I really don't know where to begin. I could tell you lurid tales , or I could tell ya horror stories of the "OLE SOUTH" or tell ya hoe "Inventive " things were in telebishion , yes Dennis. First I was born here in Richmond Va. My folks were of modest means and I attended public schools . My father worked on televisions to supplant his meager income from I B M . He repaired clocks . yes I B M once made time clocks kids and Typewriters too, remember them ? We were one of the first families to even have a T V. Our attic was filled with neighbors televisions all the time too. meanwhile the old man drove Pontiacs! Yep, had a 51 Chieftain with a straight Eight ! My Godfather had a Pontiac Deluxe two door with an Eight . My next door neighbors had a Henry J! Meanwhile there was a guy who had a 1940 Ford Coupe that lived just down the street too. That Flat head would just purr too! Even in the 1960's my father had a succession of nicer used cars . Cars like a Pontiac Safari Wagon, 59. 57 Cadillac Sedan De ville with Air conditioning !Also he had a 56 Buick Road master. I worked in a Lincoln Mercury body shop. I owned a 61 Bel-Aire a 61 Corvair and briefly a 59 Biscayne. Paid ten whole dollars for it too! Then too , there was the "bad ole south" yep! I grew up seeing a Black child have to wet his pants as the Whites only bathroom was out of order in a G C Murphy downtown . I also saw "Negroes " as they were having to go out to the back of a Howard Johnson restaurant only to be served badly too. I didn't like it then , don't care for it now . I grew up in a kind of mixed race neighbor hood. And yes, I'm Jefferson Davis cousin too. Richmond still holds onto it's past with an questionable grip. Why I continue to stay here is really anyone's guess. I still have elderly relatives that I help to take care of here . Still, I loathe and despise this god awful place . Ed Shaver

WHY DO YOU BUILD MODEL CARS?
Eshaver replied to E St. Kruiser50's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Fair question , fair answer . I'm a car person. I'm also an artist too but that's another story too for another time . My first model was a gift from the Richmond Ford motor company for me to build in a contest that they participating in with A M T in 1961. It started with a Ford Thunderbird convertible . Years later car building led to scratch building. Scratch building led to building "Prototypes of Gasoline Pumps'. That led to entering them in contests. Yes , I actually beat a couple of Star wars Models . Thats led to me building doll houses for others on occasion. Dave , I hope that answered you're question. Ed Shaver -

My most ambitious replica project ever!!
Eshaver replied to VW Dave's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I believe Ken said it better than I. I'm a parent too, i live for my son who is almost nine. He constantly tells me how he wants to be a wrecker driver like his Dad. Reminds me of the Willie Nelson song , Don't let yer Kids Grow Up to be Cowboys. Now ya'all sing that to the tune of don't let yer kids grow up to be Mechanics and drivers . One word of advice here Dave , spend "REAL" time with the child . Listen to him when he speaks , his fears are real to him and he really wants assurances that you care . Above all, never make a promise you aren't prepared to keep. Children absorb everything too! Ed Shaver -
What defines a rat rod?
Eshaver replied to Roadkill2525's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Dave May I step in a moment ? I only just saw everyones rant a few moments ago. First let me say that "Rat " rods were really not as popular as they really are thought of to day as they were in the day. Let me take you back to Los Angles 1948. Barris bros were doing a land office business during the time as they really couldn't put out "QUALITY " paint work in the time needed as too many were trying to get their rides painted all at once . It was said that they started to tell customers that the Primer had to "SET " for a period before the paint would adhere properly. Now that was Kinda true due to the fact that during that time , you had two paints , Straight enamel and of course Nitrocelulose Laquer, Both were questionable as opposed to todays paints. Now you had straight laquer too but that too was a pain in the u KNOW WHAT to polish . I'm old enough to have worked in the day in the old shops too. I learned to lead from the masters and trust me I thank them today for what I know how to do. I remember Plastic body filler when it first came out and trust me on this one it was well, hit and miss stuff. paints were the same way. The fact that we have enamels with catalytic hardners is a blessing ! Waterbourne laquers , hey ! It's no wonder that "Rat " rods were prevalent then . Now I grew up here in Central Virginia . having primer on a car around here is murder on body work as the elements will soon soak under and destroy what ever you have done in weeks . Sure we drove around in Primered cars. Yep we would do that and sure enough, we would be re doing the same work over again all summer long too. Mabye that will help answer youre querry.... Hummm, uh I would add fenders as even in California where vehicle equipment laws are vague . Outside of that you might want to add a towing bar across the lower portion of the bed to allow you to actually tow a vehicle . Right now you only have the necessary equipment to extract a vehicle from a ditch. Over all, the idea is great and thanks for sharing it with us ! Ed Shaver

Kevin I lived in Laurel Canyon in Holly wood in 1973. I know the Griffith park area very well. I would wander through and was stunned that such an area existed in such a highly densely populated maze of freeways and perversion. I'll be praying for the fire to go to Will Rodgers State park. Hey cant burn too well as it's too wet there ! Ed Shaver

Photography copyright query.
Eshaver replied to HotRodaSaurus's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Robert, Thank you for you're words here ! really I have a some what similar situation as I was the photographer for the Book Check the Oil by Scott Anderson. Also Jack Sim the Author for the Book Gasoline Pump Identification guide is suffering from just what you are disusing too. Go over to Shoptalk@oldgas.com and see Jack's numerous contributions to us all. Jack also has a Web page , but I can't remember what it is . Anyway his work was ripped off worse than mine was . Anderson simply published the book Check the oil and didn't include me in the Bibliography as was our original agreement . He just put a blanket note in the back and said he bought everything from Webber's .Well, I knew the owner of Webber's and his wife too. That's O K , I've got more than enough material to do a book on retail gas stations and I sure don't need anyone else s stuff. Ed Shaver -
