Outrageous shipping charges!!
whale392 replied to Evil Appetite's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I agree with your thoughts Mark, but the point still remains that unless we use emodelcars, we are stuck with ebay and the fees they charge. The magazine comment was an effort to NOT get this thread locked, as it always seems to happen when THAT subject comes up! -
Outrageous shipping charges!!
whale392 replied to Evil Appetite's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, as to the Emodelcars website; I checked it today FIRST when looking for a kit. Then I went to JiminOhio, then to Ebay. Nobody had it, I ended up finding it on a slot car mania webstore. But to my point of Emodelcars.......Casey, you bitch to let it die as it has no selection and then bitch about Ebay pricing/shipping (not to single you out, as that attitude seems prevalent here). If we all used Emodelcars, then selection and sales/buying traffic would be up and it would be better. The only way to counter low traffic is to BE traffic. When I get all of my kits inventoried and ready for sale/trade, I will go to emodelcars because of its lack of fees. Will posting 500 listings help out on emodelcars? Might. If we ALL did instead of checking the 'Evilbay', it might just catch on. See my point? As to the magazine and concentrating on getting it out on time; let's leave that dead horse laying, as all kicking it does is stir up angry flies. -
Roof height/length differences in 56 Chevies
whale392 replied to whale392's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks for the replies guys. After a LOT of searching, I got the specific measurements I needed. Yup, this will be a lot of work to convert the 56 Nomad to a 4 door wagon, but I am sure it will be worth it to see Jasons' face when it shows up on the dash of his real car! -
Nice build, and I like that you chose a non-mainstream color for it!
-
Looking sweet, Chris! I like the lesser modeled cars as well, and yours is looking spot-on to what I see at the tracks.

Sneak peek .... Lindberg Charger Police Package
whale392 replied to SteveG's topic in Car Kit News & Reviews
Mike, if you aren't going to use the FHP decals from one of your acquired kits, could I possibly get them from you? I have a 1/24th Mustang Coupe I am doing as an FHP SSP car and need decals for it. -
Railroad trucks
whale392 replied to ra7c7er's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
At that size, HO would probably work better for scale appearances. Most modern rolling stock is between 28" and 33", so even the O-scale stuff (1/48th scale) would still be too large for the rail-rider drop wheels on the service trucks. Note: this is just my opinion, and the info provided is subject to verification for validity. -
I actually peeled the top layers of clear off trying to remove BMF on one of my cars. Never did figure out why, as it didn't do it to any of the other ones I used it on.

When we were racing, we went by something very simple when we built the car: Stop it Suspend it Power it Body it We believed that there was no need for extra power until you could STOP and TURN the car, as well as plant the extra power. Seems these guys didn't get that memo......even at 25mph, you still have to stop. And I have seen a DONK in a wreck....care to guess whos' fault it was? (I'll give you a hint, the DONK took MASSIVE front-end damage).

That is my biggest beef, Dave. The complete LACK of forethought into how adding 50lbs of wheels/tires will affect stock brakes. The amount of centrifugal MASS you have going with that large a diameter wheel/tire combo cannot be adequately controlled by stock brakes. They cannot shed the extra heat energy created by trying to stop all that built-up inertia. As to the overall geometry of these things; the exact opposite of extreme lowering happens, along with some of the extreme lowering bad side-effects. You completely throw your steering geometry out of whack; misaligned lower control arms/spindle position, dissimilar ball joint/tie rod end angles, scrub and jacking effect galore.............and all for what? To be the loudest colored Peacock in the henhouse? Hope your tail-chasing and color-blinging is worth the life/lives you might give for it. Cars engineered to go fast reliably, to go low and slow reliably, and to get you safely to and from your destination are one thing; but to purposely overlook basic physics/geometry all in the name of fashion? Foolish.

