  1. I hadn't considered it Mike but, it's not a bad idea. After your suggestion I looked through my collection of Pearl Ex. The only ones I have in my stash today are Interference Gold, Aztec Gold, Reflex Violet, and Pearl White. The Interference Gold is more along the lines of a white gold, where the Pearl White is of course pure white. I don't know if I'll use any of them but the Interference Gold over the HoK Snowhite could be interesting. I think I'll shoot a scrap piece of plastic to see how it looks before committing to the entire model. Thanks for the suggestion. Dave
  2. A Lyle Willits build that isn't rodded? Did someone check to see that the earth is still rotating on it's axis? I must admit my friend that your build here has me seriously considering building my own 210. You know as well as I do that there will be 100s of 150s on contest and NNL tables this year but very few 210s. This is one very cool project and the fact that you took it back to factory stock in even cooler.
  3. Well boys and girls we're back for the swim in the Purple Pond, none the worse for it. The bodywork that was affected by the CSC has been repaired and the base coat has been applied and has "gassed out." We are suppose to have temperatures in the high 60s low 70s this weekend so time to shoot the HoK Snowhite Pearl. I did however take a suggestion from CB and added color to the wheel covers. Actually, I remembered that in the pre-paint version of the '58 Edsel Pacer the wheel covers were painted. Just so happens someone put a couple of them up for auction on eModel Cars and at around $11 shipping included, I didn't figure I could go wrong. Hosted on Fotki
  4. Tom, isn't the NNL East the same time as ours here in Portland April 18th? It looks like you have your work cut out for you. I hope you have a good supply of Monster Energy Drink. I would have said AMP but then would have people thinking I was a Dale Jr fan, and that's not likely to EVER happen.
  5. Perhaps I should have labeled it as a "Work in Progress". One where we'll put the money into it's go and we'll worry about the show later. I see them all the time at Cruise-ins, they pull into the lot and every one thinks "Why on earth would they even consider bringing that in here?" Then they open the hood and and everyone goes, "Isn't that pretty!" The owner has a big smile even thought the exterior looks like 20 miles of BAD dirt road.
  6. The build is completed follow the link to the Under Glass topic: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19214
  7. It's finally completed. It was a bit of a challenge, when you see pristine paint it's difficult to get your mind around the fact that you're going to Intentionally sand trough it to another layer. Thank you to everyone for your encouragement through this build, especially to Jon Ferrer over on TRaK. Without Jon's advice I doubt the build would be anything but another stalled project. Without further ado here is "The Rust Bucket": I wanted the interior to have character like the exterior. The seats and door panels were painted with Krylon Make it Suede to give them some texture. Then pieces of tape were cut to size to give the look of torn seats being held together with duct tape. The engine bay ended up with the Flat Head from the Revell Good Guys '40 Ford Coupe. The speed parts were used for the build with additional pieces from Parts by Parks, Detail Master, Model Car Garage and my favorite source for Flat Head parts Replica and Miniatures Company of Maryland. Hosted on Fotki For the first attempt at weathering I am pleased with the results, but figure there are things that would make it even better. Your questions and comments are welcome as always.
  8. OK, just so it's official my friend, you have lost your mind. That being said this has to be just about the coolest way out in left field build I have ever seen.
  9. Is selling your First Born an acceptable way to get the money to buy one of these? Granted she's 32 now but she's still the first born. LOL
  10. John, that is insane. The worst part is I have thought about doing something like that with one of the other Panels kits. But you need some serious Kieth Black Hemi with a triple intake snorkel on top of a 14-71 blower.
  11. Getting rid of the wood grain paneling and the molded in headlight is about the kindest thing you could do with that body. For as many great parts as AMT put into that kit they sure missed with the body. You did a great job smoothing it out, looks like it has a real chance of being a nice rod.
  12. BTW, Dave ol buddy ol pal, thanks for the providing the 1:1 inspiration for the AMT/Revell 3 window '34. I have an AMT '34 5 Window Coupe that has had the roof replaced with the Revell Snap '34 3 Window Coupe. I hadn't found a suitable home for it. Looks like the wheels will be the biggest obstacle to the build. But, hey what's life without a little challenge now and then.
