Steve H., First I took some sheet aluminum and cut away everything that didn't look like a dashboard.... but seriously, I used a 1/16" flat tipped diamond grit bit in my rotary tool and tried to lightly touch it to the surface in a even pattern to simulate engine turning. It was tricky maintaining control, but it isn't too bad for my first attempt.

How old are you??
Paul Payne replied to KT EASTMAN's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm 53, been modelling since I was 6. I will model until I die, hope it's 40 more years or so...(Mother is 89). I need at least that long for what I have now, God help me if I buy more, mainly aftermarket stuff, tools, supplies, and reference books now. -
New to the Board--Brass Framed Big Deuce W.I.P.
Paul Payne replied to Ralph Henderson's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Fabulous work!!!! Almost a shame to paint it! -
I like primered hot rods, but wonder about applying decals to flat paint. I would think the decal film would be very visible applied directly to a flat surface. Should a small area be sprayed with clear gloss, apply the decal, then spray again with dullcoat? Any tips would be appreciated!

Engine turned dashboards or other parts
Paul Payne replied to Paul Payne's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Thanks for the info, guys! I have some aluminum sheet, and will try using a dremel tool with an appropriate tip. I will post a pic when I have something done. -
Has anyone discovered a technique for simulating this surface treatment? I was thinking of both aluminum sheet stock as well as plastic (maybe with bare-metal foil?) I would like to scratchbuild a hot rod dashboard with this treatment. Thanks!

2 speed rear axle with quick change rear?
Paul Payne replied to Paul Payne's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Jairus, Thanks much for the reference pix! Also, I agree, if it's in a model, anything goes! Maybe the 1:1 guys should have redesigned the pinion location to accept a quick change unit- or vice-versa! -
Does anyone know if a Columbia or similar two speed rear axle unit could be used with a quick change rear end? Has anyone seen this done 1:1?

Post your stalled projects
Paul Payne replied to Mark C.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well, here it is- a project stalled for nearly 20 years! A Renwal 1966 Duesenberg revival with everything opening, a real (Monogram) Duesenberg engine, flip up rear cowl, windshields from the IMC 46 Ford, and way too many parts gathered together to ever make a decision about! I won't post a pic, but enjoy what you find at the end of the link! http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/Paul...e/duesy-project -
I want to chop the top of my '32 3 window coupe. I know I saw a how-to awhile back, but can't find it. Because the "a " pillars have a slight slant, it looks like the roof would have to be cut apart and material added. Any help, suggestions, or pix would really be appreciated! :?

Post your stalled projects

let's all go to the NNL East or a similar event and overflow the primer projects table....... if life gets in the way of building and completing models, re-arrange your life! -
I had some fun with the Cobra- I used SOHC heads on the 427 side oiler, just for something a bit different! I had to rebuild the footwells to clear, then decided to install poseable front wheels. The tires are the MPC "hollow baloney" tires from the late sixties/early seventies.

1935 Gilmore Special Restoration
Paul Payne replied to S10man's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
These kits are just getting more pricey- glad to see such a nice restoration of a junker- you could never tell from the after pix -
nicest lakster I have seen in years- excellent workmanship- and definitely, go with the t tracknose body! I used that Offy in my first 32 Ford project, also with a track nose, but with 2 side draft carbs and an exhaust header from a truck- no restrictions allowed! (or is that a LOUD!) http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/Paul...els07_16011.jpg

What kills a project for you?
Paul Payne replied to Steve H.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've been working on a 1929 a-v8 for about 3-1/2 years, through 2 moves and no other projects- I just decided to git'er done, no matter what..... but I attempted more scratch building and parts altering than any other project, so that has kept it going- I just have to finish the fold down windshield...... my projects bog down when I encounter a problem I don't know how to fix, or when I can"t dream up a fabrication method to get a shape I need. So, I have few on the shelf like anyone else. How about, at the big car shows, we have a stalled projects table and ask everyone for an idea on how to proceed..... http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/Paul...nnls2006004.jpg http://s60.photobucket.com/albums/h18/Paul...ne/my29av83.jpg -