Roof height/length differences in 56 Chevies
whale392 replied to whale392's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
That would be cool, Paul. Thank you! Bill, thanks for adding that bit of info. As you might know, our Model Club just held their inaugural contest March 27th. One of our class sponsors actually sponsored 4 classes (a good bit of a sponsorship I might add). He is a friend of mine and has a 56 6 Passenger wagon on 20" and 23" wheels, but the rest of the car is primer/rust (not bad on the rust). I would like to build a scale rendition of his car and present it to him as a 'Thank You' for sponsoring the show. He isn't in town at the moment, or I would go take measurements from his car. That would help, but then I would have to find a Nomad and measure it for a direct comparison. -
Roof height/length differences in 56 Chevies
whale392 replied to whale392's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I was able to find a side-profile chart listing the body styles, but no measurements. So, I am still in the same boat on the whole measurement thing. Craig, thanks for the reply. The only reason I am starting with the Nomad is that I have it in my stash (and it is of the same cast line as the recent Revell 56 Chevy Del Ray and 57 Black Widow kits, so I know the quality is top-notch and I can retrofit items from those kits back and forth without too much trouble. I was even contemplating mixing AMT and Revell to get what I want, but I decided against that. Also, while the resin would be a much better starting point, I am somewhat broke. So my stash once again comes to the rescue. -
I am wanting to convert the 1956 Nomad wagon back into a 4 door 6 passenger wagon, but was told the roof height and length was different between the Nomad and the 4 door units. I am starting with the 1/25th scale Revell 56 Nomad kit and a second roof section from a Revell 1956 Del Ray kit. Any hard, fast data on this subject? Are they different heights/lengths?

Well Matt, Eric (Porky) just shipped out the torsion bar suspension and will be looking for his spare CAT3408 for my K123 build. The chassis is pretty much completed and the parts separated into what parts get what color piles. Cab is together and getting tape-templates made for the striping. Trailer floor is base-coated and awaiting washes to bring the wood detailing to life, and the reefer unit I found is getting an attempt at resurrection from its former glue-bombed build up (in fairness, I was 9 when I tried to build it the first time). I have to get Photobucket 'Bulk Uploader' and my computer to play nice, as I have some build pics to post (and some pictoral updates for the FOX CBP thread, as well as for the SVO/TurboCoupe comparison thread I have planned) of this truck.

HooRah Squid! If it makes you feel any better, I just spent $270.00 getting everything together to build a 1/48th scale model of an E-2C Hawkeye I worked on. Never thought I would miss the platform, but time and hindsight make me miss both (airplane and the Navy) more each year. -
Are we, sometimes, unfriendly?
whale392 replied to DRG's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Hey Donald, thanks for the nod to our show (Buckeye Scale Auto Classic). We tried our best to do what we could for everyone involved. The real reason we put it on was for the modelers and the support systems for them (vendors!). We wanted everyone who came to feel the same way we do about the hobby; we love it and all that goes with it. To be honest, I (and a few others) were worried that it wouldn't go too well (or at all). Luckily, we were wrong in that thought. What made it work? Everyone there was talking to each other, intermixing and talking model shop. Vendors, contestants, hosts, and their significant others all on the same page talking about a shared passion. If it weren't for all of you, the show would have been for nothing. We as a club thank you deeply, and I can say it was very nice to meet and talk to some of you in person. The jovial spirit was definately there! There will be foul tempers and attitudes everywhere one goes, and no one is safe from them. All anyone can do is look past it and move on. We may have disagreements once in a while, but we all do share a passion for this hobby (sometimes it is the root of the disagreements!). As long as we remember that, we will all be OK. -

Looking very Nice, Jared. A Dark Burgundy Metallic or Red Metallic would set it off nicely. -
Looks right, Scott. Reminds me of the 80's Pro-Stockers!

Ever Model Your First Car?
whale392 replied to Danno's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yup; still have the real car but the model was destroyed in a DiTY move. 1965 Dodge Coronet500 Convertible. -
I would like to say, for myself and the club; THANK YOU to all of our contestants, vendors, sponsors, significant others, and the hotel staff for making this one heck of a first show! If it weren't for you contestants and the high quality models you brought, you vendors whom provided so much goodies to peruse/buy/drool at, and our significant others who lent many hands and support; this would not have happened at all. You deserve a heartfelt 'Thank You and Congratulations', from all of us at Buckeye Scale Auto Club. It was nice to finally meet some of you all in person, and to talk models and real life with you. I won't forget the show!

Off to work. Straight shot from work to the show! See you all in the morning! (Hope I remembered everything)