  13. Revell issued this in 2 different colors the first release was molded in white and had decals for Blony bubble gum, Ben-Hur Drip Coffee and Olympic Laundry. The second issue (molded in the bright blue) was the Deluxe Kit with paint, glue and a brush with decals for the Deuue Bros Circus. Hosted on Fotki I remember the white version in the hobby shops, but I don't remember if the blue version came from Wally World or a LHS. Either way the kit is pretty descent, the only thing that seemed to me to be an issue was the suspension causes the thing to ride to high. Other then that the rest of the kit is pretty accurate compared to the 1:1s that I've seen. This seems to be a kit that a lot of us have and have stuffed into the back of the closet being it's something of a limited subject. Perhaps with this build under way we'll see more of them built.
  14. That is one thing about this kit it becomes a BIG blank canvas. It's one of those kits where the only limitation is your imagination. Unfortunately, it was a somewhat limited appeal subject. I don't think Revell did themselves any favors by issuing it the "Deluxe Kit" BRIGHT Blue version. At that point it went from a viable kit to toy status. Not necessarily how you want to present a subject to adult modelers.
  15. When I saw the heading I was trying to figure out who made a 1/48 '56 Ford. Of course my mind was thinking along the lines of Victoria not F100. I'm trying to remember if I've ever seen one of these kits build let alone turned into a nice looking Street Rod. Pretty cool stuff.
  16. They are reissues of the Boyds Smoothster, Vantastic etc from the late '90s. To the best of my knowledge that are straight reissues. They're not bad kits, just one off customs. They always made great parts kits as they do have some pretty cool suspension bits and pieces. The entire frames and engine fit under Monograms '36 Ford 3 Window perfectly. My LHS has had them on the shelf for the past 60 days or so. They're no more of a mover now then they were in the '90s.
  17. I'd completely forgotten about the '57 210 from Hollywood Knights. Thanks guys!!!!!!!! you have no idea how hard I'm trying to NOT start building a 210. You're making it very difficult indeed.
  18. Same thing would have applied here Dave. Unfortunately, I didn't pre-fit the engine prior to yesterday, and there was no way I was going to go back and trim out the sides of the engine compartment at this point in the game. So, now I have to find a home for the '50 Flathead with Arduns. Tough problem to have. May be time to scratch an injector manifold and load it into a rail frame. Good thing AMT has the double dragster kit listed for reissue. I think I have photos of Jimmy's car at the End of the World Cruise from 7-8 years ago. If it wasn't his car it was a good copy of it.
  19. Not sure of when the second try will be, but I do know that it's a lot more fun then spending hours color sanding paint to get it mirror smooth. I have a "Beverly Hillbilly's" Buick body that looks like the perfect candidate for a severe weathering. There are however a few others on the bench that need to be completed before that even gets started.
  20. Had one of those Ah, S**T moments with the build today. I had planned to use the Flat Head from the '50 Ford Pickup. Had the engine totally assembled, dropped it into the engine bay and guess what? It doesn't fit, to use the '50s engine with the Ardun heads would require major surgery of both front fenders. So, it was a quick retreat to Plan B. Seeing how the '40 Ford Good Guys Coupe gave up so much of it's suspension for the chassis it also gets to give up it's flat head and speed parts to rescue the build as well. All in all, this has been a fun project, the build itself was no real big deal the finish was where the challenge came about. As someone who judges contests I now have better appreciation for those entries that aren't polished out and shiny. I'm hoping to have this finished by the weekend so stay tuned. George you are correct about the caps and trim rings they along with the rest of the chrome will be getting a black wash to tone them down. Thank you all for your kind words and comments. And DAVE it will be finished in time for the NNL, what are friends for but to give you cr*p.
