1/12 MFH Essex Wire 427 Cobra
Eric C replied to 65slotcar's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
This is looking great. Love the Essex Wire version of the Cobra and it'll look stunning when finished. -
Fantastic work. I really like the finished look of this car and you've described the kit perfectly for what it is to start with and what it can be built into. You've done a great job building this kit and it represents the GT40 very well.

Hi cartpix, some of the parts are molded in a translucent tan like color, those parts aren't painted at all. I may have applied a thin wash of Tamiya smoke over them though to dirty them up and add a little realism. However, the driver seat is molded in black. The seat was textured in the same way as all the other parts but had to be painted. After texturing, I painted the seat back with Tamiya White Primer, next I used a wash of Tamiya Desert Yellow over the white primer, last I used a wash of Tamiya Smoke over the desert yellow for a little depth and to add some gloss to the fiberglass look. Hi brandolsx, Thanks for the great compliments (thanks to everyone else too). I am still building and have built quite a few kits since this one. Many weren't posted on the forum though. You can see them, if you care to, by clicking on the photobucket link in my signature. For those asking about the tutorial. It's actually posted on another forum and due to forum etiquette I hesitate to post a link here. You can search some of the other forms though and probably find it fairly easily. If not, PM me and I'll direct you to it.

Wow.... thanks Guys. This was a long time ago. Anyway, the fiberglass look was achieved by place a small weave clothe, sort of like a wedding veil material on the plastic part then basically brush painting liquid cement over the material, letting it soak through the material, softening the plastic and then pressing the material into the plastic. once the plastic hardens again as the cement dries you'll end up with this texture. It can also be done with those small clothes used to clean eye glasses for a more random texture. There is a tutorial on the internet somewhere that I made years ago with photos and descriptions at each step. I'll see if I can locate it and post it here.

Fantastic! The various level of "chromieness", (yeah, I know it's not a real word) is awesome. Perfect look between aluminum and chrome. -

Very nice. One of my favorite models. You've done a great job with it.

Wow. Very nice work. If you hadn't told anyone it was built 25 years ago no one would ever know.

Thanks for the comment guys... I'll try to answer some of the questions. The blue stripe was hand painted using a long thin liner-brush and paint thinned almost to the consistency of a wash. There's a slight edge molded on the tire and I just flowed paint on the top surface of the ledge. The paint is Plastikote VW Blue decanted and sprayed through an airbrush. I scribed the panel lines a little deeper before I painted the car. I thinned black acrylic paint into a wash and flowed that into the panel lines. A little final polishing will clean up the overflow if there is any. Actually, I started the Trump 1/12 scale kit this weekend. Got the KA Models upgrade set and replacement tires on order.

Just finished this one up last night. Commonly built kit so not much to say about it that hasn't been said before. I didn't do anything special to it other than added safety wire to the wheel knock-offs, repainted the kit fender swoosh decals to be more accurate in color and hand painted the blue stripe around the tires. Otherwise built out of the box. Thanks for looking...

Here's abother one I just finished up a week ago. It's Tamiya's 1/20th scale Tyrrell P34. Enjoyable kit to build although as an older kit it had it's challenges. Painted with Tamiya TS-15 Blue and TS-26 Pure White and cleared with TS-13 then polished with various grades of Tamiya polish. I added a few extra lines to the engine (fuel lines and coil wire) and also added a few PE fasteners and front splitter support. One of the biggest challenges was hand painting the tire lettering on those small front wheels. Thanks for looking....
