For future reference, I've had some success using Kustom Kolor paint... at least on my spoon tests. I'm about to shoot some on a '64 Goat. Here are some of my results. I used Duplicolor Primer for all of the tests. I used MM Brass Metalizer, Duplicolor Silver, and KK Silver as base coats. The two tone samples are a custom mix of Kustom Kolors with Duplicolor Red for the separation line. All of the clears are Krylon Crystal Clear. The two on the far left are over 8 months old and have not wrinkled or cracked. You can make use of that Kustom Kolor paint on a future project.

  12. I have one more question. Will filters in series drop my psi to the airbrush enough to require any compensating increase in the dialed in setting from the regulator. In other words, if I normally spray at 25 psi and the filters reduce the psi to the airbrush by 10 psi, I assume that I would have to increase the regulator setting to 35 psi. Practically, I don't know if there is a way to know for certain how much the filters reduce the psi. I'm just wondering if I have to adjust my preferred settings on the regulator if I use filters in series. Maybe its something that I should not be concerned about.
  13. Lonewolf, Thanks for the reply. I have a better understanding of why the moisture occurs. I looked on the Advance Auto Parts and Sears websites and didn't find the moisture traps. I also called the local Advance store and they don't carry it. But, I found a "moisture and oil filter combo" at http://www.eastwood.com/moisture-and-oil-f....html?reltype=2 Is this the type of setup that you're talking about?
  14. Thanks for the responses. I talked to someone at Coast Airbrush and she recommended using quick connect fittings for the Iwata and Badger with the Iwata in line filter. The Iwata filter screws directly into the airbrush. Don, I'm curious about your suggestion because it would certainly save me some money. But, would locating the filter so close to the compressor catch any more moisture than the moisture trap, which is located on the compressor?
  15. I have Iwata Eclipse (double action) and Badger 350 (single action) airbrushes. I use 6' cords for each. The Badger is used primarily for primer and clear coats and the Iwata for everything else. I use a Badger piston compressor with a moisture trap on the compressor. I've noticed a little moisture coming out off the cord when I've used it to blow dust particles of items to be painted or my airbrush cups. It appears that I need an in line moisture trap. The Iwata has a 1/8" thread and the Badger has a 1/4" thread. Is anyone aware of an in line filter that I can use for both the Iwata and the Badger so I don't have to buy 2. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  20. I bought a bunch of this stuff and I've experimented with Kustom Kolors "Airbrush Reducer," "Thinner," and cheap lacquer thinner and gotten good results with all three. The "Airbrush Reducer" seems to behave like a lacquer with a relatively fast drying time and less gloss than the "Thinner." I've seen others recommend the "Thinner" for brush painting because of the slower drying time. The trick is to know which clears you can use. Kustom Kolors "Acrylic Clear" will craze when sprayed over KK paint thinned with KK "Thinner." I use Krylon Crystal Clear over KK thinned paint. Also, the metallic KK colors are very thick and must be reduced significantly, as much a 4:1 thinner to paint ratio. The psi will depend on the viscosity of the paint and your personal preference. I've used a range of 19 psi to 35 psi to KK paints. Experiment on spoons with the combination that you want to use before shooting it on your model. I've used duplicolor primer under KK paint with no problems.

  23. I received mine today and, as usual, I love it. Dave, congratulations on your well deserved Retrovette feature. I must say that I find the criticism of the MCM and SAE interesting. I'm particularly glad to see that Harry responded to the suggestions and criticism with a receptive ear and genuine interest. I'm a fairly new builder and I subscribe to both MCM and SAE. I think there is enough room in the hobby for 2 magazines and I enjoy reading both. I'm attempting to back build my collection of both magazines as well as Plastic Fanatic and Car Modeler through Ebay.
  24. I've used Kustom Kolor thinner and reducer, both recommended by KK, and cheap lacquer thinner. The recommended thinner, I don't remember the no., is slow drying and gives a good gloss finish. The thinner is also used for brush painting due to the slow drying time. You should not use Kustom Kolor brand REDUCER coats over KK brand THINNED paint because it will craze. Also, don't apply the KK clear over KK THINNED paint... it will craze. Apparently, the KK Reducer and Clear are hotter than the thinner. You can get a great finish if you know what to use and what not to use. I suggest Krylon Crystal Clear, an acrylic, for your clear coats to avoid compatibility issues.