  21. I'm glad you took something home besides the big trophy from the Portland Roadster Show. JUst give you a hard time. THe Willys looks killer. That should give them a run for their money on the WMBR. Fletch
  22. One final update before the big finish. After this build I have a whole lot more respect for those who finish a build all weathered and rusted up. Hosted on Fotki So far I have used 4 different weathering systems if you will. Rustall, Floquil Railroad Colors Rust and Grimy Black, the Rust Antiquing kit from Micheal's and Tamiya Weathering Master Set B. The last that I plan to do to complete the weathering is to use a black wash to blend the different shades of rust. Rust up the bumpers, and some road grime to the wheels and tires. The plan for under the hood is a flat head with Arduns and tri-carb setup from the '50 pickup. wire up the engine bay a little as the battery sits in a pretty prominent location. Throw the interior tub together do a little weathering there and call it done.
  23. The Pacific NW NNL Model Car Fest is just 4 weeks away, on Saturday April 18th. Awards for People's Choice Junior and Senior. Theme Junior and Senior. The Charlie James Memorial Award given to the Best Classic. The Bob Paeth Memorial Award given to the Best/Most outrageous Custom. And the SABA Pick, better know as we just thought it was way to cool to not give an award to. A make and take for the youngsters. Clinics scheduled so far, Ron Martinolich covering the many kinds of paint/fingernail polish and their applications. Yours truly demonstrating the technique "how to chop and reassembly a '40 Ford coupe in less then 60 minutes without breaking a sweat". Still in the works a metal working clinic handled by one of our winning builders from the Bob Paeth Portland Classic. She was a jeweler for many years before retiring (we figured we'd better learn her secrets as she kicks our butts with her metal work). If you plan to be in the Portland area April 18th stop by and say Hi.
  24. F1s new rule has got to be one of the most idiotic things that governing board has ever come up with. Granted drivers need an insensitive to win. But to put the entire emphasis on winnig and not overall consistency throughout the season is insane. The idea if two drivers happen to win the same number of races to then go to the points system to determine the champion. Makes about as much sense as at the end of the regular season in Baseball give the pennant over to the team with the most number of wins. If we should happen to have 2 teams with the same number of win/losses then we'll use some sort tie breaker to determine the champion. This all started at the end of last season when Hamilton beat Massa by a single point for the championship. Just because Massa won 6 races and Hamilton 5, if you're not there at the end to cross the finish line who cares. If your car can't finish a race for what ever reason, why should you be the champion over the guy who was there at the end more then you were. The fact that the season has once again been shortened and the fact that it's on at 1:30 AM here in the states, I expect the viewership to drop. The fact that there is not a single North American date on the schedule doesn't help matters either. Do the powers that be in F1 expect the fans to spend the money to attend an event, say in the last 7 races of the season, where someone has already won 8 races and is effectively already been crowned champion? What would be the point? Your driver has ZERO chance of winning the Championship. I think that if this season turns out to be a run away by one single driver the fans will show their displeasure with this system with their pocketbooks. I have been a fan of F1 for several years and as a fan I don't see where this "NEW" system is anything but a really bad idea brought on by a bad idea on how to be politically correct. My $0.02 worth.
  25. David makes an excellent point here. While I completely agree with the idea that we need to support the After Market Cottage industry, I'm not sure this is a sound business plan. Granted, shipping a 10# printer back to the Manufacture in Europe is not cheap. What is Keven's plan if ALPS determines the printer has been used beyond it's rated duty cycle and voids the warranty? What happens then to the orders that have been paid for up front? For a business to not have a contingency plan for equipment failure is just looking for disaster. I have worked in the copier/printer industry for the past 20 years. From experience, Manufactures and service organizations look for the slightest thing to void a warranty. If a copier or printer is used beyond it's duty cycle or the improper media is used it will void a warranty in a heart beat. The one thing I can tell you form working in this industry is, the equipment never has a problems when it's sitting idle. But, when you need to fill an order, get that presentation ready etc, that's when it will fail. So, when you have a failure with a specialized piece of equipment like an ALPS printer, you can't just run to Kinko's to get them to run it on one of their machines. If the ALPS printers are truly this fragile, I'm not sure attempting to build a viable business around one is sound investment. While I love the idea that the product you get is fresh off the printer, not like Micro-Scale where 100s are screened at a single run. I would be hard pressed to lay out the kind of money that an ALPS Print costs. From the site listed above at $1532.95 NZ dollars is very expensive for a printer that you can only run 5-10 pages per day in hopes the print head doesn't fail. Just my $0.02 worth.
